Why our sleep experts loved it
The Pearl Ortho Mattress from Sealy is a fairly well established and well reviewed product that is ideal for those looking for orthopaedic support from a firm and well-rounded mattress.
I got my hands on this one in person and the first thing that struck me was how 'proper' it feels, it's got that traditional, no-nonsense Sealy vibe where you can tell straight away it's built to be supportive rather than sinky.
The mattress features Sealy's unique PostureTech Zero Deflection Springs which give a firm feel due to their unique construction which offers all the support you need.
When I pressed down through the top layers with my palm, it pushed back quickly and evenly, and lying on my back I felt my hips held up rather than dropping in, which is exactly what a lot of people want from an ortho style mattress.
The Sealy Posturepedic Pearl Ortho Mattress is ideally suited to those that are looking for more support, especially if you have a larger BMI than average, or, have neck/back pain.
That said, if you're a lighter side sleeper, this level of firmness can feel a bit unforgiving around the shoulder and hip, I could feel the pressure building after a few minutes on my side and I'd personally want a touch more give up top.
Further to the support offered, there's additional features with this mattress, like the reinforced edge guard that prevents both roll-off and roll-together, allowing you to use the entire space of the mattress.
Sitting right on the edge, it held up better than I expected for an ortho mattress, but you do still get a bit of compression when you're perched there, it's supportive, just not rock solid like some foam boxed edges.
The comfort layer of the product features plush layers of padding finished in a soft and durable Tencel fibre which offers great breathability and temperature regulation.
Running my hand across the cover it felt smooth and cool to the touch, but don't expect a proper 'hug' from the comfort layer, it's more of a thin cushioning over a firm core, and if you like that slow memory foam sink this isn't really that sort of feel.
In all, this mattress will be more than suitable for those looking for a bit of firmness from a reputable brand at a very good price point.
For me personally, it's a good pick if your priority is straight support and a flatter sleeping surface, but if you're buying it to fix aches, I'd still say try it first because firm doesn't suit everyone, and at this price I'd also like to see proper stitched handles for rotating as it feels like a mattress you'll want to turn regularly.
