Why our sleep experts loved it
The iGel™ Advance 2050i Mattress features a premium, high-tech material at it's core: Graphene. I got my hands on this one in-store and the first thing I did was run my palm across the cover and press into the top layer, it has that slightly 'cool to the touch' feel you expect from iGel, rather than the warm, sinky feel you get with a lot of memory foam. When you sleep, the body releases lactic acid and carbon dioxide. This is the process that builds up muscle fatigue and creates wrinkles - which is why you want to have a mattress that can regulate temperature. The Graphene in iGel™ technology acts like a heat sink, absorbing the body's heat and transferring it to the surrounding air.
As a result, your skin will feel cooler and more comfortable all night long. When I lay on it on my back for a few minutes, I could feel the surface staying pretty neutral temperature-wise, but if you like that proper cold-bed feel, it isn't that, it's more 'not getting too warm'. The technology also works in reverse: when you sleep on an iGel™-enabled mattress, the mattress cools down, absorbing your body's heat and circulating it through the mattress with every movement. As a result, your body will stay cool and fresh throughout the night. Worth saying, if you're the sort that sleeps in a really warm room or you run hot anyway, iGel can help, but it won't magically fix a thick duvet and no airflow. As well as regulating temperature, iGel™ technology helps provide pressure relief against aches and pains so you can get to sleep faster.
This technology is unique to the iGel range and isn't available elsewhere. Further to the impressive iGel on offer, you also get an impressive 2050 pocket springs that are better than traditional open coil springs found in lesser quality mattresses. When I pushed down with my fist and then shifted my weight around, you can feel those pocket springs responding in smaller sections rather than the whole mattress moving as one, which is exactly what you want for support. That said, higher spring counts are great, but they don't automatically mean you'll love the feel, the comfort layers still do a lot of the heavy lifting. With pocket springs, the more the better with 1000 being typical for most mattresses. More springs does not equate to a firmer mattress, rather, just better body contouring and support.
In this instance, the iGel Advance 2050i Mattress is a medium tension mattress, making it ideal for those looking for something that is soft (thanks to the iGel) yet firmer (thank to the pocket springs specified tension). On my side, I got decent pressure relief through the shoulder, but if you're a lighter side sleeper you might still find it a touch too 'on top' rather than properly cushioning. Edge support was decent when I sat on the side to mimic putting socks on, but it isn't the most rigid edge I've tried, you can still compress it if you perch right on the corner. Best suited to those looking for an all rounder that will satisfy both side sleepers and back sleepers alike.
