Welcome to my latest mattress review! Today, we're taking a closer look at the Dreams Workshop Billingham Traditional Spring Mattress, a particularly interesting offering from a UK-based mattress maker. As part of my job, I had the opportunity to inspect and analyse this product in-store, rigorously testing for comfort, design, and features. Let's see how it measures up!
Design And Features
The Billingham mattress, much like its contemporaries, comes with some intriguing features. Boasting a firm comfort grade, this mattress claims to offer exceptional support. This is achieved by its traditional open spring design, combined with a layer of pressure-relieving memory foam. The foam layer aims to cushion your joints for a better night's rest.
Opting for tried-and-true open springs, this mattress uses hourglass-shaped springs that uniformly distribute body weight for maximum support. This technique is as old as they come, reflecting an adherence to traditional design principles which often resonate well with the purist crowd. The layer of memory foam adds depth to this traditional design, providing a sense of comfort and contouring that modern customers demand.
Completing the package is a soft-touch damask cover that adds a sense of luxury and durability to the mattress. To ensure that the memory foam and spring structure remains intact, the mattress surface is tufted traditionally-holding the fillings in place and promising extra lifespan. However, the Billingham is a single-sided mattress and requires regular rotation to maintain its comfort level.

Comfort Level
Now, comfort is a big factor when it comes to a mattress. In my opinion, the Billingham Traditional Spring Mattress could be a hit or miss on this front, depending on your preference. While the firm tension is ideal for back sleepers and some stomach sleepers, I have a sneaking suspicion that side sleepers and those with hourglass figures may find it lacking. This mattress might be too firm for side sleepers who need that extra sinkage for proper hip and shoulder accommodation. That said, if you're a back sleeper, the firm comfort grade could indeed be the dream mattress you've been waiting for.
Suitability
This mattress, with its firm comfort grade, offers excellent support for those who prefer sleeping on their backs. It's also a suitable option for stomach sleepers who prefer a more rigid surface to sleep on. However, side sleepers and people with hourglass figures may find discomfort due to the tension. The mattress might not offer the necessary sinkage for their hips and shoulders, leading to difficulties in achieving a good night's sleep.
Customer Insights
Customer reviews largely mirror my own observations. The firm mattress, combined with the softness of the memory foam, was well-received by many, as they found relief from their aches and pains. Some reviewers appreciated the lightness of the mattress, which makes it easier for physically challenged individuals to move or flip it. Others praised it for its soft damask cover and the stylish aesthetic it brings to the sleeping space. However, some noted that the initial firmness was an issue, particularly for side sleepers.
The Verdict
While I respect the traditional spring design and many of its customers seem to appreciate the comfort of Billingham's mattress, I must maintain my personal scepticism. As a reviewer, I prefer pocket springs to open springs. Although traditional spring designs might appeal to those on a budget, my consultation and in-store experience leave me advocating for a slightly larger expense for a potentially greater return in comfort and overall satisfaction.
To sum up the Dreams Workshop Billingham Traditional Spring Mattress, I find it to be an affordable option with a mix of traditional build and modern materials. It's incredibly suitable for back and stomach sleepers. However, due to its firmness, side sleepers may want to consider other options. Despite its lower price point, the use of more modern materials like pocket springs may offset its economic appeal. Like always, do your research and make an informed decision based on individual sleeping patterns and preferences, beyond simply the price or the brand.
Remember, my research and testing was conducted in the retail environment, not in the context of daily, at-home use. The comfort and support provided by any mattress can vary vastly when we move from a quick trial in a store to consistent usage in our homes. As a reviewer and as a passionate individual in the mattress industry, I encourage you always to try before deciding and purchase a mattress that best suits your sleeping habits and comfort needs.
