Why our sleep experts loved it
Introducing the Hotel Supreme 1400 Pocket Contract Divan Bed Set appears to be a high-quality and versatile product bundled from one of the top manufacturers, Sleepeezee. I got my hands on this one in person and the first thing I noticed was how smart and tidy it looks as a set, it has that hotel vibe without trying too hard. The availability of different sizes and the chrome glide feet are added benefits that make it suitable for a variety of settings, being particularly good for hardwood floors, although carpeted areas will still benefit from the chrome feet. That said, those chrome glides can feel a bit 'slippy' on very smooth floors, so I'd be tempted to add cups or grippers if you're putting it on polished boards.
From the perspective of the mattress, the support layer uses 1400 individual pocket springs, along with layers of natural cotton and wool in the comfort layer which should provide a comfortable and supportive sleep surface for guests. When I pressed down with my palm you can feel the pocket springs pushing back in a more controlled way than an open coil, it doesn't just squash flat. Running my hand across the hand-tufted cover, it felt properly traditional and the tufts do a good job of keeping the fillings in place, but you can feel them a bit if you like a super smooth, pillow-top sort of finish. On my back it felt nicely even through the hips and lower back, but on my side I could see lighter side sleepers finding it a touch firm around the shoulder because the cotton and wool don't give in the same way a thicker foam layer would. The hand-tufted cover adds an extra layer of luxury and support which keeps everything tied together and results in settlement, while the platform top divan base provides additional support for the mattress, albeit at the expense of some breathability. If you run warm, that platform top base and the denser natural fillings can hold onto heat a bit more than a slatted base setup, so it's worth bearing in mind for stuffy rooms.
The divan base being platform top divan base will provide additional support and the medium-firm support level should accommodate a wide range of sleepers regardless of whether they sleep on their back or their side. Sitting on the edge to mimic getting dressed, the edge support felt decent for a pocket sprung mattress, but it's not the sort of rigid edge you'd get from a dedicated foam encasement. The bed set also has a 7 year guarantee, which is a good indication of the manufacturer's confidence in the product's durability, highlighting the prolonged lifespan expected. I will say though, at this sort of premium level I'd like to see proper stitched handles on the mattress for rotating, because it's not a light set and you'll feel it when you come to move it.
It is also good that the product is compliant with BS7177:2008 Source 5 - Medium Hazard, which means that it is fire-resistant and safe for use in commercial settings which make it ideal for hotels and landlords and is a legal requirement for those in the industry.
