Following a detailed in-store inspection, here are my thoughts about this popular product geared towards facilitating the ultimate mattress experience in your sleeping sanctuary.
Design and Features
The Richards Combination Mattress features a melange of materials known for their beneficial properties such as creating a supportive and adaptive sleep surface that moulds to your body. Amidst all these features, what stands out is the Platinum 3D™ layer, as revolutionary as it sounds, offers the feel of a million tiny springs combined with durability and recyclability. While memory foam certainly needs no introduction for its pressure-relieving prowess, it was intriguing to find an additional layer of good old open coil springs. As a purist devoted to the advancement of mattress technology, I must admit, this seemed like a wild card choice.
The appeal doesn't stop there, traditional tufts lend a hand to ensure that the fillings stay in their designated places, contributing to the mattress's form and longevity. The beautifully knitted cover made the sleep surface feel not just cosy but also deeply comfortable. It's crucial not to overlook the medium comfort grade which the brand claims provides adaptive support-an interesting prospect for a mattress promising to marry classic and clever features.
Suitability
The medium firmness of the Richards mattress ideally serves back and stomach sleepers. The supportive base effectively accommodates the natural curvature of the spine, essential for individuals who prefer these sleep positions. However, for side sleepers or those with hourglass figures who typically require supplementary cushioning for their hip and shoulder areas, this mattress might pose some discomfort or sleep interruptions. Nevertheless, back sleepers will greatly benefit from the firmness of this mattress. Yet, it is essential to bear in mind that comfort is inherently subjective and can be largely dependent on personal preferences.
Mattress Comfort
Upon thorough examination, the firm edge of the mattress indeed offers admirable support which eases the transition from sitting to lying down, and vice versa. The mattress has a surprisingly inviting charisma that seems to effortlessly cradle your body to sleep, leaving no room for any potential back pain. The medium comfort claim appears to hold true as it strikes the right balance - it's not too yielding that you'd feel like you're sinking and not too solid that you'd feel like you're sleeping on a board.
In terms of its spring system, while the hourglass-shaped open coil springs add a tad bit of bounce and facilitate breathability, they lack the customised support a pocket spring system offers. Pocket springs excel in providing support and pressure relief by contouring to the body's shape while minimising motion transfer for an undisturbed sleep. The open coil springs failed to impress me significantly and came across as a downgrade in this otherwise well-constructed mattress.

However, as an advocate of enhanced sleep technology, I cannot get past the traditional springs' inclusion. While it might appear as a touch of nostalgia for some, for me, it's akin to placing an old square wheel onto a shiny new car. Simply put, I believe a pocket spring system would complement the other high-quality materials better, seamlessly and intelligently responding to your body for a tailor-made sleep experience. But that's the beauty of this industry - we all have our preferences. In sleep, as in life, one shoe doesn't fit all.
