Why Our Sleep Experts Loved It

becky says

Memory foam mattresses can be a great way to sleep, providing a good degree of comfort that is often unrivalled by competing products. It isn’t without its downsides though, it gets far too hot and can cause restlessness in those looking for good quality sleep. So what if there was a different way? What if you could take the benefits of memory foam but without the pitfalls? Enter the iGel Advance 4400i Plush Top Mattress with graphene gel foam technology, a product that aims to get you the best of both worlds and more. But does it live up to the hype? Let’s find out below.

Let’s start by looking at who this mattress is for. First, we have the pocket spring support layer. This layer is the most important of all as it is where you derive all your support, get it wrong and you won’t have a good night's sleep. In this instance pocket springs are my favourite base layer and the more of them, to a point, the better. In an effort to stand out and showcase its great quality, iGel have included a monstrous 4400 springs in a tight array that respond to each and every movement you make. But what does this mean? It means your back and neck will be protected and regardless of how you sleep, you will have sufficient contouring. Edge support is good too, you would expect as much since the springs go right to the edge, giving you full zonal support that goes right to the edge, maximising surface area and allowing you to sleep how you like. Secondly we have the comfort layer, vital to how a mattress feels to the touch and important for giving you the comfort that pairs with the support outlined above. Gel foam, or iGel as it has been coined in this instance has graphene infused to provide a material that is uncanny to that of memory foam when pressed down on, but without the heat building up inside like competing models. What this means is you get all their benefits with none of the downsides making for a truly fantastic night's sleep.

So we’ve outlined who will benefit from this mattress, but what about those it isn’t suitable for? Being a medium tension mattress that number is actually fairly minimal since it suits both side sleepers and back sleepers alike by giving enough support for the neck and back, with enough “give” for side sleepers to feel cocooned in that blissful foam while they sleep. There is one big elephant in the room around suitability however, and that lies in the cost. Most people cannot spend 4 figure sums on their mattress and while I can absolutely commend this mattress for everything it does, it will still alienate many who are on a budget. It’s a shame too, I’ve personally trialed this range in stores and the performance is second to none.

Onto where the mattress competes and as mentioned above, this product is priced in the upper premium segment. Fortunately it’s performance and great guarantee reflects the same arena and those who are able to spend this sort of money on a mattress will find themselves rewarded with great nights sleep for years to come.

When it comes to firmness it is important to point out that it is entirely subjective and you may find a mattress feels firmer or softer than advertised. In an effort to combat this iGel have made this a medium tension mattress at a rating of 5/10 on the firmness scale and it’s a number that is fairly accurate. Naturally you may find it firmer or softer than that but much of this involves just getting used to the new mattress, after all, you’ve had your old one for how many years?

Onto customer feedback and while I know people are going to love this mattress, feedback right now is slim. See, it’s brand new to the lineup at time of writing and while we have seen similar specifications sold previously with great feedback, this one is still brand new. We’ve trialed iGel previously and are confident that many will find comfort with this product. However, you’re going to have to wait a little longer for reviews to start coming in.

How does it feel?

Key Performance Indicators KPI question mark

Our Key Performance Indicators are produced using a combination of specification-heavy algoritmic data points and user reviews. For example, a firm pocket spring support layer is more breathable and offers better back support but may prove unsuitable for side sleepers, the reverse is true for a soft-medium tension reflex foam support layer. This is one of 100+ datapoints considered when generating the below ratings.

*Assuming average weight, suitability will vary dependant on body type, use the quiz above for a more tailored guide.
  • Back Sleepers
  • The amount of support offered from a mattress will vary depending on the firmness of the tension and the type of support layer used. Based on a person of average build.
  • Side Sleepers
  • If you sleep on your side you typically need a supportive tension that is not too firm, nor too soft. This is because your hips and shoulders need adequate sinkage.
  • Stomach Sleepers
  • Stomach sleepers need a reasonable amount of tension in the base support layer to adequately offer body contouring and help prevent aches and pains. Results will vary based on your build.

  • Breathability
  • Mattresses that feature breathable materials help promote airflow and keep you cool making for a more hygienic night's sleep.
  • Stability
  • Depending on the type of support layer in place can have an impact on stability, edge to edge support and roll together prevention. Pocket springs of a firmer tension will have better stability than open coil soft tension, for example.

  • Initial Odour
  • Materials in mattresses, particularly memory foam and rolled bed-in-a-box mattresses can have an initial odour, this is typically short term and reduces considerably within 24 hours.
  • Long Standing Odour
  • Certain materials inside different mattresses can produce a small odour. Typically this is short term rather than long standing but there are minor exceptions.

What Makes The iGel Advance 4400i Plush Top Mattress Great?

Luxuriously indulgent plushtop layer – for optimum levels of surface comfort?

The plushtop layer gives enhanced comfort over traditional comfort layers. Think of a plushtop as the ultimate in comfort layer, deeper than most other rivals and luxuriously soft, plush tops have surpassed pillow tops in quality and convenience.

