Natural fillings matter more than a natural-looking label
Read the full filling list before you pay extra for a natural mattress, because the cover tells you very little about what's underneath. A leafy logo is a remarkably cheap thing to print. You're looking for the materials through the mattress, including its comfort layers and core, rather than a single natural ingredient on the outside.
UK mattresses use wool and cotton alongside horsehair, coir, hemp, silk and cashmere. Coir is coconut fibre. Natural latex comes from rubber-tree sap. Those materials can sit over pocket springs or a latex core, and a mattress can contain both natural and synthetic layers. You need to know which layers you're actually buying.
I wouldn't dismiss a mixed construction just for containing something synthetic. I would object to paying for natural fillings and discovering that nearly all the cushioning is foam. Ask what's inside each layer and how much detail the maker will give you. "Contains wool" leaves rather a lot of room for the rest of the mattress.
The certificate is the claim I'd check. It needs to cover the material being advertised, not merely another item the company makes. Even a genuine certificate for the cotton cover doesn't turn the foam underneath into an organic filling. Match the certificate's scope to the part of the mattress you care about.
- GOTS, the Global Organic Textile Standard: look for this when checking organic cotton or wool claims.
- GOLS, the Global Organic Latex Standard: this is the relevant standard for organic latex.
- The Soil Association's mark: the Soil Association certifies organic textiles in the UK. Check which textiles the certification covers.
- OEKO-TEX Standard 100: this means a textile has been tested for harmful substances. It does not mean that the textile is natural or organic.
That last distinction matters. I like a useful certificate; I don't like a useful certificate being recruited for a completely different job. Ask for a certificate you can look up, then check its scope against the filling list before you buy.
Wool and cotton sleep cooler, with a firmer feel than foam
Choose wool and cotton fillings if you want a bed that feels cooler and drier rather than deeply enveloping. They absorb and release moisture and let air move through the layers. For a hot sleeper, I'd start with these fillings over pocket springs before being wooed by another foam cover with "Arctic" somewhere in its imaginary job title.
The feel is different from memory foam. Natural-fibre mattresses generally feel firmer and drier, with less of that slow sinking around your body. That's a benefit if you dislike feeling held in place, but it can disappoint you if your idea of comfort is a deep, soft cradle. Natural does not automatically mean soft, however fluffy the sheep in the advert looks.
Horsehair and coir add firm, springy layers in more expensive builds. Their job is different from the softer surface feel you might associate with wool or cotton. Read the whole construction rather than choosing by the fanciest fibre in the name: a little cashmere doesn't tell you how far your shoulder will sink.
Wool also resists ignition naturally. Some makers use a wool layer to meet fire regulations without chemical treatments. If that matters to you, ask how the particular mattress meets those requirements; the presence of wool alone doesn't tell you whether other treatments have been used.
Natural fillings settle where you sleep. Shallow impressions during the first months are the fillings bedding in rather than a fault. A deep dip that doesn't even out with turning is a fault, so don't let a genuine hollow be waved away as part of the charm.
Follow the maker's turning schedule to spread wear across the fillings. Rotate the mattress end to end, and flip it only if it's double-sided. This is the unglamorous part of buying lovely fibres, I'm afraid: you do have to move the bloody thing. Check the care instructions before ordering, particularly if lifting a mattress will be difficult for you.
Natural latex gives you bounce and lasting comfort
Natural latex is the comfort material I'd put in front of you if you want springiness without slow-sinking foam. To my mind, it's the best, longest-lasting comfort layer most people never get round to trying. Then they see the price and suddenly become very interested in something else. I understand the hesitation, but the feel deserves a proper try.
Natural latex starts as rubber-tree sap, which is foamed into a block. The two processes you'll see are Dunlop and Talalay. Dunlop produces a denser, firmer latex; Talalay produces a lighter, more even latex. Those names describe how it's made, so don't mistake either one for proof that the latex is natural.
You feel the bounce as soon as you shift your weight. Latex pushes back and recovers rather than leaving you waiting for a deep impression to fill out. For someone who turns frequently, I'd choose that responsiveness over deeply enveloping memory foam. It feels more trampoline than slow sink, though you still need to choose a tension that suits you.
