A wool-filled pocket bed that actually sleeps cool is rarer than the adverts make it look, and this is one of them. It suits a hot sleeper who wants natural fibres next to them instead of foam. It's single-sided, so you rotate it and you never turn it, and I'd rather have a bed with two faces. Silentnight is a bland range to me and I usually send people to a plainer label with a better spec sheet, but the wool in this one argues the other way and I will say so.
The wool is the reason, not the number on the ticket
Two thousand four hundred springs breaks down into 1,400 full-height Mirapocket springs doing the support and 1,000 minis above them softening the top. The 1,400 is a decent full-height layer for this money, which is more than I can say for a lot of beds waving bigger totals around. The full-height unit is zoned firmer through the middle third, which is meant to put the stiffest springs under your hips. Lie on it and check where your hips land if you're very tall or very short, because the zoning stops helping once they sit outside that middle third.
Mattress Online lists a Tencel Lyocell cover over a traditionally tufted surface, British wool from Cheviot sheep under the British Wool traceable scheme, a Platinum comfort layer and a layer of coir, without saying which sits where. Tufting is what stops all that shifting about. The soft white fibres listed in with the wool are synthetic, and the retailer says as much itself, so don't buy this thinking everything in it came off a sheep.
The Platinum layer is the maker talking: the claim is that it holds the good parts of memory foam without holding the heat. Nobody says what it's made of, and the breathability figure beside it has no stated basis, so ask what's in it before you let it sway you. Buy it for the wool and treat the Platinum layer as a bonus you cannot check.
Owners agree about the temperature and argue about the firmness
A couple of owners single out the temperature, and the praise is specific, which is the kind worth having. One stopped waking up to go and switch a fan on, in the middle of a heatwave. The same owner says natural fibres against the skin were why they chose it in the first place. That's a lot more use to you than another mattress promising a cool night.
On firmness, the label says Medium to Firm, and of the few owners who mention firmness, most read it firmer than that. I believe the owners. Back and front sleepers who want that resistance are who it fits. Avoid it if you are a side sleeper hoping a shoulder will sink in.
The complaints need separating, because they aren't the same complaint. One owner found springs coming through the surface padding, which is a build failure and not a matter of taste and the kind of thing that would put me off a bed. Another reports dips already, along with finding it too firm. A third says it softened nicely after a few weeks and is comfy now. My rule, and I say it on every page that leans on reviews: go and read the three-star ones. Five stars is the honeymoon.
Check your size is still listed before you fall for it
Do that before anything else. Mattress Online badges the range as a last-chance line, offers it in two sizes only, a single and a double, and its own page marks the double as no longer available. So confirm the size you need is still there and still orderable, and do it before you get attached. That's a sensible check and not a reason to rush.
The 100-Night Comfort Trial is worth reading properly too. It buys you an exchange rather than your money back, you have to buy one of the retailer's own mattress protectors to qualify, which I find a shame on a breathable wool bed, and you have to sleep on it for a month before you can ask. Use the month. Since overheating is the thing that wakes me, I'd be watching temperature at least as closely as firmness through it.
What to buy instead
If you need anything bigger than a double, this bed can't help you and the Silentnight Lift Replenish 2000 Pocket Firm is where I'd go next at the same retailer. It's a similar grade with a similar spring count, in the sizes this one has stopped doing. Pay up for the wool bed if the wool is what you came for, and ignore the spring totals on both tickets.
