Why our sleep experts loved it
Mattress protectors are one of those purchases people tend to rush, then regret later when the “bargain” option turns the bed into a noisy, sweaty crinkle-fest. I viewed and tested the Select Mattress Protector in store, and my overall take is fairly blunt: it’s fine, it isn’t revolutionary, and yes, there are plenty of cheaper protectors that technically do the same job. But this one feels noticeably nicer than a lot of budget alternatives, and crucially it avoids the tell-tale scrunching sound you often get with poorer quality waterproof layers. If you want a protector that feels a bit more grown-up and less “plastic sheet”, this is a solid contender.
Design and features
The headline feature here is the combination of 100% waterproofing with Purotex probiotic technology designed to reduce common allergens. In-store, I was immediately looking for the usual trade-offs: does it feel rubbery, does it look like it will trap heat, and does it have that stiff hand-feel that makes sheets sit oddly? On first handling, it comes across as a more premium protector than the cheap supermarket equivalents. The fabric surface feels smoother and less “coated”, which usually signals better comfort in use and better drape under a fitted sheet.
Emma leans heavily into the “natural sleep remedy against allergens” angle. I’ll be honest: I always approach probiotic textiles with a bit of scepticism because the real-world benefit depends on consistent contact, friction, and regular use, and it’s not something most people can easily verify at home. That said, the mechanism is at least clearly explained: the probiotic capsules are activated by friction while you sleep and multiply over time, with full protection stated after roughly two weeks. I like that it’s not positioned as instant magic. Still, I’d treat the probiotic element as a worthwhile bonus rather than the sole reason to buy.
It’s also pitched as “ultra-breathable” with enhanced air circulation. Waterproof protectors can be notoriously clammy, so I always look for a balance between barrier protection and a surface that doesn’t feel like it’s sealing the mattress. In-store testing can’t replicate a full night’s heat build-up, but from touch alone this doesn’t feel like one of those shiny, sweat-trapping membranes. That’s a positive sign, even if I can’t confirm temperature regulation without a home trial.
Mattress comfort
Comfort is where a protector either earns its keep or becomes the thing you quietly remove and never mention again. The biggest win for the Select Mattress Protector, in my view, is that it doesn’t announce itself. When I ran my hand across it and flexed it in-store, it didn’t have that crunchy, high-friction sound that cheaper waterproof protectors often have. That matters more than people think; noisy bedding can genuinely disrupt light sleepers, and it can also make the whole bed feel less “hotel” and more “hospital”.
It also feels relatively soft for something that claims full waterproofing. Many waterproof protectors achieve the barrier but at the cost of a slightly stiff, plasticky top that changes the feel of your mattress. Here, the surface seems more textile-like, which should help preserve the intended feel of your mattress, particularly if you’ve invested in a comfort-forward foam or hybrid. My opinion is simple: if you’ve spent real money on a mattress, it’s a shame to dull its comfort with a cheap protector that feels like a compromise.
Suitability
This protector makes most sense for households where waterproofing isn’t optional: families with children, pet owners, anyone managing night sweats, and frankly anyone who wants to protect a mattress from the slow accumulation of spills and body moisture. The product is described as safe for the whole family, washable at 40°C , and easy to remove, which is exactly what I want to see. Protectors only work if people actually keep them on the bed, and ease-of-use is a bigger deal than brands like to admit.
On the allergen side, the claim is that it can reduce dust mite allergens, cat hair and dog hair by up to 93.7% . That’s a bold number, and while I’m not dismissing it, I do think it’s important to frame it properly. A protector can help reduce exposure and make cleaning easier, but it won’t replace regular washing of bedding, vacuuming, and general bedroom hygiene. If you’re highly sensitive, I’d see this as part of a broader approach rather than a cure-all. For most people though, anything that makes the sleep environment cleaner with minimal effort is a win.
If you’re a very hot sleeper, I’d still be cautiously optimistic rather than totally convinced. “Breathable” and “waterproof” can coexist, but not every waterproof membrane behaves well across different body temperatures and duvets. From my in-store assessment, it feels less likely to cause that clammy sensation than cheaper options, but I can’t pretend a quick test under retail lighting is the same as eight hours in July.
What customers thought
The customer feedback I saw is short but telling: people like the reassurance that their mattress is protected from accidents, and they appreciate that it “doesn’t affect sleep”. That last point is actually the highest praise a protector can get. Most customers don’t want to feel the protector at all; they just want the mattress kept safe. In my experience, the protectors that get returned or relegated to the linen cupboard are the ones that change the feel of the bed, rustle when you turn over, or make the sheets shift around. The general tone of the feedback aligns with my in-store impression: it’s protective, but not intrusive.
The verdict
I’m going to be very direct: if your main priority is price, you can absolutely find cheaper waterproof protectors. However, many of them come with the classic drawbacks: noise, stiffness, and that unpleasant synthetic feel that makes a nice mattress feel oddly downgraded. The Select Mattress Protector feels like a step up in quality, and for me the quieter, more fabric-like finish is the real selling point. The Purotex probiotic technology is interesting and potentially beneficial, but I’d buy this primarily because it feels nicer and less “cheap waterproof layer”, not because I’m relying on probiotics to transform my allergies.
Based on my in-store testing, I’d recommend it for anyone who wants dependable waterproofing without sacrificing the overall feel of their bed. I do want to be transparent that my evaluation was conducted in person in-store and did not include a home trial, so I can’t fully confirm long-night breathability in every season. Even so, if you want a protector that does its job quietly, feels a bit more premium to the touch, and should be easy to live with day-to-day, this is a sensible buy.
