Why our sleep experts loved it
I've been looking forward to getting my hands on the Millbrook Wool Luxury 1400 Pocket Mattress because Millbrook tend to do that proper, traditional feel really well. When I tried this one in person, the first thing I noticed was how 'together' it feels, it doesn't have that slouchy, sink-in vibe you get with a lot of softer hybrids.
The Millbrook Luxury 1400 Pocket Mattress has been specifically designed to provide orthopaedic support and comfort. A unique blend of pocket springs, wool, cotton and natural latex provides the perfect comfort level. Lying on my back, it kept my hips nicely level and I could feel the pocket springs responding in smaller sections rather than the whole mattress moving at once. On my side though, the firmness can feel a bit unforgiving around the shoulder if you're lighter in build, it's more of a 'sleep on' than 'sleep in' feel.
This luxurious pocket sprung mattress maintains a firm edge and orthopaedic support throughout. It features reinforced mattress edge for extra durability and is made with pocket springs support rather than the cheaper traditional spring. Sitting on the edge to put my shoes on, it held up better than most pocket sprung mattresses I try, you don't get that immediate roll-off feeling. That said, it still isn't a rock-solid perimeter like you'd get on some hotel-style open coil models, so if you perch on the side a lot, keep expectations sensible.
The design is finished with a luxurious cotton cover and wool comfort layer. The mattress is double sided with air vents for breathability. Running my hand across the cover it felt smooth and properly stitched, and the surface has that slightly springy, natural bounce you tend to get from latex rather than a slow memory foam sink. The wool layer gives it a drier, less clammy feel, but if you run hot, don't assume wool automatically fixes that, in a warm room it can still sleep warmer than a basic fibre top.
The mattress is handmade in the UK and comes with a 10 year warranty.
