Why our sleep experts loved it
The Simba Hybrid Essential 1500 Pocket Spring Mattress is probably one of the better mattresses we have tested in recent months. I got my hands on this one and spent a good bit of time pressing into the top layer, sitting on the edge, and having a quick lie down in my usual back and side positions, and first impressions were properly positive. It's one of those mattresses that suits such a wide range of people that it's fairly difficult to find too much to complain about, but there are still a few things worth being aware of. To start with, the Simba Hybrid Essential 1500 Pocket Spring Mattress comes with a 60-night sleep trial, that's 60 days from the point of delivery whereby you can trial the mattress in the comfort of your own home to decide whether or not you want to keep it. The trial takes all the risk of buying online out of the equation. With many competing products you have 14 day distance selling regulations to back you up but many mattresses cannot actually be returned once slept on. This is the unique selling point of the 60-night trial with the Simba Hybrid Essential 1500 Pocket Spring Mattress and one that many will be grateful for.
With this mattress, it deviates from the all-foam mattress-in-a-box model of previous contenders by introducing a mattress with 1500 pocket springs but with all the comfort of memory foam as a top layer. When I ran my hand across the surface it had that slightly cushioned, slow-to-respond feel you expect from memory foam, rather than a bouncy foam topper. Lying on my back, I could feel the pocket springs pushing back individually under my hips and lower back, which is exactly what I want from a hybrid. Side sleeping was decent too, but if you're lighter (say under about 70kg) you might find the shoulder area a touch firmer than you'd like because the springs do a lot of the work here. The result is a mattress that is both soft and also supportive while also being made of better materials (we love pocket springs). One thing I will say though, if you sleep hot, that memory foam top layer can hold onto a bit more warmth than a straight pocket sprung mattress, so it's not automatically the coolest option in this price bracket.
This is probably my favourite mattress to date, not just because of the great quality components but primarily that offer that you can keep the product risk free for a number of days and return should you not like it. When I perched on the edge to mimic putting socks on, the edge support was fine but not rock solid, you can feel it dip a bit, which is pretty normal for a hybrid with a softer top. It's also worth knowing that if you're after a really firm, 'on top of the mattress' feel, this isn't that, it has a bit of sink from the memory foam before the springs catch you. This sort of offer is rare in the industry and one that ensures the customer really does get a suitable product.
