Why our sleep experts loved it
Parents, have you been looking for the perfect mattress for your little one? I actually got my hands on the Silentnight Believe Memory Foam Kids Mattress in Dreams and gave it a proper poke and prod, because kids mattresses can be a bit of a minefield. This one is designed with your child's comfort in mind, and is packed with features to provide a restful night's sleep, but it is not going to suit every child.
When it comes to the support layer, the Believe Memory Foam Kids Mattress is made with a Miracoil® spring system. When I pressed down through the middle, you can feel that continuous spring unit pushing back in one piece, it is supportive, but it does not have that 'individual spring' feel you get from pocket springs. The Miracoil® springs offer full-body support for your child as they sleep while not costing too much. This means that no matter how your child moves during the night, they will always have the support they need for a peaceful sleep. Miracoil springs are used in adult mattresses too, although we do find they work better for children.
The mattress also features dual-layered adaptive fillings that provide long-lasting support. Running my hand across the top and then leaning my weight into it, the EcoMemory Fibres™ have that slow, slightly hugging feel, but it is not as deep or as 'melty' as a thick adult memory foam layer. These fillings are made from EcoMemory Fibres™, something new out of Silentnight with a similar classification to typical memory foam which will envelop your child as they sleep while also providing a good amount of support as you sink into the foam, all for maximum comfort. This makes the Silentnight Memory Foam Kids Mattress an eco-friendly choice that is both comfortable and good for the planet.
That said, memory-style fillings can hold onto a bit more heat than a basic fibre-only kids mattress, so if your child is a hot sleeper you might find they kick the duvet off more with this than with a more breathable open coil and polyester combo. I also noticed there is not loads of edge structure when you sit right on the side, which is not a deal breaker for a child, but it does make it feel a bit less 'solid' around the perimeter.
Onto additional benefits and one of the most important measures you can take as a parent is to ensure that your child is safe while they sleep, this is why it is great that the materials in the Believe Memory Foam Kids Mattress is hypoallergenic.
When it comes to the tension found in the base layer, the Silentnight Believe Mattress has a firm comfort grade, making it suitable for children aged 3 years and above who will spend much of their early years sleeping on their back. Lying on it myself, it definitely sits on the firmer side, you do not sink loads, and my lower back felt nicely held up. The flip side is that if your child is a dedicated side sleeper, or they are quite light, that firmness can feel a bit hard around the shoulder and hip, so it is worth keeping an eye on how they naturally settle. The firm tension provides the support they need for healthy growth and development and is a great option for many children.
