James Klein is a mattress reviewer at WantMattress. Where the team can get to a product in person, at Dreams, Bensons for Beds and Furniture Village, or from Origin, Nectar, Emma and DreamCloud, he lies on it and sits on the edge, and he looks at how the cover and stitching are finished.
The rest of his reviews are built from the specification, the retailer's listing and what owners say in their own reviews. The spec sheet gives him the layer depths and the foam densities. Owner reviews give him what a spec sheet leaves out, such as how firm a mattress felt after a month or whether the edge softened. Our How We Test page sets out how both kinds of review are put together.
He also wrote the Mattress Replacement Calculator, eight questions about the mattress you have now that tell you whether it's due for replacing, and articles such as what mattress Premier Inn uses and what REM sleep is.
