Testing Team Takeaways

To test the Bespoke Quartz Mattress we have people from our testing team take a closer look at the mattress and form their own opinions. Below is their observations.

I tried the Hypnos Bespoke Quartz in the showroom and my first impression was that it feels exceptionally well made, but seriously firm. As an average-weight combi sleeper, I liked the level, controlled support on my back, though the lack of flex made side sleeping feel too unforgiving around my shoulder. The ReActive 7-turn pocket springs, wool layers, cotton ticking and hand-tufted finish all give it that sturdy, traditional Hypnos feel, with a breathable rather than foamy surface. I’d recommend it most to firm-bed fans and back sleepers, but if you switch positions a lot like I do, it may feel more rigid than restful.

Why our sleep experts loved it

I tried the Hypnos Bespoke Quartz Mattress in store and had a fairly blunt reaction. The build impressed me. The feel did not. It is a very firm mattress with almost no flex through the top, so my body stayed lifted rather than settling in. Good for support, awkward for contouring, and too hard for my own shoulder comfort.

The value case is stronger. Under £1,000, this is a lot of traditional Hypnos for the money, and even at normal retail pricing it does not feel silly for the materials and finish. The catch is simple: quality alone will not make a firm mattress suit you.

Construction you can actually feel

The Quartz is a 26 cm deep pocket spring mattress with 1,200 ReActive 7-turn pocket springs in king size. That count is fine, though I would not treat it as a bragging point. What mattered in the showroom was the steadiness. Pressing across the surface, I did not get the thin, rattly sensation that cheaper firm mattresses can give.

The top felt properly padded. Woolkeepers wool, polycotton and a 100% cotton ticking cover sit above the springs, and I could not feel the pocket unit underneath when pushing into the sleep surface by hand. No pillow top here. The comfort layer is taut and dry, with the wool doing the work rather than a thick foam cushion.

There is decent tailoring as well: hand-tufting, two rows of side-stitching, and the cut-and-assembled-by-hand approach Hypnos still talks about. I tend to be cautious with heritage claims, but Hypnos having held a Royal Warrant for over 95 years is at least consistent with the way this mattress is presented. It looks like a traditional British mattress, and it behaves like one.

Comfort: firm, flat, and not especially forgiving

On my back, the Quartz made the best case for itself. My hips stayed level and the surface did not collapse under me. The support felt controlled, with a planted feel through the middle of the mattress. Back sleepers who dislike sinkage will probably understand its appeal within a minute.

Side lying was a different story. My shoulder met a firm surface and stayed there. I wanted a bit of give through the upper layer, and the mattress gave very little back. That makes pressure relief the weak spot, at least from the showroom test. I would be wary of buying it blind as a side sleeper, especially with a lighter build or sharper shoulders.

Next to the Emma Hybrid, the Quartz feels much more traditional: flatter, drier, and without that foamy compression. I prefer the Hypnos as an object, because it feels sturdier and less like a bed-in-a-box product. My body would still ask for a kinder surface after a full night.

I could not prove the temperature claim in store. Wool and cotton should breathe well, and the surface did not feel clammy during testing, but a warm August night is the proper test. The other unknown is how the fillings settle after use. Hypnos states that indentations from body weight are normal, so expect some bedding-in rather than a permanently showroom-flat top.

Practical fit and ownership notes

The size range covers single, small double, double, king and super king, with bespoke sizes available through Furniture Village. It is made in the UK exclusively for them. The weights matter: single 20 kg, small double 27 kg, double 30 kg, king 35 kg and super king 42 kg. A proper lump in the bigger sizes.

  • It needs turning, not just rotating, so factor in the effort.
  • Air it for 4 hours before use to clear any odour.
  • Allow at least 4 hours for the springs to settle and the mattress to reach full size.
  • Use a mattress protector and rotate it regularly.
  • On a slatted base, gaps must be no wider than 7.5 cm, or excess dipping may occur and the guarantee can be invalidated.

That slat rule is not a tiny footnote. A firm tufted mattress depends on an even base, and an old frame with wide gaps could undermine the whole feel. I would check the bed frame before ordering, because sorting that out after delivery is a nuisance.

My decision after trying it

The Bespoke Quartz is a strong candidate for someone who wants a proper firm Hypnos without spending Vispring money. I would also try the Hypnos Wool Origins before paying full retail, as that range often gives a softer first contact while keeping the traditional feel.

I would not choose the Quartz for my own bed. The wool layers feel deep, the springs feel well controlled, and the price can be very attractive. My issue is the lack of flex: it makes the mattress feel supportive, then keeps refusing to contour. Some buyers will call that reassuring. I found it a bit too rigid.

Suitability

*Assuming average weight, suitability will vary dependant on body type, use the quiz above for a more tailored guide.
  • Back Sleepers
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • The amount of support offered from a mattress will vary depending on the firmness of the tension and the type of support layer used. Based on a person of average build.
  • Side Sleepers
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • If you sleep on your side you typically need a supportive tension that is not too firm, nor too soft. This is because your hips and shoulders need adequate sinkage.
  • Stomach Sleepers
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Stomach sleepers need a reasonable amount of tension in the base support layer to adequately offer body contouring and help prevent aches and pains. Results will vary based on your build.

Performance

  • Breathability
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Mattresses that feature breathable materials help promote airflow and keep you cool making for a more hygienic night's sleep.
  • Turning on mattress
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Certain materials like memory foam can make it difficult to move about on the mattress while you toss and turn. Same too for pillow tops which can create a cloud like sensation which can make manoeuvrability challenging.
  • Stability

    ★★★★★
  • Depending on the type of support layer in place can have an impact on stability, edge to edge support and roll together prevention. Pocket springs of a firmer tension will have better stability than open coil soft tension, for example.
