Becky’s take

By Becky Reeve

Checked against current models and prices in October 2026

Nectar is the better buy for most people, and the trial is the reason. Nectar gives you 365 nights to try it at home (as of October 2026), which is the longest I know of, and a long home trial is the best thing the boxed brands ever did for buyers. The Nectars we list are all medium hybrids, memory foam over pocket springs, and they're cheap for what you get. Use the year, and sleep through a hot spell and a cold one before you decide.

Sealy is a vast catalogue sold in shops. The Sealys people buy most are firm open-coil beds with the word orthopaedic on them, which means firm and tells you nothing about the springs. Where Sealy wins is choice. It has five firmnesses and latex in the range, where Nectar is medium and memory foam, and nothing else. If you want firm, or latex, or to lie on it in a shop first, only Sealy can help.

If you're heavier than average, buy a firm Sealy latex mattress, the Newton say, because a medium hybrid will let your hips drop.

Head to head

Sealy has 20 of its 57 mattresses sprung and 8 all memory foam; Nectar has sprung throughout, every model a hybrid. Only Sealy offers latex, in 11 models. Sealy runs from soft-medium to extra firm, and every Nectar mattress is medium. Sealy covers more of the firmness scale, which helps if two sleepers need different feels. Nectar is the cheaper way in, though not by much. At the top end Sealy goes further still.

Sealy

Sealy has formerly separated from Silentnight, who once managed the UK arm of the popular retailer and will now be re-acquired by Tempur Sealy International. For those who don’t know, Sealy is the world's biggest bed brand that’s not down to luck, Sealy mattresses are highly regarded and at a price point that is achievable for the vast majority of people. What’s more, the company produces handmade beds right here in the UK using some of the finest fillings and upholstery.

Sealy’s Posturepedic technology makes it ideal for those with back and neck pain looking for that additional bit of support, becoming the only partner to be approved under the Orthopaedic Advisory Board

Nectar

Nectar is one of the biggest direct-to-consumer mattress brands in the UK, part of the Resident Home group that also owns DreamCloud. The brand launched in the US and expanded to the UK with a focused proposition: a well-made memory foam mattress sold direct at competitive pricing, backed by the longest trial period available in the UK market. Nectar's UK catalogue splits into memory foam and hybrid pocket spring builds, each sold in a Classic and a Premier tier, covering the all-foam and hybrid pocket spring buyer profiles.

What defines Nectar in the market is not the mattress technology itself, which is competent but not unique, but the buyer protection terms wrapped around it. A 365-night home trial and a Forever Warranty that covers the original buyer for life are both category-leading and are the primary reason most UK buyers put Nectar on their shortlist.

Sealy owner satisfaction

Satisfaction is at the heart of what Sealy offers. Since their inception Sealy has offered numerous different base and comfort layers to try and appease all areas of the market. The company has largely remained successful in their plight thanks to their strong support within the mid-tier market. Owners are mostly happy with what they bought, and comfort is the thing they mention most often. Back pain easing comes up as well, with one owner writing "my backache has virtually disappeared now". The complaints are far fewer, and firmness is the main one: some owners found theirs harder than expected and a smaller number softer, with one calling it "Harder than the model we tried in the shop". Dips forming where people sleep are the other complaint that recurs.

Sealy supportiveness

The Sealy lineup includes everything from soft-medium through to firm tensions. The most popular in the range are the mediums which give the best overall support for most people, pairing well with the pocket spring support layer to offer full body contouring for all-round support without feeling too-firm.

For those looking for a bit more support, Sealy has firmness grades exceeding firm and entering extra-firm territory. We would personally recommend these only for specific circumstances as comfort is reduced slightly to better aid support.

Sealy durability

When it comes to durability Sealy performs in line with expectation. We do see a bit of fallout from some of the cheaper in the range, particularly the open coil sprung models which, combined with a single sided comfort layer often do not have long-lasting properties and may not afford as good value as initially perceived due to their reduced operating lifespan. Contrary to this is the excellent pocket sprung options on offer from Sealy, particularly when paired with a double sided comfort layer. A combination of these will ensure you get a long standing mattress that will last far better and in-line with the average expectancy where people typically look at replacing their mattress (7 years)

Nectar owner satisfaction

The 365-night trial is the single most important satisfaction driver for Nectar and the one thing that separates the brand from almost every direct-to-consumer rival. Most competitors offer 100 to 200 nights. Nectar gives you a full year, which is enough time to sleep through seasonal temperature changes and genuinely assess whether the mattress suits your body. Returns within the trial period are collected free of charge and the refund process has been reliable on the cases we have followed.

