Mattress Online is one of the UK’s largest independant mattress retailers who is eyeing expansion as a key requirement for moving the business forward as the firm sees turnover leap to £37.5m in the later stages of the pandemic.
The result of the above sees staff at Rotherham based retailer expand to 70 with a further 6 new hires across the company in positions ranging from forecast planning to graphic design and content.
It doesn’t stop there for the online retailer though, with further strides being made into bricks and mortar, with 10 stores on the horizon to aid expansion efforts.
Steve Adams, CEO for Mattress Online spoke of how there have been huge shifts within the industry, both caused by the pandemic but also the larger picture surrounding buying behaviour. Mr Adams goes further reflecting on Black Friday as one example, previously a day of the year that you marked in the calendar, then a weekend, then a week and now, the full month.
This behaviour, combined with up to 30 percent more people spending time at home rather than going out, creates new opportunities for retailers willing to reform key parts of their long standing strategy and one that Mattress Online is keen to undertake.
As part of this growth strategy Mattress Online have also recently updated their own branding, seeing the first major shake up in their brand and imagery in close to a decade. I’ve had a look at the new site and branding myself and it does feel cleaner and easier to follow than the old look, but I do think it’ll take a bit of time for regular customers to get used to the change.
We feature Mattress Online fairly extensively through Want Mattress and have been fortunate enough to have the opportunity to take a closer look at some of their product offering. When I’ve tested a couple of their mattresses in person, the covers felt decent under my hand and the edge support was better than I expected for the price. That said, not every model in their range is a winner for everyone, some of the firmer options can feel a bit unforgiving on the shoulder if you’re a strict side sleeper, and a few of the foam-heavy builds do sleep warmer than I’d like.
