Is it any good?
There is a sound starting point here: pocket springs, natural fillings and a choice between distinctly different feels. I prefer pocket springs to open coil for a main bed, so the basic construction is in line with what I look for.
Our tester tried the Boutique Ortho in a Furniture Village store and found it properly firm and traditional rather than softly cushioned. On their back it felt reassuringly supportive; on their side it was less forgiving around the shoulder and hip. That tells you more than the word “Ortho” in the name.
The Boutique 3000 Pillow Top gave our tester a noticeably different impression in store. Its cotton-and-Hampshire-wool top felt plush and cool to lie on, with cushioning at the shoulder and support beneath the hips on their side.
The range
Boutique is the brand's collection at Furniture Village: the Boutique 2000 and 3000 Pillow Tops, the Boutique 4000 and the firmer Boutique Ortho. Matching divans and headboards sit alongside the mattresses. The two models on this page offer the clearest comparison: a cushioned pillow top against a more traditional firm feel.
The Handmade Bed Company Boutique 3000 Pillow Top Mattress is the plush-topped option. Its listing specifies natural fillings and 3,000 springs in king size. In store, our tester found the top cushioned the shoulder without letting the hips feel unsupported on their side. It is the one to compare if a softer surface appeals, although it is not my recommendation because of the pillow-top construction.
The Handmade Bed Company Boutique Ortho Mattress is the firmer, more traditional alternative, combining pocket springs with natural fillings. I would put it on the shortlist for back sleepers who actively enjoy a firm mattress, rather than shoppers who simply assume firmer must be better.
The wider collection also includes the Boutique 4000, which Furniture Village describes as having 4,000 pocket springs in king size and all-natural fillings. A higher spring count alone would not decide my choice. The feel still needs to suit the person sleeping on it.
Becky's reasoning for her picks
The Boutique Ortho gets my recommendation because its purpose is clear and its shop-floor feel backed that up. It felt firm, supportive and relatively unyielding, which is exactly the combination some back sleepers want. I would choose it for that preference, not because its name suggests it is automatically better for your back.
My reservation is just as important as the recommendation. If you spend most of the night on your side and want your shoulder and hip to settle into the surface, the Ortho may feel too resistant.
I am not making the Boutique 3000 a second pick just to cover another sleeping position. I dislike pillow tops, and a pleasant first impression does not change that preference. Its plush feel is worth understanding if you are comparing the two, but I would look at alternatives without a pillow top before settling on it.
What owners say
A couple of Boutique Ortho owners give positive feedback. One describes the mattress as good quality and good value; the other praises its comfort and value, and appreciates that it is British.
One Boutique 3000 Pillow Top owner reports a very different experience, describing it as uncomfortable and saying they could feel too much of the mattress beneath them. The same owner also describes Furniture Village as unhelpful. It is a useful counterweight to how inviting it felt on the shop floor.
Buying it
The Handmade Bed Company is exclusive to Furniture Village, so that is where to compare the mattresses in store or buy online. I would use the store visit to spend time in your usual sleeping position, rather than choosing between the Ortho and pillow top by name or spring count.
Furniture Village charges for mattress delivery, so add that to the total when you compare. Given the service complaint from one Boutique 3000 owner, get the delivery and aftercare details agreed before you pay.
