One rung up from the Classic, the Premier Memory Foam Mattress is Nectar's deeper, zoned all-foam bed, with cooling fibres on top. It's made for the committed foam fan: the average-weight back sleeper who has slept on memory foam, loved it and wants more. Couples will like how still it lies. My problem is the money. For less than this in a double, Nectar's own Classic Hybrid puts pocket springs under the foam, and that's where I'd spend it. Hot sleepers should walk away whatever the cooling fibres promise.
Cooling fibres don't change how 28cm of memory foam sleeps
Nectar sells the step up to the Premier on "Extra Cooling" and "Extra Back Support", and both are Nectar's words. The cooling comes from what Nectar calls extra cooling fibres, and a fresher fabric against your skin can help for a while. Underneath sits a deeper slab of memory foam than the Classic has, and memory foam warms up and wraps round you. More of it makes that worse, not better.
Nectar isn't a name I'd pay extra for, so a step up has to win me over on the build. A cooling label on a slab of foam doesn't.
Over the Classic, you get 3cm and some clever cuts
Against Nectar's Classic Memory Foam, the Premier is 28cm against 25cm and six layers against five. The headline extra is what Nectar calls Honeycomb Micro-Zoning: precision-cut foam that, in Nectar's words, gives different support under your head, hips and legs. Zoning by cutting the foam is a reasonable idea, but Nectar doesn't publish what's cut where, so you take the zones on trust.
Give the zones a couple of weeks in your normal position before you decide whether they're doing anything. It's still foam from top to bottom, with no springs anywhere, and it doesn't come in a small double.
A heavy bed that splits its owners
Plan for the weight. A double is about 34kg and a super king about 45kg, so turning it head to toe is a job for two, and at 28cm you'll want deep-pocket fitted sheets. Nectar's 365-night trial is generous on time, but the rules are strict: the mattress stays with you for a month before Nectar will collect it, and it must be returned clean.
Owners in Nectar's feed, most of them American buyers by the look of their reviews, split on the feel. Several side sleepers found it too hard at the shoulder, one saying their arms often feel crushed. One heavy owner says their body and the foam made a valley that didn't spring back, and wouldn't recommend it to heavier people.
A couple say the edge feels as if you'll roll off it. The happy ones talk about not feeling a partner move, which, for a light sleeper like me, is the whole appeal of foam. It's the trade I'd expect: lovely stillness, and not much for a heavy body or a side sleeper's shoulder. Avoid it if either of those is you.
What to buy instead
For most people, the Nectar Classic Hybrid: springs, a memory foam top and less money than this in a double. If you want Nectar's deeper top over springs, with the cooling it pushes hardest, the Nectar Premier Hybrid is the better Premier. If heat is the problem, no foam-topped Nectar will fix it, the hybrids included.
