Testing Team Takeaways

To test the Bespoke Pearl Pillowtop Mattress we have people from our testing team take a closer look at the mattress and form their own opinions. Below is their observations.

As an average-weight combi sleeper, I found the Bespoke Pearl Pillowtop impressively composed during my showroom try-out, with the firm tension giving me the best balance as I moved between back, side and front positions. The 1,600 ReActivePro 9-turn pocket springs did the real work, keeping my hips level while the pillow top added that plush, polished comfort without feeling sloppy. I liked the traditional Hypnos build too, especially the wool, cotton, hemp and flax blend, though I’d want a proper home test before trusting the cooling claims or long-term pillow-top durability. My main caveats are practical ones: it’s a deep 32 cm mattress, needs careful rotation, and normal body impressions are expected, but the initial support and luxury feel are genuinely strong.

Why our sleep experts loved it

I loved the Bespoke Pearl Pillowtop in the showroom, and I do not say that lightly about pillow-top mattresses. They can win you over in the first five minutes, then look tired after a few years. Here, the core support felt serious from the first lie-down. The king size uses 1,600 ReActivePro 9-turn pocket springs, and that tall spring action gives the mattress a composed, body-following feel without the saggy hotel-bed softness I was half expecting.

There is one immediate practical point: 32 cm is deep. Deep fitted sheets are very likely needed, and a lower bed frame may suddenly look quite imposing with this on top. The weights are worth noting too: single 30 kg, small double 40 kg, double 45 kg, king 52 kg, super king 63 kg. No-turn helps, since flipping the larger sizes would be a chore, though regular rotation still matters.

How it is put together

The Pearl has the sort of finish Hypnos does well. Hand-tufting, three rows of hand side-stitching and a fire-resistant unbleached cotton ticking give it a proper traditional mattress feel. This is made in the UK for Furniture Village, with standard sizes from single to super king and bespoke sizing available by phone. The medium and firm tensions are useful, and king or super king buyers can choose a split feel across the bed.

The filling mix is substantial: Solotex, Red Tractor-assured wool, dual-density layers, polycotton, cotton, hemp and flax. That reads far better than a basic foam stack. I still would not take the cooling language as proven from a shop visit. Wool and plant fibres have a sensible case for breathability, yet a humid August night would be the real test. Showroom air conditioning flatters many mattresses.

Base compatibility needs attention. On a slatted frame, the gap must be no wider than 7.5 cm. Wider spacing can lead to excess dipping and may affect the guarantee. Small print, big consequence.

Feel on the bed

The support is excellent. My shoulders settled in, my hips stayed level, and the middle of my back did not feel abandoned. Different rhythm from many pillow tops. The comfort layer gives polish; the springs do the heavy lifting.

I tried both sitting and lying positions, and the surface recovered neatly when I moved. The firm tension would be my own pick, since it keeps the luxury feel without letting the topper dominate. The medium gives a softer first impression and will sell well in a showroom. I am wary of that exact appeal, because pillow tops often compress where the sleeper spends most of the night.

Next to the Simba Hybrid Pro, the Pearl feels calmer and far more traditional in character. The Simba has that boxed hybrid, foam-led response. This Hypnos feels like an old-school pocket-sprung mattress with a plush crown added on top.

Who should try it

Back sleepers get the best version of this mattress. The spring unit holds the body cleanly, and the pillow top adds comfort without turning the whole thing floppy. Side sleepers should also try it, particularly in medium, as the upper cushioning takes pressure off the shoulder well in store.

Front sleepers need to be stricter. The firm model is the one to test first, since any settling in the pillow top could let the pelvis drop a little over time. Couples should shortlist it too, as the pocket springs isolate movement fairly well during a showroom test. A full week at home would tell me far more about partner disturbance, especially with two restless sleepers.

Care is not optional here. The guidance says to air it for 4 hours before use, allow at least 4 hours for the springs to settle, use a mattress protector and rotate regularly. Hypnos also states that indentations from fillings or body weight are normal and are not classed as defects. That matters with this design. The 20-year guarantee is reassuring, though it should not be read as protection against every visible body mark.

My in-store verdict

This is one of the few pillow-top mattresses I would seriously consider buying. The spring quality makes the difference; it feels supportive in a way padding alone cannot fake. My hesitation sits with the sewn-in pillow top, because you cannot simply replace it like a separate topper if it softens unevenly later.

I would choose firm, pair it with a suitable base, and rotate it from the first month. The Sleepeezee Jessica range has a softer, showier feel to my body; the Pearl feels better disciplined. Expensive mattress, demanding care, very impressive sit. Worth a proper lie-down.

Suitability

*Assuming average weight, suitability will vary dependant on body type, use the quiz above for a more tailored guide.
  • Back Sleepers
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • The amount of support offered from a mattress will vary depending on the firmness of the tension and the type of support layer used. Based on a person of average build.
  • Side Sleepers
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • If you sleep on your side you typically need a supportive tension that is not too firm, nor too soft. This is because your hips and shoulders need adequate sinkage.
  • Stomach Sleepers
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Stomach sleepers need a reasonable amount of tension in the base support layer to adequately offer body contouring and help prevent aches and pains. Results will vary based on your build.

Performance

  • Breathability
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Mattresses that feature breathable materials help promote airflow and keep you cool making for a more hygienic night's sleep.
  • Turning on mattress
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Certain materials like memory foam can make it difficult to move about on the mattress while you toss and turn. Same too for pillow tops which can create a cloud like sensation which can make manoeuvrability challenging.
  • Stability
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Depending on the type of support layer in place can have an impact on stability, edge to edge support and roll together prevention. Pocket springs of a firmer tension will have better stability than open coil soft tension, for example.