Side sleepers consistently rate Nectar highest among the buyer profiles we track, because the memory foam comfort layer cradles the shoulder and hip more effectively than most hybrid alternatives at similar prices. Back sleepers also report strong satisfaction. The main area where feedback dips is temperature, with the all-foam Memory model sleeping warmer than the Hybrid or than competing spring-based alternatives.

Nectar supportiveness

The Nectar Memory uses a breathable foam top layer over pressure-relieving memory foam and a zoned support base. The feel sits at medium firm and the foam contours to the body in the classic memory foam way, distributing weight evenly and reducing pressure at the shoulders and hips. For side sleepers and back sleepers of average weight, the support profile works well without feeling too firm or too soft.

The Nectar Hybrid adds a pocket spring core beneath the foam comfort layers. The springs bring structural support, edge stability and airflow that the all-foam Memory model lacks. Heavier sleepers over around sixteen stone should look at the Hybrid rather than the Memory, because the pocket spring core handles higher body weights without the compression that an all-foam build can suffer under heavier loads.

Nectar durability

Nectar uses memory foam at reasonable densities across the range, and the Forever Warranty is the strongest signal of how confident the brand is in the long-term performance of its products. The warranty covers the original buyer for as long as they own the mattress, which is longer than any other UK mattress warranty we are aware of. Standard conditions apply around proper use and a supportive base, but the headline coverage is really lifelong.

Being owned by Resident Home gives Nectar the corporate infrastructure to honour that warranty at scale, which matters because a lifetime warranty from a small standalone brand carries less practical weight than one from a group with multiple brands and established operations. The foam quality is consistent with what a mattress at this price tier should deliver, and the Hybrid model adds pocket spring longevity to the foam layers above.

I’ve been sleeping on this mattress for a few nights now and I’m pleased to say it’s making a positive difference. I was hoping for something supportive and comfortable, and this mattress delivers on both fronts. What I like The medium-firm feel hits a nice balance: not so hard that you feel like you’re lying on a plank, yet firm enough to feel properly supported. The product’s description calls it “medium-firm” and highlights the balance between support and plushness. The cooling feature is visible: the mattress uses INFUSE™ Black Diamond Graphite foam (which I must admit sounded fancy to me) to help with temperature regulation. According to the spec it “keeps you cool while cushioning your hips and back”. On warmer nights I’ve noticed I’m less restless. Excellent support for back and hips: I wake up without the usual niggles around the lower back and shoulders that I used to get with older mattresses. The “AlignSupport® coils” and plant-based ComfortCore layer appear to be doing their job. Good edge support: the mattress doesn’t feel as though you’ll roll off when you get close to the edge, and the usable surface feels generous. That’s helpful when two of us are sharing it. Quality and build: the cover feels robust, the stitching seems neat, and while I won’t pretend to have dismantled it, it gives a sense of quality rather than a bargain compromise. Where there’s room for improvement (or things to know) It’s a bit heavier/setup-intensive than my old one: rotating or manoeuvring it takes a bit of effort. If you prefer a super soft, sinking-in feel (the “body-hug” kind) this mattress might feel a little firm. Some reviews of the same family of mattresses note that side-sleepers (especially lightweight ones) might find medium-firm less contouring than they’d like. As with many new mattresses, there was a short adjustment period for my body clock and sleep-muscles to adapt. The first two nights felt slightly unfamiliar; by night three I was into it. Cooling is better than my previous mattress, but if you’re a very hot sleeper I wouldn’t say it’s magic. The spec claims better temperature control but some users of related models still noted some heat retention. Verdict In my view this is a strong pick if you want a mattress that blends support with comfort, especially if you’ve got a back that lets you know when the mattress is doing a poor job. For someone like me (part-time mystic, allotment keeper, old bones) it feels like a good investment in sleep rather than just a piece of furniture. I’d say I’m waking up more rested, and that alone makes the change worthwhile.

