I'm Becky Reeve, a staff writer at WantMattress. I've worked in the bed and mattress industry for over a decade, and I've completed the National Bed Federation's Introduction to Beds certificate. On the brand-against-brand comparison pages I write the verdict myself, under the heading "Becky's take".
We put a review together in one of two ways. Where we can get to a mattress, we try it in person, at Dreams, Bensons for Beds and Furniture Village showrooms and on mattresses from Origin, Nectar, Emma and DreamCloud. Where we can't, we build the review from the specification, the retailer's listing and what owners say about living with it. Each review says which of the two it is, and our How We Test page sets out both.
My opinions are my own, and I'm open about them. I prefer pocket springs to open coil. I think latex is the material most people never try. I'm wary of pillow tops, because they soften and can't be flipped. Medium-firm is where I'd start most people. I dislike Emma's marketing, and I think Tempur is overpriced for the name.
My own bed at home is an Origin Hybrid Pro, which is why I flag it whenever Origin comes up in a comparison. I sleep on my side and use a noise machine.
