Split Tension Zip & Link Dual Core Mattresses

Split tension gives you one mattress; zip-and-link gives you two that separate

Choose split tension if you want different feels under one cover, or zip-and-link if you also want to separate the bed into two singles. "Dual core" is the catch-all name. Three names for closely related arrangements: the trade does enjoy making a straightforward shopping trip feel like revision.

A split tension mattress has two pocket-spring units of different tension side by side, inside a single cover. On most, there's no stitched line down the middle. You feel a change in resistance where the units meet, and most people stop noticing it. You get a shared sleeping surface with a different amount of give on each side.

A zip-and-link consists of two single-width mattresses zipped together along their inside edges. You'll usually pair them with a zip-and-link divan, so you can separate the mattresses and bases when guests need two beds. The zip is more noticeable than the meeting point inside a split tension mattress. If you spend much of the night in the middle, that difference deserves a proper try before you buy.

These are mainly king and super king arrangements because dividing a smaller bed leaves each of you with a narrow half. My view is that a king gives two adults the space they probably imagined when they bought a double. Romance is lovely; having somewhere to put your elbow is useful too. Size up if the room allows, but measure the space around the bed as well as the space beneath it.

These are the usual UK dimensions. The half-widths explain why a super king is the more useful zip-and-link for guest-room flexibility.

Double and small-double zip-and-links also exist, mostly in the contract trade, but their halves are narrow. Emperor sizes are available at the larger end. Check the actual dimensions before ordering bedding, particularly if you plan to use fitted sheets on each half separately.

Different bodies and sleeping positions justify different tensions

Split tension makes most sense when you would choose different mattresses if you were shopping separately. A substantial weight difference is my first reason to consider it, followed by different sleeping positions. You don't have to reach a diplomatic agreement on "medium" before you're allowed through the checkout.

A heavier person compresses the mattress more, so I start them on a firmer tension. A lighter person generally needs more give, especially when sleeping on their side. Side sleeping also calls for room for the shoulder and hip to sink a little. If your partner sleeps on their back or front, the feel that suits them can leave you lying too firmly against the surface.

Firmness really can change measured sleep. In Hu and colleagues' 2025 study, twelve adults of moderate body mass index slept on soft, medium and firm mattresses while their sleep was recorded using polysomnography. The medium mattress gave the most consistent sleep duration, efficiency and time to fall asleep, with more sleep-spindle activity.¹ Firmness had a significant effect on time to fall asleep. This was twelve people of similar build in one laboratory. It supports an initial firmness choice for many people, not a universal prescription or proof that medium is best. To my mind, measurable differences among similar people are a good reason to take your different needs seriously.

Separate tensions are also useful if one of you has back pain and finds firmer support more comfortable, while the other wants a softer surface. A mattress does not treat back pain, and pain alone doesn't mean you need a harder bed. The appeal is that you can keep the feel that suits you without requiring your partner to tolerate it. The showroom's hardest mattress isn't a relationship test you have to pass together.

Sharing itself is a mixed business. Andre and colleagues' 2021 scoping review, covering bed sharing across couples and other pairs, found that people reported better sleep when sharing while objective measures were generally worse. The authors raised movement and heat as possible disturbances.² This was a review of bed sharing, not a mattress study. I think that makes a practical case for tackling the disturbance you can change, while keeping the company you enjoy.

In their 2016 systematic overview, Richter and colleagues described greater intimacy through bed sharing alongside consequences for sleep quality and health that were not consistently positive. They recommended that couples discuss how they sleep together.³ The overview did not establish benefits for a particular mattress arrangement. Have that conversation before shopping: whether you're disturbed by turning, feel cramped, or simply want different firmness will affect what you buy.

If you're a similar build, sleep in similar positions and both prefer the same tension, save the extra spend. A shared mattress in the right tension already does the job. You don't need two spring units just to confirm that you're two separate people.

