Why our sleep experts loved it
The Luna 1000 Pocket Memory Pillow Top Mattress is a new mattress from a brand that is growing in popularity this year, known as SleepSoul. SleepSoul itself is still quite new but its parent company, Birlea, has been in the industry for a long time having dedicated much of their resource over the last decade toward the home and bedroom segment. Since its inception, the SleepSoul brand has managed to acquire numerous Which Best Buy awards, featuring prominently in many top-ten lists and part of many retailers stock portfolio.
I got my hands on the Luna in person and the first thing I did was press down on the top panel and run my hand across the cover. The pillow-top has that proper cushy, sink-in feel straight away, and it feels more 'hotel mattress' than basic bed-in-a-box.
The SleepSoul Luna 1000 Pocket Memory Pillow Top Mattress has it all, a strong pocket spring base combined with a memory foam comfort layer and finished off with a luxurious pillow-top that will have you feeling relaxed and refreshed regardless of how you sleep.
That said, if you sleep hot, the memory foam and pillow-top combo can hold onto warmth more than a simpler sprung mattress, so it is not the coolest option in the world.
The Comfort Layer
This layer sits at the top of the mattress and is made up from 4 different layers of foam which will mould to your body and offer luxurious quality while being superbly soft. Thanks to the deep layers, this mattress is great for side sleepers whose hips and shoulders need extra depth and "give" in the layers to prevent discomfort regardless of the medium firm tension provided by the pocket springs.
When I lay on my side, I could feel my shoulder dropping in nicely without that dead, stuck feeling you sometimes get with thicker memory foam. On my back it felt more 'medium' than 'firm' to me, with my hips held up well but still a bit of cushioning under the lower back. If you're under about 70kg and mostly a side sleeper, I think you'll get on with the pressure relief, but if you're heavier or you like a really firm, flat feel, the pillow-top can feel a touch too plush and you might notice your hips settling in more than you'd like.
One other thing, because the top is so inviting, it can make it slightly harder to change position compared to a firmer, bouncier surface, especially if you like to roll around a lot in the night.
The Base Layer
This layer sits at the bottom of the mattress and is where the product gets much of its support. The Luna comes with an impressive 1000 pocket springs of good quality which are the preferred structure for what makes up a strong support layer. Faring better than reflex foam and open coil springs, this layer will contour to your body, giving great support that will aid your back and neck, thanks to the medium firm tension.
When I sat on the edge to see how it copes, it dipped more than I'd want for regular edge sitters, so if you perch on the side to put socks on every morning, you might find it a bit soft there. Motion isolation is decent though, the pocket springs do their job, but you can still get a bit of bounce coming through because of the spring unit underneath.
Finally, the pillow-top is included which finishes the product off, offering additional comfort and further depth to the mattress, this layer helps with the feeling that you are sleeping on a cloud giving ultimate softness and support in a fair and reasonable price point.
For me personally, this one sits in the 'comfy crowd-pleaser' bracket, it is the sort of mattress you lie on and instantly relax. Just go in knowing it is more about plush comfort than razor-sharp edge support, and the warm-ish memory foam feel will not suit everyone.
