What our sleep experts found
The Alberta Ortho Comfort Mattress gave me a fairly clear answer in store: comfortable enough for ordinary use, much less persuasive as anything I would call orthopaedic. The price point looked reasonable on the shop floor, so I can see why it gets attention. The name, though, sets an expectation the feel did not really meet.
I tried it seated, on my back and on my side. The surface had an easy medium feel, with no immediate sense of harshness. People often assume “ortho” means firm, braced and posture-led. This mattress felt softer in character than that, closer to a general pocket-sprung option for mixed sleepers.
What the build tells you
Inside, the Alberta uses 1000 pocket springs. That puts it in acceptable territory, although only just for the money. I would not call it underbuilt, because the display model supported my weight evenly enough and did not feel flimsy under a quick pressure test. Still, current sale ranges are pushing better specifications into this bracket, so the Alberta has to compete hard.
The finish was tidy on the mattress I handled. No loose stitching jumped out, and the cover sat cleanly across the top panel. It is not a luxurious-looking design, mind you. Once a fitted sheet is on, that may be irrelevant, but there is little here that makes the product feel above its lane.
The five-year guarantee helps. I would expect that level of cover now from a mainstream mattress, so it lands as reassurance rather than a bonus. Useful, yes. Persuasive on its own, no.
Comfort and support in person
The medium tension is believable. Lying on my back, my hips stayed reasonably level and I did not feel pushed up awkwardly through the spine. On my side, the shoulder area gave way enough to avoid that immediate pressure you get from very firm mattresses. For a short showroom test, it was easy to settle on.
The trouble starts with the orthopaedic positioning. I was looking for stronger lower-back resistance, the sort of feel you get from a mattress built around posture support. The Alberta did not give me that. It felt pleasant, then slightly vague through the middle, especially once I relaxed into it for a few minutes.
A Sealy Posturepedic model usually feels clearer in its lumbar support, even before you get into the higher-priced versions. The Alberta is gentler at first contact, and some sleepers will prefer that, but the support message is less convincing.
Who I think it suits
Back sleepers of average build are the safest match. The mattress gives enough surface stability for that position without feeling severe. Side sleepers may also be fine on it, provided they are not expecting deep pressure relief at the hip.
Front sleepers would not be my first choice for this mattress. A firmer centre would give me more confidence for that position, particularly for nightly use. Heavier sleepers should also compare before buying, because the support system felt adequate rather than notably strong.
I tested this in store, so my view is based on immediate feel and build inspection. The longer-term question is whether the comfort layers soften noticeably after a few months, and that cannot be settled by a showroom visit. Partner movement is another area I would want to judge at home, since rolling around alone on a display bed tells only half the story.
Decision after trying it
The Alberta Ortho Comfort Mattress makes sense as a reasonably priced medium mattress with a plain finish and a serviceable spring unit. The orthopaedic label is the weak link. I would ignore that word and judge it purely on comfort.
My buying advice is simple: try it, then check what Silentnight and Sealy have in the same sale window before paying full ticket. For a spare room or a guest bed, I would be more forgiving. For someone buying because they need real postural support, I would keep walking along the row.
