Why our sleep experts loved it
I got my hands on the Dunlopillo Royal Sovereign in-store and it was one I was looking forward to, mainly because Dunlopillo latex tends to have that springy, supportive feel without needing a big stack of layers. The Dunlopillo Royal Sovereign mattress is a medium-tension mattress with a knitted cover. The mattress has a high quality latex core which provides exceptional support and comfort, as well as pressure relief. It also has a hypoallergenic quilted cover to help keep you allergy free. This mattress has an overall depth of 21cm and is suitable for all types of bed base, including divan beds.
Dunlopillo use only premium quality latex in their mattresses and pillows to give a luxurious feel and the support needed for a great night's sleep. Pressing my palm into the middle, it bounced back quickly and felt properly resilient, not that slow, sinking memory foam feel. On my back it kept me nicely level, but as soon as I rolled onto my side I could tell lighter side sleepers might find the medium tension a touch firm around the shoulder because latex pushes back rather than letting you drop in.
The Royal Sovereign uses a soft quilted cover specially designed to provide pressure relief and comfort. Running my hand across it, it felt smooth and soft, but it is not a thick, pillow-top style finish, so don't expect loads of initial squish before you hit the latex. Also worth saying, at 21cm it is on the slimmer side, which is fine on a supportive base but it can look a bit lean on deeper bed frames and it won't give you that big, lofty 'hotel mattress' vibe.
The mattress includes pressure relief technology, a medium tension and 21cm depth. The Dunlopillo Royal Sovereign is designed to be hypoallergenic and is approved by the National Bed Federation. Guaranteed for 8 years.
For me personally, this sits in the good bracket if you like a cleaner, bouncier feel and you want something that stays supportive without loads of fuss. If you're after loads of sink-in softness, or you share a bed and are sensitive to movement, latex can feel a bit lively compared to a calmer pocket spring and foam combo, and at this sort of price I'd also like to see a bit more depth or a more substantial comfort layer.