Lying on a bed in a shop fully clothed for a few minutes is one thing. Lying on it for 8 hours in thin nightwear is something else. I tried the Newton bed in the shop and it seemed comfortable, although it may have been there years and hundreds of customers may have bounced on it. Once delivered (and Bensons were totally professional in that regard) I got backache after one night. Others have remarked their bed seemed firmer than in the shop. Dreams sell the same mattress but they call it Hagen and rate it very firm which it certainly is. I found I could get my hands behind the small of my back and exactly the same when I lay on the floor !! I also got cubital tunnel syndrome (hard bed pressed on shoulder and elbow causing pain down arm and little finger went numb !) A topper improved things a bit but if you need a topper to make your bed comfy you're probably lying on the wrong bed ! After a week of pain I decided to switch to a medium Newton which you wouldn't know existed if you only went in the store and didn't look online. I zoom called Bensons HQ who confirmed none of their shops displayed it. So why didn't I order a medium in the first place ? I didn't like the idea of buying a bed I hadn't tried first (if that is any guide) but in the end I was forced to ! Now medium doesn't mean soft. It just means slightly less firm !! I phoned Sealy HQ who explained the only difference is Newton Medium has firm and medium foam, not extra firm foam like their firm version. I'd give Newton firm a 9/10 rating for firmness and Newton Medium 7/10 although that may ease to a 6 in a few months. Incidentally I did consider the Bronte too. I had a pillow top but found it got frayed and torn after 6 years (I'm a restless sleeper), was heavier to turn, higher and the sheets didn't fit. As others have mentioned I found it warm to lie on after just 10 minutes so wondered how hot it would be after 8 hours. To be brutally honest I didn't think it worth an extra £400 which is a lot for a pensioner ! If you want a soft top buy a mattress topper for the Newton Medium and save yourself the extra expense. A final point, I found the Newton Medium somewhat lighter than the firm, probably due to the lack of hard heavy-duty foam.

Absolutely horrible. This is a completely unbiased review after owning it for almost 4 months now, and rotating it around as per instructions. After trying out a few beds in various stores and doing some research into the kind of bed I wanted in an Extra Firm, this was one was the best *when I tried laying down on it in store*. However, when I received this, it felt like a completely different mattress - soft, pudgy, sinks down in the middle (what Central zoning PowerPack/lumbar support technology? Is this a scam?) and downright uncomfortable. I got this to help with a back injury I suffered a while back, so that means solid support that keeps that back held up firm, but this was the opposite, and the softness of it actually caused me more pain and discomfort in the long run. EdgeGuard - newsflash: it has no EdgeGuard support or technology in it. You roll off the edge just like on a standard mattress. Extra Firm rating: Nothing more than a lie. There is nothing about this that could classify it as extra firm. Other than its bad quality, the firmness rating would be medium to firm. Definitely not Extra Firm, and it was definitely not the same mattress I tried in store. The only positives were the delivery crew were amazing. Top lads. I really regret not going with my initial option from mattressonline, which had the same specs and was cheaper too. I would not even pay £200 for this rubbish.

In the store this was the most comfortable mattress. We tried nearly every mattress in the shop. The selling point was the construction of the mattress and the salespersons insistence this was one of the most popular and highly rated mattress in the U.K. We bought the mattress and the delivery was arranged. First class service. Once the mattress has been delivered and the packaging removed, the smell was overpowering in the room. This was described to us as the mattress "off gassing" and the smell would dissipate within 48 hours. Luckily we have extra bedroom so it was left to vent its gasses. Two weeks later I decided to make up the bed even though the "off gassing" was still there. We have slept in it once, my wife who suffers from asthma now sleeps in the spare room. She awoke in the night in a coughing fit. I am trying to use the bed myself but I wake up with this smell wafting from the bed. This smell was not evident in the showroom. The current advice is to place it in the garage to air properly. I am so angry about this mattress. It's a shame because we have used bensonforbeds regularly and never had any issue before. This mattress will be withdrawn from sale if they want loyal custom.

