I used to be dismissive of TEMPUR. Then I spent longer on one of the softer versions and changed my mind, because nothing else feels like it. This one wrapped round my shoulder on my side and cradled me just as well on my back, and my front was comfortable too. Turning over is slower work, since the material takes a moment to let you go.

Average-weight side sleepers and anyone wanting the plushest TEMPUR will love it, and so will couples, because one of you turning over won't disturb the other at all. If you're a sceptic, lie on this before you write the brand off, and buy it one tension softer than you'd normally choose. Still, the TEMPUR Pro Plus SmartCool does most of what this does, for less.

It's top-tier TEMPUR: the deepest layer of TEMPUR Adapt material in the range, under the Advanced material and a cool-to-the-touch SmartCool cover that zips off to wash, 30cm in all. That extra depth is a worthwhile upgrade.

How I Tested

I tested the Tempur Pro Luxe Smartcool Mattress extensively in-store, spending quality time evaluating its performance, comfort and technology, and this review rests on that time on the shop floor and my general impressions of the mattress.

Mattress Comfort

One of the standout features of the Tempur Pro Luxe Smartcool Mattress was the way it holds you. This is TEMPUR at its plushest: lie on your side and it wraps round your shoulder, and it cradles you just as well on your back. The fabric of the top layer felt cool to the touch, a promise of how it could help you avoid overheating on those warm nights.

Suitability

The Tempur Pro Luxe Smartcool Mattress is suitable for both back sleepers and side sleepers, with its medium tension catering well to each group. It wraps round a side sleeper's shoulder, which matters most for their posture. Any average-weight person should find comfort in this support layer, regardless of their sleeping position. Back sleepers do just as well on it, and so do front sleepers, and couples get a bed where one of you turning over won't disturb the other.

What Customers Thought

The mattress does an excellent job providing support and a high comfort level, whilst the cover stays cool to the touch. Its higher price point may not be within everyone's budget, but the all-round quality and range of firmness options mean it represents a great investment for your sleep quality. On a personal note, the TEMPUR Pro Plus SmartCool does most of what this does for less, so an everyday buyer should lie on both.

Given the range of firmness options, I felt the medium option was the sweet spot for most sleepers, with an excellent blend of comfort and support.

All in all, the impressive construction, thorough attention to detail, and the overall feel of the mattress mean that despite the high cost, the Tempur Pro Luxe Smartcool Mattress will be a lovely addition to your bedroom, offering a night's sleep that's supremely comfortable.

Basically you get what you pay for, the mattress is made with the best quality materials, and is a solid construction, its weight was a surprise but proves it is a superior sleep system, it takes at least a week for you to adapt to it's movement and support of your body but even if you move a lot, it quickly moulds to your new sleeping position, I was worried about being hot in bed but even now in June with my bedroom temperature at 23-24degrees I haven't felt uncomfortable I'm sure now with the Tempur smart cool technology, memory foam has come a long way. I was a little disappointed when I asked about a couple of the Tempur smart cool pillows that complimented the mattress in store being included, as a rival store were including those and a discount on the mattress we decided on, but we were only offered a 10% discount so due to this I would highly recommend the mattress we purchased but to compare the prices on such a high cost item.

The bed is superbly comfortable. Can't wait to get into it at night since I am guaranteed a great night's sleep. It looks and feels fantastic and was everything I expected. The best part was the service from Bensons - from start to finish - order to delivery - first class service! I would not hesitate to recommend the bed (Tempur Pro Luxe Smart Cool Mattress) but more importantly, you may be able to buy the bed elsewhere but purchasing from Bensons you are guaranteed the absolute best service. If I could give 10 stars, I would!

So look forward to my bedtime every night now. Tempur Pro Luxe Super King size Mattress so comfortable. One month on I don't seem to toss and turn as much as on my old mattress and definately sleep better. Five star for mattress Only problem is I bought the Tempur mattress protector at same time and find when you turn over your top sheet slips and slides and comes away from bed so have to remake bed a few times during night. Not really fit for purpose. One Star for mattress protector.

This is a fantastic mattress! The best way I can describe it is like sleeping on a beach; it feels like a bed of sand. When you shift to your side, you may need to adjust a little to get comfortable, but once you do, it's incredibly cozy. However, the price is quite high for a mattress. If I were to buy another mattress in the future, I would consider a Dunlopillo latex mattress. Latex mattresses don't conform to your body and move with you, making them a potentially better option.

We got the soft mattress but it's definitely not what we hoped it would be we are still Waking up with back aches and pains, waking up during the night also many times, we can't exchange it for any cheaper mattress as the company won't give you back the difference of the cost of the mattress, so we're stuck with the product, I will try and exchange for a harder mattress, but will Wait and see what happens !!