I rate natural latex for sleeping cool and lasting for years. The cost is its awkward bit, and I wouldn't stretch your budget just to own a particular material. If heat is your main concern and you don't especially want bounce, pocket springs with wool and cotton fillings are the other route I'd investigate.
"Latex" alone does not mean natural latex. It can describe a blend containing synthetic latex. "100% natural latex" is a more specific claim, while GOLS concerns organic latex. Ask what the latex contains and check the certification against that claim. A rubber-tree picture is not paperwork, even if someone has made it very tasteful.
Latex allergy exists. If you have a latex allergy, avoid latex mattresses rather than relying on a cover to make the choice suitable. I recommend latex for its feel, never on health grounds.
Keep allergy care separate, then buy for your body
Choose your mattress for comfort, and tackle allergy concerns separately: a mattress does not treat or prevent an allergy. House dust mites live in mattresses regardless of their fillings. Paying extra for wool doesn't buy you an exemption, however enthusiastically someone has written "hypoallergenic" on the label.
If you are allergic to house dust mite, your sleep can suffer too. In Leger and colleagues' 2017 survey, about half of the adults reported poor-quality sleep; snoring and night waking were common, and worse rhinitis was associated with more sleep complaints. This was a cross-sectional, self-reported survey in France of adults and children already diagnosed with house-dust-mite allergy and starting immunotherapy.1 It shows an association, not that changing a mattress improves sleep.
Choose a washable cover, hot-wash bedding according to its care label, and air the bed. An allergen-proof encasing is another measure to consider as part of a broader approach. Wilson and Platts-Mills' 2018 review found that long-term avoidance measures can reduce sensitisation and respiratory disease severity when used as a multi-pronged approach.2 This was a review of home interventions, not a mattress trial; an encasing is one part of that approach, not a cure.
A recognised scheme such as Allergy UK's Seal of Approval is worth identifying when a product carries it. "Hypoallergenic" or "anti-allergy" on its own is not a standard. I want the named scheme and what it covers before I give that wording any weight.
If allergy symptoms persist, including wheeze, a blocked nose every morning or disturbed sleep, speak to your GP.
For the mattress itself, start with the filling list and its certificates, then choose the tension around your weight and sleeping position. I start most people around medium-firm, but lighter side sleepers need more give and heavier sleepers need more resistance. Your sleeping position is the one you actually use, incidentally, not the elegant one you demonstrate for thirty seconds in the showroom.
These are my shopping rules of thumb, not clinical thresholds or a shared firmness scale. Brands use firmness words differently, so compare how far you sink rather than assuming one maker's medium feels like another's.
| Your weight or sleeping position | Where I'd start you | What to check when you lie down |
|---|
| Under about 9 stone, especially on your side | A softer tension with a yielding comfort layer | Your shoulder and hip should sink a little rather than stay perched on top. |
| About 9 to 18 stone | Medium-firm as a starting point, softer for side sleeping | You should feel supported without excessive sinking or pressure at the surface. |
| Over about 18 stone | A firmer, thicker build with a stronger spring gauge | Your hips shouldn't sink so far that you feel folded into the bed. |
| Back or front sleeping | More resistance than I'd choose for side sleeping at the same weight | Check that your middle doesn't sink much farther than the rest of you. |
Check the springs underneath with as much interest as the fibres on top. I'd take pocket springs over open coil: the individually pocketed springs respond more separately, while a connected open-coil unit passes movement across the bed. Expensive fillings aren't a reason to ignore the support underneath them.
Avoid paying for the label instead of the mattress
I'd rule out these purchases before getting attached to the fabric swatch. The nice beige showroom lighting is very persuasive, so do the dull checks while you're still capable of leaving empty-handed.
- A cotton cover over synthetic foam sold on its natural image. Read the complete filling list if you're paying for natural comfort layers.
- "Organic" without a certificate you can look up. Ask for the certificate and check which material it covers.
- A natural mattress bought to fix an allergy. Choose a washable cover for practical care rather than treating a filling as a remedy.
- A natural-fibre mattress whose turning schedule you won't follow. The fillings settle where you lie, so check the care requirements before buying.
- Latex when you have a latex allergy. A reassuring phrase about the cover doesn't change the filling.
Don't buy on the strength of one silk or cashmere mention either; I'd want more than a posh ingredient doing a guest appearance. Ask the seller to identify the main comfort layers and the core in writing before you order.
