Testing Team Takeaways

To test the Bespoke Crystal Mattress we have people from our testing team take a closer look at the mattress and form their own opinions. Below is their observations.

I tried the Hypnos Bespoke Crystal in the showroom and, as an average-weight combination sleeper, I found it immediately firm, controlled and a bit unforgiving when I rolled onto my side. On my back it made far more sense, with the ReActivePro pocket springs keeping my hips lifted and the wool layers adding enough depth that I never felt the springs beneath me. The natural wool, cotton ticking and latex give it a reassuringly premium, breathable feel, but this is not a mattress that offers much shoulder give or plush contouring. I’d steer most people toward the firm tension rather than extra firm, especially if they change positions like I do or need any meaningful pressure relief.

Why our sleep experts loved it

I tested the Hypnos Bespoke Crystal in store, and my reaction was immediate: very firm, very controlled, slightly too severe for my own taste. The support is the point here. Anyone expecting a soft shoulder cradle or much surface give may be disappointed, because the mattress holds its shape with little visible flex.

There is quality in the feel, though. The comfort layers sit deep enough that I could not feel the pocket springs underneath, and that matters with a mattress sold in firm and extra firm tensions. A hard mattress with thin padding feels cheap. This one feels dense and deliberate. Still stern. Still not my ideal side-sleeping feel.

Construction and showroom details

The Crystal is a 30 cm deep pocket-sprung mattress made in the UK by Hypnos for Furniture Village. In king size it uses 1,800 ReActivePro 9-turn pocket springs, with Red Tractor-assured wool, latex and polycotton in the upper layers. The cover is an unbleached cotton ticking with fire-resistant protection that is described as chemical-free.

The wool was the best part under my hand and body weight. It gives the top a thick, insulated feel, so the spring unit never comes across as exposed. The latex is harder to separate in a quick showroom lie-down, because the whole mattress presents as one firm slab of support rather than a noticeably cushioned top layer.

Hypnos has also kept the traditional build cues: hand tufting, hand-cut and hand-assembled materials, plus 3 rows of hand side-stitching around the border. The Royal Warrant is a nice detail, especially given Hypnos has held one for over 95 years, although I would treat that as background reassurance. The bed still has to suit your body.

Weight is worth taking seriously. The single is 34 kg, small double 45 kg, double 51 kg, king 59 kg and super king 71 kg. This is a turnable mattress, so care will take effort. The guidance also says to air it for 4 hours before use, allow at least 4 hours for the springs to settle, rotate it regularly and use a protector. On a slatted frame, gaps must be no wider than 7.5 cm. Wider spacing can cause dipping and may affect the guarantee. Practical, unglamorous stuff. Easy to overlook in a showroom.

Feel and comfort on the bed

On my back, the Crystal made sense straight away. My hips stayed lifted, and the centre of the mattress felt steady under load. There was no sagging sensation, no loose wobble through the spring unit. People who want extra back support will probably understand the appeal within a minute.

Side sleeping changed the story for me. My shoulder did not sink very far, and the hip area felt held up before it had much chance to settle. That will please buyers who hate softness. For me, it made contouring difficult. I would avoid the extra firm tension unless you already know that very hard beds suit you.

Beside a Simba Hybrid Pro, the Crystal feels far stricter and much more traditional in its response. The Simba gives a foam-led hug; this Hypnos stays flatter, with a braced feel through the whole surface. Buyers moving from a modern boxed hybrid should try it in person before ordering, because the change in feel is not subtle.

The cooling claims need caution. Wool and cotton are sensible materials for breathability, and latex can help airflow, yet a showroom test cannot recreate a warm August night under a duvet. I also could not judge partner disturbance properly without sleeping on it overnight, although the surface did stay composed when I shifted position.

Who should consider it

Back sleepers are the main audience. Heavier sleepers who find medium mattresses dipping too quickly may also get on well with it, because the Crystal resists compression through the middle. The firm version already feels very supportive, so the extra firm option is a specialist choice in my view.

Lighter side sleepers should be wary. The mattress has depth and good materials, yet pressure relief depends on the body being able to settle into the surface. I did not get enough of that in store. Fillings can bed in with use, and the brand notes that settlement indentations are normal, but I would not expect a dramatic softening.

Size coverage is broad: single, small double, double, king and super king are listed, with bespoke sizes available by phone. King and super king can also be ordered with different tensions on each side, a useful option where one person wants firm support and the other wants extra firm. Bold choice for the extra firm sleeper, mind you.

Verdict from the showroom test

The Bespoke Crystal is excellent value if your priority is strong back support with deep natural fillings and a proper pocket-sprung core. I would buy the firm tension only. The extra firm version feels like a step too far for many homes, and side sleepers wanting a softer shoulder drop should look at a different Hypnos model before committing.

Suitability

*Assuming average weight, suitability will vary dependant on body type, use the quiz above for a more tailored guide.
  • Back Sleepers
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • The amount of support offered from a mattress will vary depending on the firmness of the tension and the type of support layer used. Based on a person of average build.
  • Side Sleepers
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • If you sleep on your side you typically need a supportive tension that is not too firm, nor too soft. This is because your hips and shoulders need adequate sinkage.
  • Stomach Sleepers
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Stomach sleepers need a reasonable amount of tension in the base support layer to adequately offer body contouring and help prevent aches and pains. Results will vary based on your build.
