Why our sleep experts loved it
Looking for the perfect mattress to give you that cosy feeling during sleep? Then we might have found exactly what you are looking for. When it comes to mattresses, there are so many brands and options available in the market that it can be quite confusing. Before you zero on a particular brand and model, it is important to understand what type of mattress would suit your needs best. The Hypnos Luxurious Earth 02 Mattress is one such option. It is a luxurious classic mattress with different layers for comfort, support and optimised cooling. I got my hands on this one in person and the first thing that hit me was how 'proper' it feels, it has that traditional Hypnos look and weight to it, not a flimsy bed-in-a-box vibe.
A Hypnos Luxurious Earth 02 Mattress is a classical mattress that features generous helpings of wool and quality pocket springs in the base. The upper comfort layer is a combination of two materials: Himalayan plant fibres and dense wool. These are two different types of materials that are combined to make for a cooling and natural mattress. Surrounding these layers, the mattress also has a breathable cover made of organic cotton that aids in ensuring good airflow is promoted throughout the product which helps to keep you cool while you sleep. Running my hand across that organic cotton cover, it felt smooth and breathable rather than plasticky, and when I pressed down with my palm you can feel the wooly 'spring back' straight away. The pocketed coil technology in the base layer is the same used in other high quality mattresses and is one of the best options for those looking for further support from their mattress. Lying on it on my back, I could feel the pocket springs responding in a more individual way than an open coil, my hips stayed nicely level without that hammock feeling. Edge support was decent when I sat on the side to put my shoes on, but it is not a rigid, foam-box edge, you still get a bit of dip, which is pretty normal for a natural-fill pocket sprung mattress. One thing to be aware of, all that wool and dense natural fibre does make it feel quite substantial, so rotating it is a two-person job in my book, and if you're after a really bouncy, light mattress, this is not that. The springs, much like the cover and comfort layers, are also breathable, helping the mattress to stay cool as the air can flow freely from top to bottom, but if you are a hot sleeper who wants that instant cool-to-the-touch feel, natural fibres tend to feel more temperature steady than 'cold'.
From a suitability standpoint, there are 2 firmnesses available of both medium and firm. The medium will suit most people as it is optimised for combination sleepers who sleep on both their back and side while providing adequate support for your back and neck but with enough comfort and sinkage to offer relief. For me, the medium is the safer shout, on my side I got nice pressure relief through the shoulder without feeling like I was sinking miles into it. The firm is a bit more specialist, being more optimised for back sleepers and those with a slightly higher BMI, and I can see lighter side sleepers finding it a bit too unyielding around the shoulder and hip. Whichever option you choose, you are in good hands with a spectacular 10-year guarantee that helps highlight just how much confidence the retailer and manufacturer both have in this product, although at this sort of price point I do still like to see practical touches like proper side handles for rotating, and they are not always a given.
