Why our sleep experts loved it
The Village Luxury 6850 Mattress left me with a fairly mixed impression in store. The comfort is better than the name suggests, but the naming is also the first irritation: the stated king size build is 1,000 pocket springs plus 5,000 micro springs, so the obvious count is 6,000. Calling it 6850 feels needlessly muddy.
I tested it in person in a Furniture Village showroom for around 20 minutes, mainly in the medium tension, with some time checking the firmer feel as well. That is enough to judge initial sink, edge feel and surface comfort. It is not enough to prove how the fillings settle after a few months at home.
Build, spring count and finish
The basic construction is respectable, although I would not call it exceptional for a luxury-priced mattress. The 1,000 pocket spring support layer is the baseline I expect at this level. It is not poor. It just is not the impressive part of the specification.
The 5,000 micro springs add cushioning and a bit of surface movement, yet shoppers should keep their expectations in check. Micro spring counts can sound dramatic on a label because they are often stacked in layers. In practice, they do not transform the mattress in the same way as a stronger main spring unit would. Odd choice of headline.
The mattress is deep at 34 cm, and it feels it. I could not feel the spring unit underneath me, even when sitting nearer the edge. The double steel-framed edge support also does a decent job of keeping the usable sleep area wide, although the border did not feel as taut as I have found on some Harrison Spinks models.
The natural filling mix of English cotton, Hampshire wool, silk and cashmere gives the surface a dense, traditional feel. The Smooth-Tech fabric label sounds like showroom language to me, but the cover did feel smooth under a hand. The 2 rows of hand side stitching and 5 handles are practical details, given the king weighs 63 kg. You will want those handles when rotating it.
Comfort on the showroom bed
The medium version was the better surprise. It allowed my hips and shoulders to settle without collapsing through the top layers, and on my back it kept me reasonably level. No obvious hammock effect. That said, I would not put someone with clear orthopaedic needs on it without a proper trial, as the support is comfortable in a general sense, not clinically precise.
Breathability seemed good during my showroom test. I lay on it for about 20 minutes and did not start to feel warm, helped by the wool and cotton near the surface. A hot August night would be a different test, so I would be cautious about treating the cooling claim as proven from a shop floor lie-down.
The internal tufting gives the mattress a slightly firmer, held-together feel than many pillow-top styles. I prefer that on a mattress of this depth because it reduces the sense of floating on loose padding. It also means the surface may feel a touch formal to anyone used to a softer bed-in-a-box such as the Emma Hybrid Premium.
Who it should suit
The firm tension is the one I would steer towards back sleepers and some stomach sleepers. It holds the body higher and should stop the pelvis dipping too far, provided body weight and frame support are sensible.
Side sleepers need to be more careful. People with pronounced hips or an hourglass shape are likely to want extra sinkage at the shoulder and hip, and the firm model may push back too much. The medium is the safer showroom pick for mixed sleeping positions, though it still has a traditional, tufted character rather than a plush hotel feel.
Slatted bases need attention as well. Furniture Village states a maximum 7.5 cm gap between slats, with wider gaps risking dipping and guarantee issues. Worth checking before delivery, because a 76 kg super king is not something you want to manoeuvre twice.
My verdict after testing
I would buy this only with my eyes open. The spring-count marketing is too flattering, and the main support unit is merely acceptable for the category. Still, the surface comfort, depth and 20-year guarantee rescue it from being a style-over-substance showroom mattress.
At full ticket I would cross-shop the Hypnos Wool Origins range before committing, as Hypnos often gives a more convincing traditional feel for similar buyers. In a strong sale, the Village Luxury 6850 becomes much easier to justify. I would choose medium for most couples, firm only for committed back sleepers.
