The TEMPUR Pro Plus SmartCool Medium Mattress is good foam, and most of what you pay for is the name. It's 25cm of TEMPUR's slow, deep-sinking memory foam, and only a true foam lover should buy it at this price. Hot sleepers should avoid it whatever the SmartCool cover promises, and so should anyone who likes to move about or sit up in bed.
Deep, slow sink for people who already love it
This is all foam: layers of TEMPUR material, graded medium, with no springs. Furniture Village warns that it's temperature-sensitive, so it feels firmer at first and reaches its proper feel with use. TEMPUR foam does exactly that: it softens as it warms under you, then lets you sink. Expect the first week to feel firmer than you'd guess. Owners describe a hug, and one puts it more frankly: "It sucks you in so you can't get out of bed."
That suits someone who sleeps still, and a side sleeper who wants the shoulder to go in. It suits a combination sleeper badly, because every turn means climbing out of the dent you've just made, and it's a struggle for anyone up and down in the night.
It does come in more sizes than most, from a long small single to a small emperor, with long versions of the single and double and a continental king, so an awkward antique frame or a very tall sleeper is easy to fit. Measure the frame before you order, not after the van has been.
SmartCool cools the cover while the foam underneath holds your heat
SmartCool is TEMPUR's cooling treatment on the QuickRefresh cover, which unzips all the way round to wash. A cool-to-the-touch cover feels lovely when you get in. Then your heat works into the foam, it softens and folds round you, and the cover ends up on top of a warm, wrapped-up body. I'm not convinced a fabric changes that, and if you overheat, the cover won't rescue you. Buy it for the sink, then, and never for the cooling.
TEMPUR also calls this its best-ever pressure relief. That comes from TEMPUR's own internal tests, comparing one TEMPUR material with another, so it tells you the new foam beat the old one and nothing about anyone else's mattress. TEMPUR trades on its heritage and charges for it, and claims like that one are part of how.
The hug wins most owners over, though a couple can't keep a sheet on it
Owners mostly love it, and the word they reach for is hug. The complaints are still worth knowing. A couple say it started out firm, and one added a topper two weeks in. That matches Furniture Village's own note about the foam softening with use, so let a few weeks pass before judging it.
A couple say their fitted sheets won't stay on, even the deep ones. I change mine every Sunday without fail, and I'd be livid. One owner found it soft and sinking on their side and had it collected. Furniture Village gives you a sleep trial on it, as an exchange, so there is a way out if the feel is wrong.
What to buy instead
The same range is sold at Bensons as the Tempur Pro Plus SmartCool, in Soft to Firm at 25cm, so price the medium in your size there before you buy it here. If you want TEMPUR's foam without the Pro price, the TEMPUR Ease 20 at Mattress Online is the cheaper way in, at 20cm. And a hot sleeper shouldn't be on 25cm of memory foam from any maker.
