Why our sleep experts loved it
Contract mattresses aren't just for landlords and hotels, they can be bought by the everyman too and with some additional benefits over traditional mattresses. I've been looking forward to reviewing this one because Sleepeezee tend to do a decent job of making 'hotel spec' feel like something you'd actually want at home, not just something that survives a busy guest room. Starting with the obvious, this is a pocket spring mattress and divan base sold as a bundle at a steep discount over buying separately. The divan is a fairly standard affair, offering cheap storage at a bargain price point that will more than suit for those looking for something reasonable that won't stand out while still being of good-quality. Just be aware, it is very much a functional base, if you're expecting fancy upholstery or loads of custom options, this isn't that.
Starting with the support layer. This layer is what sits at the bottom of the mattress and in this instance houses an impressive 1000 pocket springs of firm tension that will suit back and stomach sleepers comfortably. When I pressed down across the surface I could feel the springs reacting in smaller sections rather than one big 'bounce', which is exactly what you want from pocket springs. Lying on my back, my hips felt nicely held up and I didn't get that hammock feeling you can sometimes get on cheaper sets. The flip side is the firmness, if you're a lighter side sleeper (say under about 70kg) you'll probably notice pressure building around the shoulder and hip, it doesn't give you loads of sink. Pocket springs are a surprisingly high quality inclusion given the price point and still my favourite base layer, but don't expect the same level of motion isolation you'd get from a thicker comfort build, you can still feel a bit of movement if someone fidgets next to you.
Onto the top layer and you get luxurious layers of natural cotton and wool which are both cooling and comfortable giving great breathability and durability. Running my hand across the top it had that slightly textured, 'proper mattress' feel rather than a slick foam topper, and it didn't feel clammy at all. Another key benefit of this top layer is that the mattress has two of them being double sided. This gives further durability allowing the product to last longer while remaining comfortable long-term, but it does mean you'll need to actually rotate and flip it to get the benefit, and it's not the lightest thing to wrestle around on your own.
The final feature comes in the Source 5 designation that you benefit from with contract products. Source 5 gives additional fire resilience thanks to its BS7177:2008 medium hazard passmark score.
For me personally, this sits in the good bracket if you want a firmer, no-nonsense pocket spring feel with a breathable natural fibre top, especially as a bundle with the divan. If you're after a plusher, more forgiving surface, or you want a divan that feels a bit more premium for the money, I'd keep looking.
