Why our sleep experts loved it
I've been looking forward to getting my hands on the Sleepeezee Backcare Luxury 1400 because on paper it's aimed at proper back support, not just a bit of marketing fluff. I had a good poke and prod of it in person, and straight away it felt like one of those mattresses that wants to keep you level rather than let you sink in and twist.
This is an orthopaedic-style mattress aimed at helping you wake up without that niggly back ache. It's built to be supportive, with a pocket spring support layer and a wool and silk comfort layer to take the edge off the firmness.
Running my hand across the surface, it has that more traditional, natural-fibre feel rather than a squidgy memory foam vibe, and when I pressed down you can feel the pocket springs pushing back individually. That said, if you're a lighter side sleeper, this sort of orthopaedic tension can feel a bit unforgiving around the shoulder, it's not the softest welcome.
The Orthopaedic support is tailored toward protecting your spine, because a good night's sleep is not just about feeling rested, it's about being healthy too.
When I lay on my back, my hips stayed nicely in line and I didn't get that hammock feeling you can get on softer builds. On my side I got support, but I personally wanted a touch more give from the comfort layer, the wool and silk are lovely but they don't have the same deep pressure relief as a thicker foam top. If you share a bed, the pocket springs do a decent job of keeping movement to your side, but it's still a fairly 'on top' feel rather than a sink-in one.
The 1400 pocket spring unit is designed to give strong orthopaedic support for the lower back, while still offering a bit of pressure relief and comfort.
The Sleepeezee Backcare Luxury 1400 Pocket Mattress is a high quality pocket sprung mattress which features air vents to allow air flow for a cool, fresh sleeping environment.
I like the idea of the air vents and, in use, it does feel less stuffy than a lot of foam-heavy mattresses, but don't expect it to feel cold, it's still got natural fibres in there. For me personally, this sits in the 'great if you want firmer, straighter support' bracket, but if you're after a plush, cushioned top or you tend to get sore shoulders on firmer beds, I'd be looking at something with a deeper comfort layer.
