Mattress price report: what UK mattress prices do across the year

How often does a mattress price change, how far does it drop, and is Black Friday any cheaper than the rest of the year?

7+years of price history

We've recorded 191,312 prices for 1,867 mattress listings across 20 UK retailers since June 2019. Each price is checked against that listing's own median price over the previous 90 days, so a premium hybrid and a budget foam mattress are each judged against what they usually cost.

That comparison answers the question a sale banner can't: is today's price low for this mattress, or is it the price it usually sits at?

Key findings

"Usual price" means the listing's own median over the previous 90 days.

  1. Most listings do drop if you can wait: 403 of the 554 mattress listings with enough history fell 10% or more below their usual price at least once, typically by 20.0%.
  2. Drops are something you wait for: on 13.6% of recorded days a listing sat 10% or more below its own 90-day median.
  3. The average mattress listing was at its usual price, within half a percent of its own 90-day median, on 63.4% of the days we recorded it.
  4. Most days the price doesn't move. Across 115,417 pairs of prices recorded on consecutive days, the price changed in 4.0% of them.
  5. In the Black Friday window the average listing sat only 1.2% below its usual price. Drops were more common in that window, at 18.8% of days 10% or more below the median against 13.6% for the rest of the year.
  6. The January sale window looks much the same: 17.8% of days 10% or more below the median, with the average price 1.5% below it.
  7. Of the 112 mattress listings we've tracked since before 2021 and still track, 93 cost more now than in their first six months and 18 cost less. The median change is +34.7%, roughly in line with general inflation over the same years.

Black Friday and the January sale against the rest of the year

In the Black Friday window the average mattress listing sat about 1.2% below its usual price. Drops were more common in that window, on 18.8% of days against 13.6% for the rest of the year, but not deep or widespread enough to move the average far. The January window averaged 1.5% below the median, against 0.1% below it for the rest of the year.

Black Friday, year by year

The Black Friday window had more price drops than the rest of the same year in all four of the years with enough prices recorded to compare. The years 2019, 2024 and 2025 are left out: too few mattress listings had enough earlier prices to compare against, or we recorded only one day of prices in that window. So the year-by-year comparison runs only to 2023.

How to judge a sale price

Judge a sale price against what that mattress has cost lately, not against the crossed-out price beside it. A crossed-out price tells you what the listing asked at some point; it doesn't tell you when, or for how long.

Check the 90-day line. Every mattress page on WantMattress shows the lowest price we've recorded in the last 90 days and the lowest we've ever recorded. If today's price is at or near the 90-day low, it's a good price for that mattress. If it's well above it, you've seen it cheaper recently.

Measure the drop against the usual price. When a mattress price did fall 10% or more below its usual level, the typical drop was 20.0%. A sale price only a few percent under the usual price is close to the normal price, however it's labelled.

Don't wait for Black Friday if the price is already right. The average Black Friday price sat only 1.2% below usual, so a price already well under its 90-day median is beating the typical Black Friday price.

Leave these out of the decision:

  • A countdown timer on its own: check the 90-day line instead.
  • A percentage off a crossed-out price you haven't seen charged.
  • A price for a different size from the one you're buying: compare like with like.

Long-run price change by brand

Mattress listings that have stayed on sale for years mostly cost more now. Their median change of +34.7% is roughly in line with general inflation: the ONS consumer prices index rose 32.1% from its 2020 average to August 2026. The table compares each listing's median price in its first six months with its median over its latest 90 days, for the 112 mattress listings we first recorded before 2021 and have recorded again in the last 120 days. A listing can change spec or the size we record under the same name over that time, and listings that were dropped are not in it, so read these as what the price did rather than what a like-for-like mattress costs.

Where the prices come from

Prices come from the retailer listings we already track for our product pages. The retailers we've tracked longest supply most of the history. The newer ones add range but only a year or two of prices, so they count for little in the long-run table.

How these numbers are made

We record a listing's price each time our price sync reads that retailer's listing, from retailer feeds or the listing page itself. That isn't every day: some stretches were read daily and others weekly or less, so every figure on this page is counted per recorded day, and each listing is weighted equally so one read daily doesn't outweigh one read weekly. Each listing is one size, the one the retailer's feed or page gives us, so the prices are for that size only.

Prices of zero are left out (they're placeholders for listings with no price), and so is any price below 0.4 times or above 2.5 times that listing's median over everything we've recorded, which catches the odd misread page. A price is compared with the median of the same listing's prices over the previous 90 days, and only once there are at least 10 earlier prices in that window. "On offer" here means 10% or more below that median, and the key-finding shares use listings with at least 10 such comparisons.

The Black Friday window runs from seven days before Black Friday (the day after the fourth Thursday in November) to Cyber Monday. The January window runs from 26 December to 31 January. The long-run table takes listings first recorded before 2021 and recorded again in the last 120 days of data. Only listings still in our catalogue are counted, on sale or retired; children's, cot, refurbished, topper and protector listings are left out. These figures describe the prices we recorded. They say nothing about why a price moved. Spotted an error? Tell us and we will correct it.