It's early days yet but so far this mattress is very very comfortable, we upgraded from a simba mattress that was giving both my partner and myself chronic back pain but this tempur mattress just seems to be able to give good support all over your back. Bought in Black Friday sales which made the price a bit easier to swallow but can't put a price on a good nights sleep. Took 6 weeks for delivery

I would recommend this mattress to anyone. It takes a little getting used to but if you suffer from joint pains it really gives you the support you need. I find the only downside, if you can call it that , is, if you move around a lot in bed it's not as easy as other mattresses! Having said that, I can honestly say that I wake up each morning without the aches and pains that I had before.

We haven't yet slept on the mattress but we are looking forward to our first night. The mattress is good quality. Monty at the middlebrook benson for beds is a credit to the Company. We orriganlly ordered the bed in April, due to continues delays from solicitors our delivery date needed to be pushed back. Monty and the team were great and really understanding.

The most luxurious mattress and worth every penny for the perfect nights sleep. Once you get used to sleeping on memory foam instead of springs you won't want to go back. Used to wake up with back ache with our old mattress, but after a matter of weeks I can't get out of bed without any pains at all. Definitely a worthwhile investment for your future health.

The mattress doesn't feel as firm as it should be. It's firm to begin with and then sinks heavily. I can only imagine the less firm mattresses being extremely uncomfortable for anyone who doesn't sleep on their back. This is comfortable compared to other lesser mattresses but it still gets hot and isn't as firm as its previous "firm" models from Tempur.

We had a 21inch Tempur mattress as we both have hip and back pain and the memory foam mattress helps reduce pain a lot during the night, but the luxe medium to firm mattess is truly fantastic and our best mattress yet. It was comfy from the very first night and has honestly exceeded our expectation with regards to comfort. Love love love it!!!!

I have had significant lower back pain for a long time. Whilst I won't pretend that a new mattress can cure it, the Tempur Pro Luxe mattress has been an absolute joy to sleep in. It has definitely helped to reduce the pressure and soreness and I wake feeling much more comfortable. I am so glad we opted for this version. I highly recommend it!

So glad I went for the firm mattress best nights sleep I have ever had before I used to toss and turn all night. I have chronic bursitis and could never get comfortable hardly slept now once I have found the right position I don't have disturbed sleep and wake fully refreshed it has also helped my back pain. The mattress is all that I hoped, as was the service I received from Rachael. However, the mattress cover I purchased from Bensons keeps sliding off. This is no doubt due to the fact I have to sleep partly in a laying position, but of course its causing me a constant problem and ruining my experience of my purchase. Can you help John

Having it only since a month. Perfect mattress, actually best mattres I ever purchased and I always hat top range mattresses. Mattress is decent, takes a bit of getting used to & the smell is overwhelming & diabolical for a week or two, but it does ease. What did annoy me was the "mattress guide" that bensons gave telling me that the shape will alter but this is normal. That should be a warning to prospective buyers bensons, not people who have already bought the bloody bed! I bought a mattress that was firm, turns out, after a day or two, its more like a medium in truth & i didn't expect that. Also, i am currently recovering from cancer so i use an electric blanket to help regulate my body heat, the purchased mattress protector CANNOT be used with an electric blanket, so that was a pointless exercise i guess. The mattress is comfortable, but so was my top of the range hypnos one, lets see if this lasts as long as that did, time will tell i guess.

I've had this mattress for just over a year and I wish I'd never wasted my money. It's definitely better than buying something that's only £100, but also definitely not worth the £2,500 I paid for it. I bought a form mattress, but it is still memory foam which means in sinks a lot with body heat rather than being supportive. If I lie on my side, it doesn't keep my spine in a nice straight line like the adverts would have you believe - my lower side is still stretched out and my upper side contracted, creating a curve in my spine. Most annoyingly, though, is my partner's dip is deeper than mine, causing the roll together affect of a cheap mattress... I just fall into his hole. I will never buy a memory foam mattress again - no matter how much you pay, they're rubbish.

Not even a year old and I'm selling it tonight for next to nothing just to get rid of it. I'm having to make my son sleep on a camping bed so I can sleep on the floor. But I feel emotional that the nightmare of this torture device will soon be over. I tried to get Bensons to help but they wouldn't, however sleeping on the floor is better than sleeping on this. I will still have 2 years to pay on finance but it wasn't worth it, the back pain this gave me was ruiningy life. I can't even get dressed in the morning or dress my kids. I'm 41 and always been fit and healthy. I would never buy a tempur again.

