Why our sleep experts loved it
I have been laying on the Sleepeezee Cooler Extreme Ortho for the past few hours, a firm, orthopaedic, pocket sprung mattress with a cooling gel comfort layer. Verdict time. It’s good, but in a niche way. It is very supportive for back sleepers who prefer a flat, more disciplined surface, but side sleepers will find it hard to get the shoulder and hip sink they crave. The deep gel layer is a real highlight, the springs themselves are well made with a high count for this price point but overall, I do think you are paying a bit for the badge.
Construction & Materials
This is a hybrid mattress which pairs a pocket sprung core with more modern comfort layers. In the UK king there are 950 pocket springs working independently to spread bodyweight and minimise pressure points. On top of the springs are Sleepeezee’s StayCool gel and a stabilising Superbond foam layer, before a cool to touch Cooler Extreme fabric cover finishes the top of the mattress. The overall depth is 25 cm, with a taped border, built in handles and reinforced edges so you can use more of the surface without the feeling of rolling off the side. It is hypoallergenic, handcrafted in the UK and the build is backed by a long structural guarantee from the brand.
Firmness & Feel
The quoted feel is extra firm and that is in line with my experience. Night one was very flat with very little give under the shoulders and hips. After a few nights it did loosen up a little but remained very properly firm. On my back, the alignment was excellent. Lower back felt properly supported and I woke with less tightness than is often the case. On my side, the mattress just did not quite give me enough pressure relief at the shoulder. If you like to sleep on a mattress rather than in it, this will suit you. If you like a plush cradle, this won’t.
Performance & Support
The support is the star of this mattress. The pocketed springs really keep the spine in a neutral position and they resist hammocking well through the lumbar zone. Edge support is firm so sitting on the side to tie shoes or sleeping close to the edge is perfectly fine. Motion transfer is for a traditional pocket sprung mattress so partner disturbance is mild. The overall feel is purposeful and robust, the kind of tension that back sleepers and those with heavier builds tend to like.
Temperature Regulation
The deep StayCool gel is there for a purpose. I found there were fewer hot patches on this mattress where shoulders and hips normally generate some heat build up, and the cover is cooler to the touch than a standard knit. It does not have an artificially cold feel, more a consistently neutral feeling throughout the night. Airflow through the spring core helps with that too which is helpful if you are a naturally warm sleeper.
Practical Features
At 25 cm deep it will work with most fitted sheets and it can sit happily on slatted or solid bases, provided the slats are sensibly spaced. There are proper side handles to help with rotation. This model does need to be turned as well as rotated, so be prepared for two person lifts. Finish quality is tidy, with straight stitching and a robust border. Care is the usual sensible, air it before first use and do regular rotations.
Who It Suits
Back sleepers: who want unwavering, orthopaedic style support and a flatter, more disciplined feel.
Hotter sleepers: who still prefer a more traditional sprung mattress. The cooling cover and gel layer do a solid job of keeping temperatures even through the night.
Brand minded buyers: who value Sleepeezee’s reputation and long structural guarantee as part of the purchase decision.
Who It Doesn't Suit
Side sleepers: especially if you are a lighter to average body weight. There is not enough give at the shoulder to properly relieve pressure comfortably.
Anyone who wants plush comfort: this is firm, flat and supportive rather than cushioned.
Value purists: with a 950 spring count in a king and a fairly simple comfort stack I do think it is a touch pricey for the specification, even though the real world performance is very strong.
Final Verdict
The Sleepeezee Cooler Extreme Ortho is a lovely choice if you know you sleep best on something very firm and you prefer a cooler surface. The deep gel is a genuine benefit, the pocket springs are good quality with a high count for the range and the edge support inspires confidence. Side sleepers would be better off with a medium model. Price wise, you do pay a little for the badge but if quality control and reputation are high on your list, this does deliver dependable support and reliably cooler nights.
