Why Our Sleep Experts Loved It

becky says

What does a Millbrook Smooth Tech Luxury 4000 Pocket Mattress have in common with the likes of Tempur, Dunlopillo and Hypnos? Normally not a huge amount, Millbrook is renowned for their mid-market offerings and have generally stuck toward this arena for a number of years. Not so with this Luxury 4000 mattress however where the product sees itself in the enviable position of being able to go head to head with some of the most luxurious and prestigious offerings from premium brands. Let's dive into what makes this one particularly special.

Starting with that support layer that typically sits at the base of the product and this is where you start to appreciate that something quite special is within reach. The base layer has pocket springs, which we already love and rate particularly highly, but this time in a 4000 spring setup. Now, depending on who you speak to, there is a theoretical limit of around 2500 springs before those that follow offer any benefit, however, the springs in this instance are tripped up and combine full length springs with micro-pocket springs. The result is full body contouring that adjusts and adapts to your each and every move. Roll together is a thing of the past, roll off edge protection is as strong as we've seen and the layer ultimately just does a great job of providing support which is exactly what it is supposed to be doing.

Available in a medium to firm tension this product will prove popular with those looking for enhanced back and neck support and primarily suit back and stomach sleepers, although there is room for side sleepers thanks to the less-than-firm tension.

Onto the comfort layer and the Smooth Tech Luxury 4000 Pocket packs deep and luxurious layers of wool into the top of the mattress to protect you from the springs underneath. This is great because not only is wool environmentally friendly, it is also both supremely comfortable and also very breathable. The result, when paired with equally breathable pocket springs and a good slatted base, is a mattress that breaths and allows significant air circulation to occur while you sleep. This, in turn, creates a cooler and more refreshing nights sleep where you will not get too hot, nor too cold, proving to be a perfect all-season mattress.

Long term reviews will be absent for a while yet and while we see great value in this type of premium mattress, we do begrudge that the price point may still alienate those lured in by lower prices in the industry. As a result, we don't expect the Millbrook Smooth Tech Luxury 4000 Pocket Mattress to be a bestseller overnight, and that's a shame as the quality of materials combined with fantastic 60 night sleep trial all pair beautifully with the 10 year guarantee to bring home a truly great night of sleep that your body will thank you for.

Reasons to Buy

Premium materials applied in lavish quantities makes for a fantastic option for those who can afford it.

Fantastic brand that gives more in this product than competitors at the top of this space.

A great base layer paired with a great top layer leaves nothing on the table for those who want the best.

Reasons to Avoid

Price point may alienate those looking for a good, but cheap nights sleep.

Single mattress seems at-odds with the pricing of the rest of the lineup which is far more reasonable by comparison.

Key Performance Indicators KPI question mark

Our Key Performance Indicators are produced using a combination of specification-heavy algoritmic data points and user reviews. For example, a firm pocket spring support layer is more breathable and offers better back support but may prove unsuitable for side sleepers, the reverse is true for a soft-medium tension reflex foam support layer. This is one of 100+ datapoints considered when generating the below ratings.

*Assuming average weight, suitability will vary dependant on body type, use the quiz above for a more tailored guide.
  • Back Sleepers
  • The amount of support offered from a mattress will vary depending on the firmness of the tension and the type of support layer used. Based on a person of average build.
  • Side Sleepers
  • If you sleep on your side you typically need a supportive tension that is not too firm, nor too soft. This is because your hips and shoulders need adequate sinkage.
  • Stomach Sleepers
  • Stomach sleepers need a reasonable amount of tension in the base support layer to adequately offer body contouring and help prevent aches and pains. Results will vary based on your build.

  • Breathability
  • Mattresses that feature breathable materials help promote airflow and keep you cool making for a more hygienic night's sleep.
  • Turning on mattress
  • Certain materials like memory foam can make it difficult to move about on the mattress while you toss and turn. Same too for pillow tops which can create a cloud like sensation which can make manoeuvrability challenging.
  • Stability
  • Depending on the type of support layer in place can have an impact on stability, edge to edge support and roll together prevention. Pocket springs of a firmer tension will have better stability than open coil soft tension, for example.

Ease of Use

  • Turning handles
  • Mattresses typically need to be rotated frequently and having turning handles can be massively beneficial, particularly in larger sizes which can become fairly heavy.

  • Initial Odour
  • Materials in mattresses, particularly memory foam and rolled bed-in-a-box mattresses can have an initial odour, this is typically short term and reduces considerably within 24 hours.
  • Long Standing Odour
  • Certain materials inside different mattresses can produce a small odour. Typically this is short term rather than long standing but there are minor exceptions.

What Makes The Millbrook Smooth Tech Luxury 4000 Pocket Mattress Great?

Includes a 60 Night Sleep Trial: swap with any other Millbrook mattress if you don't love it!

Sleep trials are a fantastic pro-consumer option that allow you to try-while-you-buy. It's the best of both worlds, you get to order your mattress from the comfort of your own home while having much of the same flexibility of an instore purchase where you get to try out the product and make sure it is for you. Terms and conditions vary retailer to retailer, but ultimately you will be able to swap this mattress for an alternative to find the right solution for you.