Totally different mattress to any that we have slept in but it seems to be working. I have been suffering with back and leg problems for many years and have had to sleep on our sofa which was better than our bed but still not 100% pain free. From the first night on our new Tempur mattress I have been pain free. Moving on the mattress is still weird but well worth it to be able to sleep without pain. Three weeks on and I am still amazed at how well I am sleeping. Personally, I would highly recommend this product for anyone who needs to support aching joints.

The support of this mattress is perfect for us. It is firm but in a way that never feels hard - the other Tempurs we tried, we felt like we were sinking, whereas this one gives the support without the feeling of being trapped. Our only criticism is that it does get very warm. Even on cooler nights, we have been waking hot in the night. You definitely don't need a high TOG duvet with this mattress, that's for sure! Overall though, if you (like us) suffer with back/hip/general joint pains then I would definitely recommend this mattress.

NASA technology? More like alien technology! This matter was should come with a warning. You'll never want to get off it. Had mine delivered today and I've fallen asleep on it about six times. I've had constant back pain for five years, but am completely pain free when I sit or lay on this in any position, it shapes itself around me and keeps doing so if I move! Never known anything like this. Worth every penny and more! Absolutely delighted

The mattress is absolutely great in that it is very supportive when we sleep, being side sleepers it keeps our spine in perfect alignment that helped with the team getting us to try the right firmness for both our needs. With the height difference between me and my partner we had different requirements and the Tempur has managed to achieve them all and would highly recommend over similar brands which it completely surpasses in ever way.

This is our first memory foam mattress, we absolutely would not go back to anything else. When you get into bed you gently sink a little into the mattress as it starts to push back just where you need support most. We've had the best few weeks sleep we've had in years. Many people in previous reviews comment on memory foam being hot, I can honestly say this has not been an issues. Don't think twice, buy this mattress.

It's a lovely comfortable mattress, warm and easy to sleep on. The only problem is the edge of the bed when trying sit on it to put socks or shoes on, it slowly collapses and you end up sliding off the bed all together. We have had to resort to putting our shoes and socks on whilst sitting on the top of the stairs. If you roll over to the very edge of the bed in the night it does the same again, Ah well!

Brought the mattress from Benson's. The mattress we received is not the same as the one we tried in the shop. Customer services sent out someone to inspect it. He said it was soft but not faulty. Customer services will exchange the mattress for a fee of 10% of the purchase price but I just want the mattress I ordered. The foam inside is not the same as the one in the shop which is much firmer.

We swapped from a waterbed to this Tempur mattress, so this new mattress had a lot to live up to. It is early days yet and we are finding that it is already very comfortable but, we don't think it has reached its full potential yet. It's just different and we need a little longer to make the adjustment, hence the 4 stars. That said, we would definitely recommend it so far.

It may seem expensive at first but when you realise how amazing they are they're worth every penny. Also they last so much longer than normal beds so over time they are no more expensive anyway. Literally comfy from the moment you get on it. No need to move around. Firm and supportive but soft at the same time. We absolutely love it and wish we'd bought one years ago!

To be fair I've always avoided benson for beds as the sales people jump on you the minute you walk in, but Kate at Whitfield shop didn't do that! She was super helpful and not at all pushy, the whole buying experience was was perfect and they delivered what I ordered on the day they said they would. So 5 stars for them and ther service

Worst bed I have ever had. Brought this and an adjustable bed. This mattress is like sinking in sand to get on the inside (middle of the bed) is like climbing up a hill. I slide out of this bed nightly. I can not recommend this bed to anybody but certainly not to an older person with arthritis. Sorry

The delivery and transaction of my new mattress were seamless, and the delivery team was superb-professional and efficient throughout. My only critique is that the mattress retains quite a bit of heat, which may be an issue for hot sleepers. Aside from that, it is extremely comfortable. Thank you!

Although tried and tested in store I found and still am finding it hard to sleep. The mattress is so solid it still has not given me any comfort at all. Like sleeping on the base. I would have contacted yourselves as it states you can return up to 30 days of purchase but it was a sale purchase

Mattress took a little bit of getting used to at the beginning. We had selected a medium feel mattress but it felt quite hard at first. After four weeks though it is the most comfortable mattress we have ever slept on. No complaints whatsoever. Fantastic night sleep every night

I was told it would take a couple of nights to get used to the bed, it has taken weeks as it is so totally different to anything ever slept in or on before. No aches or pains though, it is an amazing mattress, just don't expect the normal lying on top of a bed feel.

May not be for everyone but once you get used to the mattress after a couple of weeks it is so comfortable and supportive. Recommend the Tempura pillows as well - went with medium firm.
