Why our sleep experts loved it
The Hypnos Inspired by Nature 01 is the least fanciful mattress in the new Inspired by Nature line-up, and that is meant as praise. I tested it in a Bensons showroom rather than at home, so this is a feel-and-build assessment, not a months-long sleep trial. Even so, it gave the strongest case of the five for spending proper money without drifting into the harder-to-defend upper models.
High ticket, clearly. The case for it becomes easier once you lie on it, because the comfort layer does not feel thin or tokenistic. Three fleeces of RWS certified British wool is a serious fill, sourced through the Woolkeepers community of farmers and described as traceable, sustainable and ethically produced. That wool depth is the main reason this mattress feels like a real Hypnos rather than a spec sheet with green language attached.
Build and materials in the showroom
At 29cm deep, this is a substantial, turnable mattress. The surface is hand-tufted with British wool, so the fillings feel held under tension rather than loose and pillowy. The Hypnos signature damask cover is made from breathable viscose derived from wood pulp, with 100% natural, chemical-free fire retardancy protection. Smart finish. Quite formal too, especially beside softer boxed hybrids from Emma or Simba.
Under the cover, the comfort stack uses the three wool fleeces, a cotton-rich moisture-absorbing layer and an eOlus sustainable comfort layer sourced from recycled polymer bottles. Bensons talks heavily about landfill reduction, pollution reduction and the Eden Project endorsement. Fair enough, although the showroom evidence I cared about was simpler: the mattress felt dry, resilient and well packed, with none of the clammy foam feel that cheaper hybrids can have.
The support system is ReActivePro 6-turn pocket spring technology. Lying flat, I felt steady resistance through the lower back rather than a sudden hard ridge. The edge is better specified than most: Triple Edge Protection means 3 rows of firmer edge springs on both sides, a metal frame and traditional side stitching. There are also 2 rows of true hand side-stitching for edge-to-edge support. Sitting on the border, it did not collapse in the way many foam-led mattresses do.
Practicality is the bit buyers may underestimate. You get 8 traditional flag-stitched handles, or 4 handles on the 90cm single size, and the mattress needs both rotating and turning to refresh the fillings. That helps the durability argument. It also means effort. A deep Hypnos in a tight bedroom is not a casual Sunday flip.
Feel, firmness and heat
I tried the Firm version. Firm here means firm, with only a short cushioned layer before the springs take over. The wool softens the first contact, then the mattress holds you up quickly. Compared with the Simba Hybrid Pro, it feels less lively and less plush, more like a traditional pocket-sprung bed built for posture.
The Extra Firm option exists, but I would approach it carefully. The Firm already gives plenty of pushback. Going firmer will suit a narrower group, mainly heavier sleepers who lie on their back and dislike any dip at the hips.
The temperature claims deserve a plain reading. This mattress is breathable. It is not actively cooling in the chilled-cover sense. Wool, the cotton-rich layer and the eOlus layer should help manage humidity, and in store it did not have that heat-trapping feel I associate with dense memory foam. Sweet spot rather than cold spot.
Best match for sleeping position
Back sleepers are where this mattress earns its money. The pelvis stays lifted, the lumbar area feels supported, and the firm tension makes sense for someone who spends most of the night facing upward. Stomach sleepers may also like the lack of sag through the middle.
Side sleepers get a much less generous deal. Shoulders and hips need space to sink, particularly on curvier or hourglass body shapes, and this surface does not give much away. A short showroom lie on your side is essential before buying. Pressure can appear slowly, not in the first 30 seconds.
Customer review picture
No verified owner reviews were supplied with the information I was given, so I cannot quote a customer consensus. That gap matters more on a premium mattress than it would on a budget guest-bed buy. Long-term comments would be useful for body impressions, fabric wear, delivery experience and whether the handles stand up to repeated turning.
My showroom notes still support several of the claims. The wool content is obvious in the feel, the edge support felt credible, and the free 10-year guarantee fits the period many buyers would realistically expect before thinking about replacement. UK manufacture in Buckinghamshire by Royal Warrant holders Hypnos, exclusively for Bensons for Beds, adds reassurance. Recyclable packaging made from sugar cane and recycled plastic is a decent extra, not a reason to ignore comfort fit.
Limitations of this assessment
This was an in-store test only. I could not assess settlement after 6 months, partner disturbance across a full night, damask wear under a protector, or Bensons delivery and aftercare. I also could not judge how easy regular turning would be in a furnished bedroom with limited floor space.
Verdict from the shop floor
The Inspired by Nature 01 is expensive, yet it is the model in the range that makes the most practical sense to me. It gives you the 6-turn spring unit, three wool fleeces, Firm and Extra Firm choices, proper edge construction and a 10-year guarantee without relying on vague luxury talk. I would buy it only in Firm, and only after lying on it in your normal sleep position for longer than a polite showroom minute.
