Why You Should Avoid Sharing Beds With Your Pets

Updated: 2022-12-08

Author: Becky

When it comes to sleeping with your pet, it’s a hotly debated topic. There are those who swear it’s the best thing in the world and then there are those who are firmly against it. So, what’s the truth? Is it okay to share a bed with your pet during winter?

In this post, I’m going to discuss why it’s not a good idea to share a bed with your pet during the winter months, and how to reduce pet shedding in order to keep your home tidy. I’ll also debunk some common pet shedding myths, discuss how to prepare your home for a pet-free environment and the importance of regular grooming. Finally, I’ll provide some tips for getting your pet to sleep in their own bed, as well as what to do if you still want to share beds with your pet. So, let’s get started.

Introduction to Pet Shedding

The first thing that needs to be discussed is pet shedding. Pet shedding is a natural process that occurs when a pet loses its old fur and grows a new coat. This process is known as molting, and it happens all year round, but typically more during the winter months.

During the winter, pet shedding can become a real problem, as it can result in large amounts of fur being left behind in your home. And when you combine this with the extra moisture in the air from the cold weather, it’s a recipe for disaster. Not only can pet fur be a nuisance to clean up, but it can also be an allergen, which can cause allergic reactions in some people.

Why Is It Bad to Share a Bed With Pets During Winter?

So, why is it bad to share a bed with your pet during winter? Well, there are a few reasons. First, pet shedding can be a real issue. As I mentioned before, the winter months are when pets shed the most, so the more time you spend in bed with them, the more likely you are to be covered in their fur.

That’s why it’s not a good idea to share a bed with your pet during winter. Not only can it make your bedding uncomfortable and unhygienic, but it can also cause an increase in pet shedding throughout your home.

Help to Reduce Pet Shedding as Temperatures Drop

If you’re determined to keep your pet in the bed during winter, there are a few things you can do to help reduce the amount of pet shedding. Firstly, make sure to groom your pet regularly. Brushing and combing their fur can help to reduce the amount of hair they shed, as it removes any loose fur before it has a chance to spread around your home.

It’s also important to ensure that your pet’s bedding is clean and fresh. Vacuuming your pet’s bedding on a regular basis can help to reduce the amount of pet fur that gets left behind in your home and can encourage them to utilise their own bed, rather than yours.

Lastly, it’s a good idea to keep your pet warm during the winter months. Cold weather can cause pets to shed more than usual, so ensuring that your pet has a warm place to sleep (not your bed) can help to reduce the amount of pet fur that ends up in your home.

Common Pet Shedding Myths

Unfortunately, there are a few myths about pet shedding that often circulate. One of the most common myths is that pet shedding is only a problem during the spring and summer months. However, this is not true, as pets shed all year round, with the winter months usually being the worst.

It’s also often believed that pet shedding can be reduced by bathing your pet more often. While regular baths can help to reduce pet shedding, they are not a substitute for regular grooming and can actually worsen the problem if done too often.

How to Protect Your Home from Pet Shedding

If you’ve decided that it’s not a good idea to share a bed with your pet during winter, then the next step is to prepare your home for a pet-free environment. This means taking the time to vacuum, dust and mop your home thoroughly. You should also make sure to wash your bedding and curtains on a regular basis.

It’s also a good idea to invest in some pet-proof furniture covers. These covers are designed to prevent pet fur from getting onto your furniture and can be a great way to keep your home neat and tidy.

The Importance of Regular Grooming

Regular grooming is essential to keeping your pet’s fur healthy and preventing excessive pet shedding. Grooming should be done at least once a week and should include brushing and combing your pet’s fur. This will help to remove any loose fur and keep your pet’s coat looking sleek and shiny.

If you’re not sure how to groom your pet, it’s a good idea to take them to a professional groomer. They will be able to show you the proper techniques for grooming and can give you advice on how to keep your pet’s coat looking its best.

Benefits of Pet-Free Sleeping

Sleeping without your pet can have a number of benefits. For starters, it can help to reduce pet shedding in your home. This means that you won’t have to worry about the extra mess that comes with having pets around.

Sleeping without your pet can also help to improve your sleep quality, as pets can be disruptive during the night. Without your pet in the bed, you’ll be able to get a better night’s rest and wake up feeling refreshed.

Tips for Getting Your Pet to Sleep in Their Own Bed

If you’re determined to keep your pet out of your bed, then there are a few tips you can use to encourage them to sleep in their own bed. First, make sure that their bed is comfortable and inviting. Provide them with plenty of soft bedding and plush toys.

You should also make sure to give them plenty of attention during the day. This will help to reduce their need for nighttime cuddles and give them a feeling of security and safety.

Finally, it’s important to reward your pet for sleeping in their own bed. Whenever they do, give them a treat or a toy. This will help to reinforce the positive behaviour and encourage them to continue sleeping in their own bed.

What to Do If You Still Want to Share Beds With Your Pet

If you still want to share a bed with your pet during the winter months, there are a few things you can do to make it a more pleasant experience. Firstly, make sure to groom your pet regularly. This will help to reduce the amount of pet fur that gets left behind in your home.

It’s also a good idea to invest in some pet-proof bedding. These are designed to help keep pet fur from getting into your bedding. They can also be a great way to keep your bedding looking clean and tidy.

Finally, make sure to vacuum your bedding and furniture on a regular basis. This will help to reduce the amount of pet fur that gets left behind in your home.
