Testing Team Takeaways

To test the Bespoke Topaz Pillowtop Mattress we have people from our testing team take a closer look at the mattress and form their own opinions. Below is their observations.

In the Furniture Village showroom, I found the Bespoke Topaz Pillowtop immediately plush, with that deep wool-rich surface giving plenty of shoulder comfort when I rolled onto my side. As an average-weight combi sleeper, I’d skip the medium because my hips sank a touch too much, while the firm version kept me better aligned on my back without feeling harsh. The 1,600 ReActivePro pocket springs felt controlled, and the hand-tufted, cotton-ticked finish gives it a proper old-school luxury feel. My hesitation is value and longevity: pillowtops can settle, this one is heavy to rotate, and at full price I’d want a very strong deal before trusting it long term.

Why our sleep experts loved it

The Bespoke Topaz Pillowtop Mattress was comfortable in the Furniture Village showroom. No mystery there. A deep pillow top, a wool-heavy feel under the hand and a traditional Hypnos finish will usually make a strong first five minutes. The awkward bit is the price. This mattress asks you to trust a pillow top for the long haul, and I am stingy with that trust.

I can see why some people will fall for it. I can also see the future complaint: a once-plump top layer starting to look tired after years of use. That may be unfair to this particular model, as the filling stack feels better than the average pillowtop, though history makes me cautious.

Where the specification earns its keep

The Topaz is a 31 cm deep pocket sprung mattress using 1,600 ReActivePro™ 8-turn pocket springs in king size. In store, the spring unit felt stable and well controlled. Still, 1,600 springs is good rather than exceptional at this end of the market, so I would not let that number carry the sale on its own.

The fillings do more to justify the mattress. Solotex, Red Tractor-assured wool, polycotton and dual-density layers are used across the pillow top and main body. The wool is the impressive part. Pressing across the surface, it felt deep and plentiful, with none of that thin “natural filling” tokenism you sometimes find in mattresses chasing a luxury label.

The outer build is very Hypnos: fire-resistant and chemical-free unbleached cotton ticking, hand-tufting, plus 3 rows of hand side-stitching on the border. It looks proper. The care demands are less charming. This is a no-turn mattress, so rotation is the job, and the weights are not trivial:

  • Single: 26 kg
  • Small double: 34 kg
  • Double: 38 kg
  • King: 44 kg
  • Super king: 53 kg

That super king figure matters in a real bedroom with skirting boards and bedside tables in the way. Nice showroom handles only get you so far.

How it felt on the bed

The medium tension gives the softest, most immediately persuasive feel. Side sleepers who like cushioning at the shoulder will probably smile within seconds. I did, briefly. Then the hip area felt a little too cushioned for my taste, as though the pillow top was softening the message from the spring unit underneath.

The firm version made much better sense. The pillow top and the deep comfort layers already take the edge off, so the firmer support does not feel severe. I could still lie on my side without feeling pushed away by the mattress. On my back, the pelvis sat in a cleaner position than it did on the medium. Firm first, then medium only for confirmed softness fans.

A showroom cannot tell you how this will behave through a hot August night. Wool usually helps with moisture control, and the cover felt breathable enough under hand, yet a 31 cm pillowtop build is still a thick stack of material. I would also want years, not minutes, before trusting the surface to keep its shape. Hypnos says indentations from settlement or body weight are normal, and on this model that sentence carries real weight.

Who should try it

This suits side sleepers who want a cushioned traditional mattress, provided they accept the upkeep. Back sleepers should head straight to firm. Couples get a useful option in king and super king sizes, as those can be ordered with different feels on each side, though both people still have to like the padded top.

A flatter, taut mattress lover should walk past it. The Topaz is deliberately plush, and that character is baked into the design. Slatted bases also need checking before purchase: Hypnos says gaps must be no wider than 7.5 cm, because wider spacing can cause excess dipping and may invalidate the guarantee. That is the sort of detail buyers discover too late.

It is available in single, small double, double, king and super king, with bespoke sizes handled by phone. It is made in the UK exclusively for Furniture Village, and Hypnos has held a Royal Warrant for over 95 years. Fine credentials, though I would still compare it with the Hypnos Wool Origins before paying full money. Emma and Simba hybrids feel far more modern and compressed by comparison; the Topaz is old-school upholstery with a luxury gloss.

My buying judgement

The firm tension is the only one I would consider. The medium is pleasant in the showroom, yet it leans too heavily on the pillow top for my liking. Airing for 4 hours before use and allowing at least 4 hours for the springs to settle are easy enough; maintaining the surface over years is the larger ask.

A strong sale price changes the conversation. At full Furniture Village pricing, I would put my money into a non-pillowtop Hypnos and remove the biggest ageing risk from the equation. This one is tempting under the lights, mainly because the wool feels so abundant. Tempting is not the same as safe.

Purchased a few weeks ago now, it took about a week to get used to the firmness of it but now we have got used to it my quality of sleep has improved and the length of time I can stay asleep for has increased. I now consistently get 8 hours sleep and no longer wake up in the night or have a bad back when I do it get. It has been well worth the money. It also looks premium which is an added bonus very well made, it feels like a product that has been well thought out and the company have taken the time to ensure it is of a high standard. Delivery was excellent they were on time polite and made sure I was happy with everything before they left.

While the mattress meets the build quality we expected there are so many clauses in the 10 year warranty that give you the impression it's not worth the paper it's written on. Hopefully we won't have any issues because I have the strong feelings any claim will be rejected regardless of how the mattress has been cared for.
