Testing Team Takeaways

To test the Millbrook Smooth Tech Luxury 4000 Pocket Mattress we have people from our testing team take a closer look at the mattress and form their own opinions. Below is their observations.

In the showroom, the Millbrook Smooth Tech Luxury 4000 felt immediately supportive for me as a fairly average-weight back sleeper, with the 4000 pocket springs keeping my hips level without that slab-like orthopaedic feel. The Hampshire wool and English cotton gave it a solid, breathable, natural-fillings character, while the Nemoflex edge support made the border feel reassuringly usable. My main gripe was the “Smooth Tech” tufting: it’s neater than old-school buttoning, but I could still feel the texture when lying still, so I’d be cautious if you want a perfectly flat surface. The 60-night trial helps, but it’s a Millbrook swap rather than a refund, so I’d only shortlist this if you like a medium-firm, traditional feel from the first showroom lie-down.

What our sleep experts found

The Millbrook Smooth Tech Luxury 4000 Pocket Mattress came across in the showroom as a strong, traditional mattress with a few irritations that the name rather glosses over. The 4000 pocket spring system feels controlled and supportive, and the medium to firm rating is about right. The published 4.2-star score from 9 reviews is too small a sample to lean on heavily, so my view here is based on the shop-floor test.

Millbrook is a well-known UK maker, and this model is handcrafted in the UK with National Bed Federation approval. Those are reassuring credentials. The catch is that the mattress still needs to suit your body, your sheets, and your tolerance for a textured sleep surface.

How it is built

The filling mix is Hampshire wool and English cotton under a knitted cover. It has the drier, weightier feel I expect from natural fillings, with none of the hollow bounce I often find in cheaper boxed hybrids. The mattress is tufted, even though Millbrook’s Smooth Tech inner-tufting is meant to reduce that old-fashioned buttoned feel.

The foam-free Nemoflex core is used for edge support, and the border felt steady when I tried the side of the mattress. Millbrook also says this element uses 200 repurposed plastic bottles. Useful, but I would treat it as a construction detail rather than the main buying reason. A mattress can sound virtuous and still feel wrong after three weeks.

A practical snag: the depth is 33cm. Standard fitted sheets may struggle, so deep fitted sheets are the safer bet. The mattress is single-sided, so it only needs rotating, and the eight turning handles are welcome because the weights are not trivial:

  • Single: 33.6kg
  • Small double: 44.8kg
  • Double: 50.4kg
  • King size: 56kg
  • Superking: 67.2kg

The sugar cane plastic packaging is described as 100% recyclable, and the cover is described as viscose and chemical-free. I would be careful with the latter claim. UK mattresses still have to meet fire safety rules, and a showroom visit cannot prove anything about long-term fabric performance.

The showroom feel

Back support is where this mattress makes the strongest case for itself. My hips stayed level, and the spring unit gave a firm, even push without tipping into a hard orthopaedic feel. Against the Hypnos Wool Origins, the Millbrook has the tauter showroom feel, with quicker support through the upper layers.

Side sleeping was less convincing for my build. There is some give from the wool and cotton, then the support comes in quite promptly. People who dislike sinking may enjoy that. Lighter side sleepers, or anyone with sharper shoulders, should spend proper time on it before committing.

The tufting is the awkward bit. Smooth Tech makes the surface neater than a heavily tufted traditional mattress, yet I could still feel the tufts while lying still. This will not bother everyone, and a thick protector may soften the sensation, but buyers chasing a perfectly flat quilted feel should look elsewhere. Some Sealy Posturepedic models have a flatter top in the showroom, albeit with a different style of comfort.

I tested this in store, not through a home trial, so overnight heat is still an unknown. Natural wool and cotton usually have a good reputation for breathability, but showroom air tells you little about a warm bedroom in July.

Who should have it on the shortlist

Back sleepers are the obvious match. The medium to firm tension gives enough resistance for people wanting proper support without a brick-like surface. Combination sleepers could also get on with it, provided their side-sleeping time is not dominated by pressure at the shoulder.

Couples may appreciate the edge support because the usable width feels decent close to the border. I could not judge partner disturbance properly in a busy shop, and that matters with any pocket-sprung mattress. Two people turning through the night is a different test from one person lying still for ten minutes.

The 60-night sleep trial sounds useful, but the terms are narrower than some bed-in-a-box brands. You sleep on it for between 30 and 60 nights, then the remedy is a swap to another Millbrook mattress. There is enough range within the brand for that to be workable, including models up and down in quality, but it is not the same as a refund-led trial from Emma or Simba.

My view after testing

The cover period is decent: 10 years total, split into a 5-year warranty and a 5-year guarantee, with registration required within 60 days of purchase. I would put this on a back sleeper’s shortlist and keep it away from anyone who is fussy about surface texture. The moment that stuck with me was not the spring count; it was feeling those tufts after the label had promised smoothness.

Suitability

*Assuming average weight, suitability will vary dependant on body type, use the quiz above for a more tailored guide.
  • Back Sleepers
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • The amount of support offered from a mattress will vary depending on the firmness of the tension and the type of support layer used. Based on a person of average build.
  • Side Sleepers
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • If you sleep on your side you typically need a supportive tension that is not too firm, nor too soft. This is because your hips and shoulders need adequate sinkage.
  • Stomach Sleepers
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Stomach sleepers need a reasonable amount of tension in the base support layer to adequately offer body contouring and help prevent aches and pains. Results will vary based on your build.

Performance

  • Breathability
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Mattresses that feature breathable materials help promote airflow and keep you cool making for a more hygienic night's sleep.
  • Turning on mattress
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Certain materials like memory foam can make it difficult to move about on the mattress while you toss and turn. Same too for pillow tops which can create a cloud like sensation which can make manoeuvrability challenging.
  • Stability
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Depending on the type of support layer in place can have an impact on stability, edge to edge support and roll together prevention. Pocket springs of a firmer tension will have better stability than open coil soft tension, for example.

Ease of Use

  • Turning handles
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Mattresses typically need to be rotated frequently and having turning handles can be massively beneficial, particularly in larger sizes which can become fairly heavy.
