Why our sleep experts loved it
I tested the Hypnos Inspired by Nature 02 in a Bensons showroom, mainly in the medium tension. The first lie-down was steady rather than dramatic. With three fleeces of wool and plenty of natural-fibre messaging, I expected a sharper cool feel at the surface. Instead, the mattress stayed temperature-neutral during the time I spent on it, with no sweaty foam build-up and no theatrical chill.
This is a costly mattress, and the price remains the main objection. Hypnos is one of the few premium brands I still tend to trust for durability, because its better models have stayed fairly consistent over the years: heavy upholstery, proper springing, hand finishing, no obvious showroom trickery. That does not make the bill easier to swallow.
Materials, build and what I noticed in store
The spec is unusually full. The mattress contains three fleeces of RWS certified British wool from the Woolkeepers Community of farmers, described as traceable, sustainable and ethically produced. Beneath that sits a cotton rich blend layer for moisture absorption, plus a 100% natural fruit fibre layer using leaf and stem fibres from bananas, pineapples and oranges, blended with responsibly sourced durable cotton.
Those materials gave the surface a deep, settled feel. It did not have the quick squash of a foam-led hybrid. Compared with the Simba Hybrid Pro, the Hypnos feels less instantly cushioned and more traditionally sprung, with support arriving from below rather than from a soft top layer. For buyers used to boxed mattresses, this may feel rather serious at first.
The core uses ReActivePro 7-turn pocket spring technology, intended to respond to body shape and help spinal alignment. Around the outside, Hypnos adds Triple Edge Protection: 3 rows of firmer edge springs on both sides, a metal frame and traditional side stitching. I sat on the edge and pressed along the border; it held its shape better than most softer hybrids I see at this level.
The finishing is very much old-school Hypnos. There are 3 rows of true hand side-stitching, hand tufting with British wool, and a Hypnos signature damask cover made from breathable viscose derived from wood pulp. The fire retardancy treatment is stated as 100% natural and chemical-free. The mattress is also made in the UK, in Buckinghamshire, by Royal Warrant holders Hypnos, exclusively for Bensons for Beds.
Practicalities deserve attention. At 29cm high, it may need deeper fitted sheets. The mattress is turnable, so both sides can be used and the fillings should be refreshed by rotating and turning in line with the guidance. There are 8 traditional flag-stitched handles, reduced to 4 on the 90cm size. Helpful, though I would still want two people for moving it.
Comfort and temperature feel
The medium tension felt best on my side. My shoulder had enough room to settle without the hip sinking too far, and the support through the middle of the body felt organised. Lying on my back, I was comfortable, although the firmer option would be the one I would compare before committing.
The cooling claim needs careful reading. Wool and cotton regulate differently from gel foam or cool-touch covers. During my showroom test the bed felt dry, breathable and even, rather than cold. That is no bad thing; the absence of clamminess matters more over a full night than a cold first touch in a shop. Still, anyone expecting an obvious cooling sensation may be underwhelmed.
The hand tufting gives the surface a firmer, more anchored character. Some lighter side sleepers may notice the tufts through a thin protector. This is part of the traditional construction, and it helps hold the fillings in place, yet it does reduce that smooth pillow-top feel many hotels train people to expect.
Who I think it suits
Average-weight side sleepers look like the best match for the medium version. The shoulder cushioning is the strongest part of the feel, and the spring unit keeps the mattress from becoming vague. Average-weight back sleepers should also manage, though the firm tension may give cleaner lower-back support.
Front sleepers and heavier back sleepers should be more selective. The upholstery has depth, and deep upholstery can allow too much give for people needing a very flat surface. A firmer Hypnos, or the firm version of this model, would be the safer comparison.
Customer-review evidence
No usable owner-review extracts were provided with the information I received, so I cannot quote long-term buyer patterns on sagging, heat or comfort. That is a gap, especially for a mattress sold with durability in mind. My assessment is based on in-person showroom testing: lying in different positions, checking the borders, handling the cover and comparing the feel with other premium mattresses I have reviewed.
Limitations of this assessment
I could not check how the wool and fruit fibre layers behave after months of nightly use.
I could not test whether repeated turning keeps both sides evenly comfortable.
I could not measure partner disturbance properly while testing alone in store.
I could not assess Bensons delivery, recyclable packaging removal or aftercare.
Verdict from the showroom
The Hypnos Inspired by Nature 02 makes sense for buyers who value natural fillings, strong edge support and a mattress with a real chance of reaching its free 10-year guarantee in good shape. The Eden Project endorsement, GRS certified factory reference and recyclable packaging made from sugar cane and recycled plastic strengthen the responsible-materials case.
I would shortlist the medium for side sleepers first. Back sleepers should compare it directly with the firm version. The main reason to pay this much is not an instant cooling sensation or a plush showroom wow moment; it is the 7-turn spring unit, 29cm turnable build, British wool, proper side-stitching and the sense that Hypnos has not cut the obvious corners.
