Testing Team Takeaways

To test the Bodyshape 1000 Pocket Hybrid Mattress we have people from our testing team take a closer look at the mattress and form their own opinions. Below is their observations.

In the showroom, I liked the Bodyshape 1000 Pocket Hybrid more than I expected: it felt medium-firm, tidy and supportive rather than the soft “cloud-like” bed the marketing hints at. As an average-weight combi sleeper, I found it easy enough to move between back and side positions, with the 1000 pocket springs doing a better job than many budget hybrids at keeping my hips level. The reflex foam and memory foam add a little cushioning, but broad-shouldered side sleepers may want more give, and I’d be cautious if you run hot because the foam top didn’t scream cooling to me. My main gripe was the edge, which compressed noticeably when I sat on it, but for the price it feels like a sensible, supportive first mattress or guest-room upgrade.

Why our sleep experts loved it

The Bodyshape 1000 Pocket Hybrid Mattress came across better in person than I expected. It is a compact 20cm hybrid with 1000 pocket springs, reflex foam and memory foam, so the recipe is simple, familiar and sensible. For a lower-priced mattress, that mix works. It feels like a proper step up from the cheapest all-foam or open-coil beds.

The sales copy gets carried away with the “cloud-like” idea. I did not get that from lying on it. The feel is cleaner and firmer than the wording suggests, with a bit of surface comfort rather than a big soft sink. Good news for people who hate floppy mattresses. Bad news for anyone chasing a plush, hotel-style top.

What it is built from

The spring unit is the best part of the specification. A 1000 pocket spring count at this level is a welcome detail, and on the shop floor it gave the mattress a more organised feel under the body than a basic foam block. The support did not feel hollow or rattly. Small win.

The comfort layers are more modest. Reflex foam gives the top a slightly taut feel, then the memory foam adds a little contouring around the hip and shoulder. I would not call it luxurious, and I would not pay premium hybrid money for it, but as an affordable everyday mattress it makes sense. Compared with the Emma Hybrid, the Bodyshape has a simpler top feel; the Emma feels more developed, while this one is easier to justify for a spare room or tighter budget.

Practical details are decent. It arrives rolled-up, it is single-sided, and the stitched turning handles matter because rotation is the only real maintenance option. The mattress is made in the UK, approved by the National Bed Federation, and conforms to BS7177: 2008 for domestic fire resistance. The 5-year guarantee is adequate. Nothing here screams high-end, yet it does cover the basics properly.

How it felt lying down

The medium to firm rating felt accurate. On my back, my hips stayed supported and the surface gave just enough to avoid feeling harsh. Side lying was acceptable too, although I would be more cautious for broad-shouldered sleepers who need a deeper comfort layer. There is pressure relief, just in a restrained way.

Edge support is where I was less convinced. The mattress has a foam encapsulated border and the side held up reasonably while lying near it, but sitting on the edge produced more compression than I wanted. That matters in smaller sizes. A couple using every inch of a double may notice the border softening before the middle does.

Movement felt fairly well controlled during a quick roll and sit test. Pocket springs help here, and the foams take some of the sharpness out of movement. A few minutes in a store cannot tell me how the memory foam behaves through a warm night, so hot sleepers should not take the antibacterial treatment or hybrid label as proof that it will sleep cool.

Best match for this mattress

Back sleepers are the safest fit. The centre support is steady, and the comfort layer does not let the pelvis sink too far. Side sleepers of average build should also find it comfortable, provided they prefer a slightly firmer surface. Very light side sleepers may find it a touch too taut at the shoulder.

Front sleepers are more complicated. The firmer rating helps, but the 20cm build does not feel substantial enough for heavier stomach sleepers over the long term. I would look at a deeper pocket-sprung mattress from Silentnight or Sealy in that case, even if it means losing the rolled delivery convenience.

This would make a strong first proper mattress, teenager’s upgrade or guest-room buy. The broad appeal is the point: pocket springs for support, foam for cushioning and a firmness level that should suit a lot of ordinary sleepers. It is not trying to be specialist. For once, that restraint suits the product.

My shop-floor verdict

I liked it more than I expected. The Bodyshape 1000 Pocket Hybrid Mattress is a lovely little mattress for the price, with a better spring specification than many budget beds and a neatly judged medium-firm feel. I would still test the side edge before ordering, because that was the one area where it showed its budget roots. Also buy a proper mattress protector from day one: the polyester quilt is sponge-clean only, and a single-sided mattress is not something I would want to rescue after a spill.

Suitability

*Assuming average weight, suitability will vary dependant on body type, use the quiz above for a more tailored guide.
  • Back Sleepers
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • The amount of support offered from a mattress will vary depending on the firmness of the tension and the type of support layer used. Based on a person of average build.
  • Side Sleepers
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • If you sleep on your side you typically need a supportive tension that is not too firm, nor too soft. This is because your hips and shoulders need adequate sinkage.
  • Stomach Sleepers
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Stomach sleepers need a reasonable amount of tension in the base support layer to adequately offer body contouring and help prevent aches and pains. Results will vary based on your build.

Performance

  • Breathability
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Mattresses that feature breathable materials help promote airflow and keep you cool making for a more hygienic night's sleep.
  • Turning on mattress
    ★★★★★
