Why our sleep experts loved it
I tried the Village Luxury 4850 Mattress in store in the firm tension. My main reaction was that it feels like a slightly backwards step: decent workmanship, an interesting zoned support system, then a spring count that reads stronger on the ticket than it feels under body weight.
The headline figure is 1000 pocket springs plus 5000 micro springs in king size. I did not feel those smaller springs doing enough to justify the drama around them. The support came across as led by the main pocket unit, with the micro layer adding only a faint surface effect. The seven-zone system was the better idea by some distance.
Construction and shop-floor feel
This is a 33 cm deep, single-sided mattress with English cotton, Hampshire wool, silk and cashmere in the fillings. It looks and feels properly finished in the showroom, with two rows of hand side stitching and a double steel-framed edge support system. The edge felt stable when I sat near the side, although I would still test the exact size you plan to buy because display beds can sit differently from home bases.
Depth is a practical issue here. A standard fitted sheet may be a nuisance, so I would plan for extra-deep bedding from day one. The king weighs 54 kg, and the five handles are useful for rotating, yet they do not make it light. A practical nuisance, that. The care instructions say to air it for 4 hours and allow at least 4 hours for the springs to settle, so this is not a mattress I would unwrap late at night and expect to use immediately.
The Smooth-Tech fabric felt smooth to the hand, but a showroom lie-down cannot prove overnight temperature control. Natural fillings can breathe well, though I would want a warm night at home before giving the cooling claim much credit. Furniture Village also specifies that slatted bed gaps must be no wider than 7.5 cm, or excess dipping may affect the guarantee position. That condition is worth taking seriously.
Firm comfort and the zoned support
The firm tension pushes back quickly. On my back, it held the pelvis well and gave a steady, flat feel through the middle of the body. The seven unique zones were easy to detect: move from shoulder to hip and the resistance changes under you. That is the best part of the mattress, and it worked more clearly than the micro-spring story.
Around the hips, the zoning made sense. Around the shoulder, the firm version felt less kind. Side sleepers who need pressure relief may find it too resistant, particularly through the upper body. The mattress does not have the slow moulding feel of a Tempur, and it is not a soft, cushioned pillow-top. It keeps the body lifted, sometimes at the cost of comfort.
I could not judge long-term settlement from a shop test. That matters because the brand’s own care notes say indentations from fillings and body weight are normal. Regular rotation is therefore part of ownership, not a nice extra. The single-sided build removes flipping from the routine, but all wear still happens from one sleeping face.
Who should consider it
Back sleepers are the safest match for the firm version. Stomach sleepers may also get on with it, as the surface keeps the midsection from dropping too far. Anyone who spends the whole night on their back and dislikes a sagging mattress should at least try it.
Side sleepers need caution. Hourglass figures usually need more give at the shoulder and hip, and this model did not offer enough sink in firm tension during my testing. The medium version may be the more sensible place to start for mixed sleepers. Couples should also try it together, as the zoned sections may feel different under two body weights.
Buying judgement
The Village Luxury 4850 is good quality, just a little overpriced for what I felt in store. At this sort of spend, I would also lie on the Hypnos Wool Origins before choosing, as that range tends to feel more naturally premium without leaning so heavily on a big micro-spring number.
I would buy this only for a back sleeper who likes firm support and is prepared to rotate it properly. The zoned support deserves credit. The 5000 micro springs would not be the reason I paid the money.
