Why our sleep experts loved it
I’ve been in the mattress trade for just over a decade, and when a product is billed as “orthopaedic” I always read the spec sheet with a slightly raised eyebrow. The Deluxe Memory Flex Orthopaedic Mattress is one of those classic UK combinations, an open coil spring unit topped with a layer of memory foam, finished with hand tufting and a stretch knit cover. I should be clear on context though. I have not tested this mattress in person. Archers is in Scotland, and I did not have the chance to visit in store, so this review is based on construction details and the small amount of real customer feedback available, not a home sleep trial.
Design and features
The build is straightforward, and that can be a good thing if you want predictable, old school firmness. You get a robust open coil spring system, a memory foam comfort layer, and a hand tufted finish designed to keep the fillings locked down so they do not drift and bunch over time. I do like tufting on paper, it is one of the few “traditional” finishing methods that genuinely can help a mattress feel more stable month after month, especially in firmer models.
The stretch knit cover is another sensible choice, because it lets the foam do its job without being strangled by a stiff fabric. There is also a rod edge wire around the perimeter, which should improve edge support so you can sit or sleep nearer the sides without that rolling sensation. That said, rod edge can help the border, but it does not magically upgrade an open coil core into something it is not.
Mattress comfort
This is pitched as a firm support mattress, and the spec backs that up. The memory foam layer will soften with heat and pressure and contour to your shape, but on an orthopaedic open coil base the overall feel is still likely to be quite “on top” rather than deeply cradling. That can feel reassuring if you want a flatter, more level sleep surface.
My issue is the open coil system itself. In my experience, open coil is simply not as refined as pocket springs for pressure distribution, and it can feel less composed for heavier back sleepers who need the support to stay consistent through the night. If you are a slim build you might get away with it, and you may even enjoy the firmer, slightly springier sensation. But if you carry more weight through your hips and midsection, I would be cautious, because that is where basic spring units can start to feel like they are pushing back rather than properly supporting.
Suitability
This is best suited to back sleepers who genuinely like a firm mattress, and some front sleepers who need their hips held up. If you sleep on your side, especially if you have a more hourglass shape, I would not personally recommend it. Side sleepers typically need extra sink at the shoulder and hip, and a firm open coil base with only a modest foam layer often struggles to deliver that without causing pressure points.
It is also a one sided mattress, so you will not be flipping it. You will need to rotate it head to toe to even out wear. That is normal for memory foam, but it does mean you are relying on rotation and tufting to keep everything feeling even longer term.
Customer feedback is limited but telling. One reviewer said it was an excellent product and that their body and back pain improved. I always take comments like that as a positive sign that the firmness and alignment are working for at least some sleepers, particularly those who need a steadier base. But a single glowing review does not remove the underlying compromises of open coil.
The verdict
If you want an affordable, traditional feeling firm mattress with a touch of memory foam and better than average edge support, the Deluxe Memory Flex Orthopaedic is a reasonable pick. But I do not love open coil as a support core, and I am especially sceptical for heavier back sleepers who often do better with pocket springs or a denser, more engineered support system. For slimmer back sleepers chasing that firm, stable feel, this could suit you well. For side sleepers, I would keep looking.