Powered by an ultra deep 8.5cm of iGel™ Advance Graphene Technology – intelligent temperature regulation helps you sleep not too hot, not too cold, just right

The iGel™ Advance foam has an advanced and breathable design that provides a comfortable and cool sleeping environment. The system features a comfortable gel layer that helps promote airflow for enhanced comfort and a better sleep experience.

iGel™ Advance Graphene - 7 times faster heat transfer than standard foam, Graphene is cleaner than synthetic additives

The biggest downside to traditional memory foam is around heat retention. The iGel graphene is a unique design that sees better performance and enhanced cooling via the heat transfer over standard foam.

iGel™ Advance intelligent temperature regulation - proven to absorb, store and release heat to help you remain at the ideal sleep temperature – within the 35° to 37° Celsius comfort zone

iGel isn't just about being 7 times better for heat regulation over memory foam, it's also about the intelligent temperature regulation beyond that. See, being too cold can be just as disruptive as being too hot. Fortunately, the iGel formula keeps you at a temperature that promotes deep sleep consistantly.

Nothing feels quite this good - with iGel™ Advance patented know-how, exclusively at Bensons for Beds, we’ve perfected a feel that’s like nothing else

iGel Advance is the name for the new range of iGel mattresses, all of which feature graphene gel foam materials that perform similar to memory foam but without many of the downsides around heat retention and heat build up.

Opulent super loft and super soft stretch-knit cover - luxuriously soft and breathable, with eye-catching centre panel design

Soft and stretch knit covers are standard for many of the mattresses you see today. The benefit being that the breathable design ensures you remain cool while you sleep which means less sweat followed by a more hygienic nights sleep.

4400 premium pocketed springs - for individual comfort and support, with reduced partner disturbance

When it comes to pocket springs, the higher the number generally the better. See, the more springs you have in a confined area, the better contouring and support you will get in that area. 4400 springs is at the top end and will give premium support that will react to each of your movements.

AdvantEdge™ superior edge support – premium support along the edge of the mattress, for added durability and to increase the mattress sleeping area

Unique to iGel mattresses, the AdvantEdge™ platform is available in part thanks to the premium pocket spring system housed within. With additional edge support, you get a firmer edge regardless of tension meaning you are able to spread yourself over each and every inch of the mattress allowing you to utilise more of the product and spread out while you sleep.

Soothing and supportive pressure relief - iGel™ Advance can help reduce aches and pains, with pressure relieving Gel crystals for targeted support where your body needs it most

Another on the benefits of the iGel Advance range. The combination of high quality pocket springs paired with high quality gel foam gives zonal support that targets each area of your body wit individual contouring and adjustment. The result is that no part of your body that is making contact with the mattress is going to be without contrasting pressure and support.

FreshNow™ advanced moisture wicking - helps to prevent waking caused by humidity, for an all-night fresher feel

New to the range but growing in popularity comes the new FreshNow™ material utilised in many of the more premium mattresses from this retailer. The FreshNow™ remains soft and luxurious to the touch but features additional moisture wicking features that will keep you cool while you sleep.

iPure™ - our cleanest formula foams and fibres, with more recycled PET polyester fibre content (80%), and fewer synthetic additives

Specific to the iGel range,  the mattress is CertiPur™ accredited thanks to the iPure™ mattress construction which features significant polyester fibre content that is cleaner than competing products, made up of loss synthetic additives that make for one of the cleanest formula foams and fibres available.

In partnership with the BCA (British Chiropractic Association) - the largest and longest established association for chiropractors in the United Kingdom

A BCA partnership helps to highlight the quality of the support layer on offer in this mattress. A BCA partnership helps highlight that the mattress has been designed and tested to chiropractor standards resulting in better back and neck support.

Mattress depth – 40cm

When it comes to mattress depth, the deeper a product is, the more room it has for deep fillings that will have you sinking into the mattress. 40cm is one of the deepest we have ever seen and will certainly require deep fitted sheets to cover.

2 comfort choices – Soft or Medium

With two different tensions available, both toward the softer end, your options are quite good. The soft is going to prove more suitable for side sleepers and those with a lower BMI, while combination sleepers and those who are of average of heavier BMI will find the medium tension more suitable.

Easy Care – No turn mattress?

A no turn mattress basically means that it is one sided and does not require flipping over. There are pros and cons to this depending on your circumstance. First, the pros are that there is far less maintenance and hassle as you do not have to flip every few months, this can be more of a pain than you think given the weight of the product and also whether or not it features turning handles. There are a few cons however, namely when it comes to wear and tear. A non-flip mattress has the comfort layer on the top and so your maximum surface area is halved over a double sided mattress which can increase wear and reduce lifespan. Nowadays quality standards prevent this from being too much of an issue and expected lifespan of a one-sided mattress is still a fairly long time.

Free 10 year guarantee – for total peace of mind

A 10 year guarantee shows just how much faith a manufacturer and retailer have in their product. The industry is still plagued by far too many 1-year guarantees and this one helps highlight a change toward better standards and consumer confidence.