Choose each side by weight, then adjust for sleeping position

Choose your tension separately, starting with your weight and then adjusting for how you actually sleep. Use our firmness scale to compare the gap between your preferences. "Medium" varies between makers, which is unhelpful when you're trying to make a sensible comparison.

These are my shopping rules of thumb, not clinical thresholds. Where weight and position point in different directions, start with weight and check that the comfort layer lets you settle without excessive sinking.

Then compare how far apart you are on our firmness scale. My practical rule is:

• One step apart: one mattress chosen for the heavier person, with a topper on the lighter person's side, usually does the job.
• Two steps apart: this is where paying for split tension or zip-and-link makes sense. Each of you gets a meaningfully different feel.
• Three or more steps apart: the change at the join becomes obvious. Most pairs sit two steps apart; try a larger difference together before committing to it.

Use a showroom visit to rule out the wrong feel. Stay in your normal sleeping position for a full ten minutes, then turn over and try the middle together. Sitting politely on the edge in your coat tells you very little, however convincing you look as a Serious Mattress Buyer. Your weight and position should guide the shortlist; the lie-down helps you reject what feels wrong.

Choose pocket springs on both sides. The springs work independently, so movement is better contained on the side where it starts. Check the outer edges too, especially if you both sleep near them. A wide mattress is less useful if you avoid the last stretch because you feel as though you'll slide off.

The join and the centre support need checking before you buy

The main practical checks are whether you can live with the join and whether your base supports the middle properly. Separate tensions are worth the extra fuss when you need them, but a bigger bed still has to work in your bedroom. Sadly, the lovely photograph won't tell you what happens when you lie across the zip.

On split tension, the join is mainly a change in feel. On zip-and-link, there's a physical zip between two mattress edges, so you'll notice it more. Try lying where you usually end up during the night, including across the middle if that's your habit. Nobody needs to demonstrate perfect lane discipline just to justify a mattress purchase.

A topper across the whole pair hides most of the zip and makes the surface feel more continuous. A tightly fitted mattress protector also helps cover it. The topper will change the surface feel on both sides, so check that it doesn't undo the difference you wanted. My preference is to get the join comfortable with as little extra bedding as you need.

A zip-and-link divan is the usual base: two bases clipped together, with support beneath the meeting point. A slatted frame must support the centre without bowing. Check the centre support before ordering, because separate mattresses still need a sound surface beneath them.

The two independent spring units avoid the shared central trench you get when both sleepers pull a connected surface down between them. That doesn't make the bed immune to wear or excuse a bowed base. If you find a dip, inspect the support underneath as well as the mattresses before buying anything to cover it.

With zip-and-link, you can unzip the mattresses and rotate each half separately, turning each end to end. Keep track of which tension belongs on which side before reconnecting them. A split tension mattress has one cover, so follow its care instructions for rotating the whole mattress; a head-to-foot turn changes which tension sits on each side of the room. Flip either construction only if it's designed to be double-sided.

You're paying for two mattresses' worth of springs and the work involved in joining the arrangement. I think that's money well spent when your needs differ substantially, but a poor upgrade when you both want the same feel. Read the return and exchange terms for the whole arrangement, including what happens if only one tension is wrong, before you order.

Avoid a compromise tension and a base that bows

I'd rule out these combinations before getting attached to a mattress. Agreeing to be equally uncomfortable is an impressively fair arrangement, but you can do better with the same bedroom.

• A compromise medium when you're two steps apart: each of you gives up the feel you actually wanted. Choose the sides separately.
• Two tensions three or more steps apart without trying the join: the change feels much more like a step across the bed.
• A zip-and-link on a slatted frame that bows in the middle: fix or replace the base before putting new mattresses on it.
• A side chosen only because you liked it briefly in the shop: use your weight and sleeping position to narrow the choice before the showroom visit.
• Split tension bought to fix a snoring partner: address the snoring first. Separate spring tensions don't solve it.

There's enough jargon involved without adding an avoidable return to your weekend. Check the joined dimensions against your base, and check each half's dimensions against any bedding you intend to keep.

If your partner snores loudly with gasps, ask them to see their GP.