Filled with Hampshire wool and English cotton for total comfort and support

Wool is a great option for the comfort layer of mattresses for a number of reasons. First, it is breathable enough to allow air to flow sufficiently to ensure great all-season long cooling that won't have you too hot, or too cold. Additional to this you have other advantages like durability, flexibility, flame and water resistance. Ultimately wool is a sustainable and renewable option that is environmentally friendly and supremely comfortable.

Encapsulated in Nemoflex™, this mattress offers excellent edge to edge support

The supportive edge system is designed to prevent roll off while you sleep while also creating a safe and supportive edge that will avoid dipping and increase durability.

Nemoflex™ is made up of 200 repurposed plastic bottles

The bottles are collected from recycling centres and then cleaned and sterilised before being used to create the mattress. The mattress is then covered with a special fabric that is designed to wick away moisture and keep the mattress clean.

4000 individual pocket springs to bring you absolute support

Pocket springs are always my default go-to when it comes to recommendations surrounding support systems. See, pocket springs just do it better thanks to their individual and pocketed nature they are able to contour to your body better, reacting to each and every movement your body makes and allowing for full zoned support. Generally perform better than poorer reflex foam and open coil spring units.

Smooth Tech™ technology removes the pesky tufts on a mattress, for a smooth surface

Foam free Nemoflex™ core

Foam free models are becoming increasingly popular as part of an anti-foam initiative been driven by many of the legacy builders of traditional mattresses. Foam has many positive properties but can often cause overheating thanks to poor breathability that this product does not have issue with.

Beautiful viscose chemical-free cover that gives superb comfort

Medium to firm mattress for a great mixture of firmness and cosiness!

No need to turn over - just rotate it with the eight sturdy turning handles

Single side mattresses have a few pros and cons compared to traditional double sided mattresses. The main positive is that you do not need to flip, meaning a hassle free low maintenance product. The easy care nature does reduce durability slightly since there is less surface area utilised as there is no secondary comfort layer on the reverse.

Delivered wrapped up in a sugar cane plastic which is 100% recyclable

Mattress depth: 33cm

33cm of depth is not in itself a good enough indicator of quality to blindly state one way or another. That said, generally speaking, deeper mattresses tend to be that way due to the excess of deep comfort layers which is typically a good thing. 33cm is right on the edge of requiring more specialist deep sheets which can be found alongside normal sheets in most stores.

10 year guarantee: 5-year warranty/5-year guarantee

A 10 year guarantee goes far beyond industry norms and gives additional confidence in the product. Industry standards typically see the mandatory minimum 1 year being the most common with 5 year being rarer and 10 years being particularly uncommon, especially since the average mattress is replaced after 7 years.

Made in the UK

These are made and manufactured in the UK, meaning that they all meet the same exceptional quality and durability that we expect from genuine UK manufacturing.

Luxury wool, typically found in mattresses in a shredded and felted capacity is an upholstery fibre often used as a top comfort layer, but sometimes found further down in those mattress layers as part of the support structure

A cotton mattress cover of fairly good quality and often preferable to damask covers and weaved covers. Your preference will vary though.

Pocket springs

Pocket springs are like natures own springy piece of comfort, except they are not from nature. Alas, pocket springs are a very good part of a mattress and often found in the more premium models. Lower quality products will frequently use open coil spring setups, where pocket springs house each spring in a tiny pocket for additional stability and continued support. Pocket spring typically lasts longer than open coil due to this.

Reinforced mattress edge

One of the most common complaints in the industry is against mattresses with a weak mattress edge. It can often result in the user feeling like they are going to fall off the side of the bed and bed avoided. This mattress has a reinforced edge, something that helps ensure that particular scenario is avoided when you get close to a mattress edge while sleeping.

Knitted Cover

It is common in the industry to have a knitted cover, these covers can come in a variety of patterns but are typically hard wearing and do not present problems for consumers.

Single sided means only one side is comfy. Positives are you only need to rotate the mattress occassionaly rather than the more cumbersome rotate and flip. Downside is the lifespan of the product may suffer as a result, only marginal, but worth mentioning.

Includes turning handles

Oh turning handles are pointless I hear you say. Just try flipping and turning this product without handles. It can be a pain. Remember that mattresses should be both rotated and flipped frequently, not a problem if you are opting for a sinle, but those doubles and kings can get heavy. Handles are very good.

Medium to Firm

Firmer than the average mattress, a medium to firm mattress is ideally suited to those that are looking for extra back support but still require and amount of comfort from their mattress. Ideally suited for a large range of the populus and becoming much more common, deviating away from the previous medium-for-everyone model.

33cm deep

A mattress with a depth of 33 cm is generally good for providing proper support for your body, as well as providing comfort. This is a somewhat generalisation, however, the deeper a mattress is, the more room for good quality fillings. This depth is just on the limit of what a standard sheet will support and you may find deeper sheets are a necessity.

10 Year Warranty

A mattress warranty covers physical defects in a mattress, such as sagging over a certain threshold when not in use. Most mattress warranties last between 5-20 years, but as it is recommended to replace your mattress every 7-10 years this warranty will cover the life of your mattress.

Handcrafted in the UK

Handcrafted in the UK means that the product is built here, by people being paid a fair and honest wage using certified and safe products of good quality and construction. UK manufacturing is some of th best in the world and all of that is reflected in this product

Approved by the National Bed Federation

The NBF is one of the most prestigious awarding federations in the industry, helped slightly by the fact that it is one of the only, however, it is still a great source of comfort knowing that this product holds approval by the team
