Why our sleep experts loved it
I've been looking forward to getting my hands on the Silentnight Mirapocket 1000 Geltex Pillow Top, mainly because Geltex and a pillow top can be a really nice combo when it's done right. It's a medium firmness mattress and, from my quick lie down, it sits in that proper 'middle of the road' feel rather than leaning firm. On my back my hips felt nicely held up by the Mirapocket springs, and when I rolled onto my side I could feel the pillow top taking the edge off around my shoulder.
When I pressed into the surface with my hand, the Geltex layer had a springy, slightly buoyant feel, not that slow sink you get with classic memory foam. You do get a bit of bounce from the Mirapocket springs, which I like, but it also means it won't isolate movement as well as some of the deeper foam, more 'dead' feeling mattresses. The pillow top does add a noticeable bit of plushness, but if you're a lighter side sleeper (say under about 70kg) you might still find the medium tension a touch too firm at the shoulder over a full night.
The knitted cover feels soft and fairly premium to the touch, and it gives the top a nicer finish than the standard flat covers you see on cheaper models. It's been approved by Allergy UK, so it is hypoallergenic and suitable for those with allergies, which is a big plus if you're sensitive. It is also very easy to lift thanks to the strong turning handles, although do bear in mind handles are for rotating, not actually carrying the full weight of the mattress. For the price, I'd like to see a longer guarantee than 5 years, as plenty of rivals push 8-10 at this sort of level.
For me personally, this one lands in the good bracket because it feels supportive without being board-like, and the pillow top makes it more forgiving than a standard Mirapocket build. Just go in knowing it's not the best choice if you need really strong motion isolation, and if you love a super-soft, sink-in top layer, this isn't quite that.
