Why our sleep experts loved it
The Hypnos Inspired by Nature 04 felt different from the usual Hypnos formula as soon as I tried it in store. Most Hypnos mattresses I see lean hard on wool comfort layers over a traditional spring unit. This one adds a 50mm graphite infused 100% natural latex layer, and that gives it a quicker, more elastic feel under pressure.
The price sits in premium territory, so I would not buy into it just because the sustainability story sounds polished. There is a lot packed into the mattress, though: three fleeces of RWS certified British wool from the Woolkeepers Community of farmers, natural latex from responsibly managed forests, a fruit fibre layer, and ReActivePro 9-turn pocket springs. For once, the spec sheet is not just decorative.
Materials, finish and edge support
The showroom sample had the dense, tailored look I expect from Hypnos. The signature damask cover is made from breathable viscose derived from wood pulp, with 100% natural chemical-free fire retardancy protection. It felt smooth and tight, although the hand-tufted British wool surface will not please everyone. Some sleepers prefer a flatter, quilted top.
At 30cm deep, this is a tall mattress. On a high divan or ottoman base it could make the bed feel quite lofty, and shallow fitted sheets may be a nuisance. It is also turnable, so you need to rotate and flip it as directed. The 8 traditional flag-stitched handles help, with 4 handles on the 90cm size, but this is still a two-person job in larger sizes. Worth remembering before buying.
The border support impressed me more than the marketing did. Hypnos uses Triple Edge Protection here: 3 rows of firmer edge springs on both sides, a metal frame, plus 3 rows of true hand side-stitching. Sitting near the edge, I did not feel much slumping. Compared with the Simba Hybrid Luxe, this feels less cushioned at first contact, but stronger and more traditional around the perimeter.
The eco material story is detailed. The wool is RWS certified and fully traceable, the fruit fibre layer uses leaf and stem fibres from bananas, pineapples and oranges blended with moisture absorbing cotton, and the packaging uses sugar cane and recycled plastic. It is also made in the UK, in Buckinghamshire, by Royal Warrant holders Hypnos, exclusively for Bensons for Beds. The Eden Project endorsement will reassure some buyers. My reservation is simple: none of that proves comfort. You still have to like the feel.
Comfort from my in-store test
I spent longest on the medium version. The feel is buoyant rather than sink-in soft. Latex springs back quickly, so changing position was easy and there was no memory foam drag. The surface has a firmer, tufted character at first, then the latex starts to take some pressure away from the shoulder and hip.
Side lying suited it best during my test. My shoulder settled in enough for a medium tension mattress, and the 9-turn pocket spring base kept my waist from dipping. Back lying was comfortable too, although I would want a second comparison with the firm version before spending this much. A back sleeper wanting a very level, braced feel may find the medium a shade too forgiving through the hips.
For heat, the ingredients are sensible rather than magical. Wool helps manage humidity, latex is breathable, and the viscose cover felt airy in the showroom. A few minutes in normal clothes cannot replicate a humid August night under a duvet, so I would be cautious about treating this as a cure for overheating.
Who I think it suits
Average-weight side sleepers are the clearest match for the medium. It gives more pressure relief than many wool-only Hypnos models I have tried, helped by that 50mm latex layer. Combination sleepers should also appreciate the quick response, especially those who dislike being held in one hollow by memory foam.
Back sleepers need to be more selective. Some will enjoy the medium because it contours without feeling loose, while others will be better served by the firm option. Front sleepers are the group I would warn most strongly. The medium may allow the pelvis to sit too low, particularly on a heavier body.
Customer feedback available
No verified customer reviews were supplied with the product information I received, so I cannot honestly say whether owners agree with my showroom impressions. That absence matters at this price. I would want to see long-term notes on settlement, latex feel after use, and whether the hand-tufting becomes more or less noticeable after several months.
Limits of this assessment
I tested the mattress in store, not through a home trial.
I could not check filling settlement after months of turning.
I could not measure partner disturbance across a full night.
I did not assess Bensons' delivery service or claims under the free 10-year guarantee.
Verdict from the showroom
The Inspired by Nature 04 earns more of its premium positioning than I expected. The latex is the reason. It gives this mattress a livelier, more pressure-relieving feel than the more familiar wool-led Hypnos models, while the edge support and hand side-stitching keep the whole thing reassuringly solid.
I would still try both comfort choices before ordering. The medium is the one I would point most average-weight side sleepers towards; the firm deserves attention from committed back sleepers. Expensive, yes, and the sustainability pitch gets rather loud, but the 10-year guarantee and layered build make the price easier to understand than on many showroom mattresses.
