Why our sleep experts loved it
Today we are looking at the Vela Mattress from Bensons for Beds, a low price point product that might have just what you need for a good night's sleep. I got my hands on this one in-store at Bensons and spent a bit of time pressing into the top, sitting on the edge, and having a quick lie down in my usual back and side positions. See, this mattress is constructed with a combination of high quality open coil springs and quilting materials, creating a nice balance of support and comfort. Running my hand across the cover, it felt smooth and nicely finished for the money, but it does have that more traditional 'quilted mattress' feel rather than anything plush or sink-in. It also features a breathable outer cover and a quilted top layer to provide a feel beyond it's low price point. The mattress has been designed with a universally friendly medium firmness core, offering good levels of support and comfort for back, side and stomach sleepers alike. On my back, it felt nicely level through the hips, but on my side I could tell straight away it's not one for people who want loads of shoulder give. With an impressive 5-year warranty, you can be sure that you are investing in a mattress that will stand the test of time, although I'd still say 5 years is fairly standard rather than anything special.
Starting with the comfort layer, this mattress features a luxury quilted top layer and a breathable border, which helps cut down on overheating and minimises heat retention and build up. When I pressed my palm into the quilting, it had a bit of initial softness, but you get through it quickly and then you can feel the spring unit doing the heavy lifting underneath. This mattress is ideal for those who want a mattress that is long lasting and provides great value for money thanks to its low price point and traditional materials. It's also a good choice for those who want a product that provides reasonable support; this is because the open coil layer has been well established within the industry at providing good support relative to price point.
That said, open coil is the trade-off here. If you sleep with a partner and one of you is a fidget, you will notice more movement than you would on a pocket sprung mattress, and when I dropped my weight onto the side to test the edge it compressed more than I'd like for anyone who sits on the bed to get dressed. I'd also be a bit cautious if you're a lighter side sleeper, say under about 70kg, as the medium tension here can feel a touch firm around the shoulder because there isn't a thick comfort layer to take the edge off.
Who Should Buy the Mattress? The Benson for Beds Vela Medium Tension Open Coil Quilted Mattress is a great choice for back and stomach sleepers who want a simple, supportive feel without spending loads. If you're after that bouncy, traditional mattress vibe and you rotate your mattress regularly, it makes a lot of sense for the money. If you're a dedicated side sleeper, or you want proper motion isolation for two of you, I'd be looking at an entry-level pocket sprung option instead.