My partner and I had the goal to get ourselves a king bed and after hearing good feedback from friends and coworkers we decided Nectar was going to be the one. I experience daily back pain (moderate to constant aching) and knew I wanted something that would be firm enough in support but would also mold enough to my body to support my back (to be frank, I have a larger butt and so getting any support under my lower back requires a pillow typically). I try to sleep on my back to help with my back pain so that was important to me. It was also important that we didn't disrupt each other in the night while tossing and turning as we really value our sleep. The hybrid model is perfect. The king size of course is great for space but even more, due to the memory foam qualities I don't feel it at all when my partner moves in his sleep (he doesn't move often but when he does he sort of flops around so it always woke me up). The combination of the memory foam and the coils is such a great balance of support with softness still. And sleeping on my back is amazing (I almost can't fall asleep any other way now). The memory foam allows you to sink into the bed just enough for it to almost mold to your body and you feel as though you settle in, but the density of the foam in addition to the the coils , provides such great support. I'd never slept on anything besides a traditional springy bed on a box spring so this mattress did take some getting used to. My partner and I took a little over a month, I'd estimate, until we were absolutely sure we loved it. We are so happy with this mattress so far!!! Of course I can't speak to the longevity of the product but I'm not too worried about that based on other reviews I've read. The price was also so great! It's rare to find a king mattress at this price let alone a really good one. Cannot say enough good things about my Nectar.

My wife and I were researching new mattresses for about two months and read over 20 reviews before choosing Nectar’s Premier Hybrid 2. 1 mattress. Some of the reviews stated their reviewers thought the Nectar Premier Hybrid 2. 1 slept “warm to hot,” which was a significant concern of ours. However, the vast majority of the reviews rated the Nectar mattress as their number one pick overall. We now understand why! Until this purchase, we've never purchased a mattress online. However, due to bad experiences shopping retail mattress stores, we both expressed great reluctance to subject ourselves to shopping for a new mattress in a brick and mortar store. Nectar’s "365-Night Trial" and “Forever Warranty” made our decision easier. We’re so glad we chose the Nectar Premier Hybrid 2. 1! We also purchased a Th*** platform bed frame with headboard. After almost two months living with our Nectar mattress and Th*** bed, we’ve found the mattress DOES NOT sleep "warm to hot”! We feel the Nectar Premier Hybrid mattress is sort of the "Momma Bear Mattress"… not too cool, not too warm… just right! Our mattress is relatively firm, our rating would be maybe a 7 to 8 on a scale of 10. But it's a very comfortable firmness that slowly softens after a few minutes to a 6 or 7. Now my wife and I are sleeping better, sleeping through the night, and we both hate to get out of bed in the morning! We’re both very pleased we chose the Nectar Premier Hybrid mattress!

Let's start with the Customer Service. The mattress was scheduled for delivery but I had a last minute change to my schedule. Customer Service quickly responded to my request and reschedule delivery for a few days after I returned. No hassle, no angst. As with any boxed mattress, it was a bit of a struggle to get it into the house; after all, it IS kind of heavy. I also had to get our other mattress out of the way. My son helped me with that chore. Unboxing and installing the new mattress was, actually, fairly easy. I did this by myself: and I am 68 years old. It most certainly would have been easier with two people. . . The MOST important thing, though, is how well am I sleeping. This is among the most comfortable mattresses I've ever experienced. I have an arthritic right shoulder and, typically, when I sleep on my right side the shoulder and arm go numb. That has not happened with my new mattress. It has just the right amount of support for my 215 pounds, and I couldn't be more pleased with how it helps keep me just the right temperature. We've had nights with temperatures in the low 50's and I've had the windows open; I was comfortable. We've had nights with temperatures in the 80's and the air conditioning is set to 75 degrees; I was comfortable. I'm so pleased with this mattress and do not hesitate to recommend it to anyone.

I purchased this for my 60lb 8-year old in twin size. I normally lay down with him to read for a while before bed and was excited to have a comfy new mattress as was he. We were both disappointed when we realized this mattress was as firm as a brick on either side, even for my 190 lb self. I will be looking for a mattress topper on Amazon, as it is quite uncomfortable to lay on.

1 Alissa M.

The mattress is fantastic! We bought it for our son & are so jealous. I’m giving one star because I think this company can afford to be more generous with discounts especially for returning customers. I don’t think you can expect to get a review without a little generosity. Just some feedback for your marketing team to consider. But like I said. . fantastic matress!! Would buy only this brand if the price point wasn’t so high
