I've been in the mattress industry for a decade now, and here's my latest in-store review: the TEMPUR® Duxford Upholstered Electric Ottoman Bed Frame. A striking fusion of style, functionality, and clever tech, this bed frame has a lot to love. Coupled with an equally impressive price tag, the Duxford demands some serious consideration for those looking to invest in a quality sleeping environment.
Design and Features
The Duxford bed frame is all about modern relaxation, featuring a unique blend of plush aesthetics and ergonomic design. The headboard, tall and imposingly stylish, sports a carefully crafted vertical stitch and border detail, showing off comfort and design prominence. The soft-touch textured upholstery lends a chic appeal, available in a selection of colours to fit any bedroom scheme.
The standout features, however, are its built-in technology components. Each side of the headboard is equipped with both USB-C and USB-A charging points, ensuring your devices are always at full capacity while you rest. But the real wow-factor comes with the electric side-opening ottoman, which opens and closes at the push of a button.
Construction
Beyond the evident sophistication of the Duxford bed frame, lies a strong construction supported by light oak wooden feet. The use of such a strong natural material indicates a level of durability intended to withstand the test of time. Embedded within are auto-lock ottoman safety mechanisms to ensure the elevated bed stays adhered, a handy safeguard for families with curious or adventurous children.
The internal storage lighting is a thoughtful inclusion that becomes activated upon opening the ottoman, saving the old 'fumbling with a torch' routine. This, in addition to the smart use of space inside the frame, makes it an excellent choice for managing clutter in the bedroom.
Suitability
One aspect that should be clear in your mind about the Duxford bed frame is that it comes with a solid mattress base. It means your mattress will feel firmer, so factor that in before you pick one. On the brighter side, the solid base holds the promise of strong support, nurturing a satisfying sleeping experience.
For sleep tech-enthusiasts, the bed is compatible with electric Sleepmotion or Ergomotion bases, bringing sleep adaptability up a notch. However, the extra capabilities do come with an additional cost, which may tip this investment towards the higher end of the budget.
What Customers Thought
Owners write most about the electric lift and the storage underneath, and several say they could not manage a manual ottoman. One owner wrote, "All the heavy work of lifting is a thing of the past." The light inside the storage and the sturdy build get plenty of praise too, with one review reporting "no creaking or movement at all".
The complaints are few and specific. One owner found that the powered struts take up more room than expected and that the bed only opens to a limited height, and wrote that "storage boxes will be essential". Another said the frame "can’t be moved unless fully dismantled by at least 2 people". The charging points are popular, but they drew gripes too: "the phone charging is slow", although that owner's phones still reached full overnight, and the ports glow blue at night. On the solid base, one owner wrote that it "Makes your mattress feel firmer compared to a box style bed".
The Verdict
Unquestionably, the Duxford Upholstered Electric Ottoman Bed Frame from Tempur® pushes the envelope on what modern luxury sleepspaces can look like. Factoring in the features, the chic design, and its superior construction, it's a high-performer that captures attention, albeit with a sizeable investment.
However, my glowing approval of the Duxford is purely based on in-store experiences and does not substitute for a home test. And it would be remiss not to address the potential downside of the firm mattress environment created by the solid base, which might not appeal to everyone.
The biggest hurdle is the price. As part of the expensive range from Dreams, it's quite an investment piece. If budget isn't a primary concern for you, then this elegant, feature-packed bed frame might be your dream come true. But if you're on the side of practical thrifty-ness, you might have a hard time justifying the cost.
The Duxford bed frame is an impressive specimen of modern luxury combined with practical features. It stands tall, literally and figuratively, in the market of bed frames, and will undoubtedly be a fine addition for those who can afford and appreciate its grandeur.
