Only SleepSoul has enough owner reviews to score, so there is no head-to-head verdict here.

Head to head

Ergoflex is all foam, with no springs anywhere in the range, while SleepSoul is sprung throughout, with pocket springs or a hybrid build in every model. If you know you want springs under you, that decides it: SleepSoul. SleepSoul runs from soft-medium to firm, and every Ergoflex mattress is medium-firm. SleepSoul covers more of the firmness scale, which helps if two sleepers need different feels. SleepSoul is clearly the cheaper way in; Ergoflex's range starts well above it. Ergoflex doesn't have enough owner reviews with us yet to score fairly.

SleepSoul

SleepSoul is one of the newest manufacturers to make a splash in the last few years, entering the arena at the start of the first lockdown and rapidly expanding through its use of existing supply chains provided by its parent company, Birlea. Since inception SleepSoul has rapidly gained a strong market position in the bed in the box space, competing directly with other popular manufacturers like Eve, Simba and Nectar.

SleepSoul are not sold directly and are instead sold through a host of retailers up and down the country in both online and offline capacity where the price of these mid-tier priced products tend to get carved up down to the lowest pound as everyone reaches to capture the sale.

Ergoflex

Ergoflex entered the UK in 2006 and is one of the original bed-in-a-box brands, predating Emma, Simba and Nectar by nearly a decade. The brand has stayed true to a single-product philosophy throughout, with the Ergoflex 5G being the current and only mattress in the range. It is a deep, five-layer all-foam mattress measuring about 23 cm, built entirely from Ergoflex's own in-house manufactured foams and wrapped in a removable TENCEL cover.

The single-product approach is deliberate. Rather than splitting engineering effort across a dozen models, Ergoflex invests all of its development into refining the 5G. The result is a mattress that has been steadily improved over multiple generations without the complexity of a large catalogue.

SleepSoul owner satisfaction

Owners are mostly happy with the SleepSoul range, and the praise is much the same across it: comfort, value and a box that is easy to unpack. One Bliss 800 owner called it “Good quality and excellent for the price”. Another found it “very easy to manage, open and soon plumped up”.

Firmness is the recurring complaint, and it runs both ways on the same model: one Bliss 800 owner wrote that it was “not medium as advertised. It's soft.” Another found the same mattress “Far more firm than the description suggests”. A few owners find them warm at night. The other complaint that keeps coming up is edge support, mostly on the Comfort 800 and Heaven 1000, and a few owners across the range say they can feel the springs. One Comfort 800 owner wrote that “the unsupported edges are annoying”.

SleepSoul supportiveness

Supportiveness is at the forefront of SleepSoul design, with pocket spring support structure taking centre position in the lineup and offering a great variety of tensions ranging from medium to firm in their more popular offerings. The open coil variants perform less well however, do feature at a price point making them a great option for those on a budget,

The support layer in much of the range is able to be compacted and rolled, giving you a tighter package come delivery that saves on logistical and delivery costs that can be passed on to you.

SleepSoul durability

Owner reviews of the range go back years, and those that mention wear are split. One owner bought a second SleepSoul about five years after the first and said the original was “STILL as good and cosy as new”. A small number report a dip or sag forming within the first few months.

To offset this concern, SleepSoul has developed a 10 year warranty to accompany the purchase of mattresses in the range. This warranty should go a considerable way to alleviating the worry over sagging and will help establish SleepSoul as a leader in the industry.

Ergoflex owner satisfaction

Ergoflex carries OEKO-TEX certification on its materials and a 10-year guarantee as standard. The 30-night trial is shorter than most current rivals, with Emma and Simba at 200 nights and Nectar at 365, but it is enough time to form a proper opinion on the feel.

The single-product model removes the decision fatigue that affects buyers shopping brands with large catalogues. There is one mattress, one feel, one price. That simplicity is a genuine selling point for buyers who find the mattress market overwhelming.

Ergoflex supportiveness

The 5G uses a 9 cm high-density visco-elastic comfort layer for pressure relief, a 5 cm cool-sleep airflow system for temperature management, and a 9 cm resilient base for structural support. The overall feel is medium firm and the foam contours to the body progressively rather than sinking in immediately. Back sleepers and side sleepers of average weight are well served.

The deep all-foam build means the 5G does not have the bounce or responsiveness of a hybrid pocket spring mattress. Stomach sleepers and restless sleepers who change position frequently during the night may find the slower foam response restrictive compared with a spring-based alternative.

Ergoflex durability

In-house foam manufacturing is the single biggest advantage Ergoflex has on durability. Because the brand makes its own foams rather than buying from third-party suppliers, the density and quality of the raw material is controlled from production through to finished mattress.

The 10-year guarantee backs the build quality, and the removable TENCEL cover helps with long-term hygiene by allowing the outer layer to be washed independently of the foam core. For an all-foam mattress at this price tier, the durability profile is strong.

Owner reviews of SleepSoul mattresses

This is a really comfortable, good quality mattress. When it arrived (in an amazingly small box), the mattress was well wrapped up in plastic and there was a little tool to slice the plastic open without slicing the mattress, plus instructions for the mattress. It was simple and straightforward and the mattress was ready to sleep on in just an hour or so. There was no obvious chemical smell, just a slight whiff if I put my nose right on it as soon as it came out of the wrapping. I haven't been bothered by any smell when sleeping on it. I bought it as an urgent need because the old one was giving me back pain. After two nights on this mattress, the pain was gone and i've had a couple of weeks of very comfortable nights with much better sleep so far. The only thing i'm not so pleased with is the edges squish down when you sit on them. I guess they have to in order to fit inside the small box but I prefer the edge of a mattress to keep its shape when I sit on it. It's not a major problem as I sleep alone but if I shared it and had to sleep near the edge, i'd feel as if I was going to roll out of bed. I'd want a king size if I was to share it. I will also get a mattress topper just to increase the comfort factor even more (and to fulfil the conditions of the guarantee). Overall, I am very happy with this mattress, it's great to feel comfortable and well supported. With the discount, it's amazing quality for the price. So glad I bought it; my back thanks me every morning.

Good Points: It's the first new mattress I have had in years and its quite a difference but theres lots I like about the change: - The mattress is very supportive of my body, I'm 5'11 and weigh nearly 100kg's, support matters! - It feels stable and doesn't make me roll to any low spots - The mattress is far lighter than I anticipated so rotation by myself is really easy, especially with the handles - It keeps me warmer which during the late heat was a bit of an issue but I think I'll appreciate it during the winter - It arrived rolled and it was easy to remove and set up in no time Improvement Points: There are a couple of things but these are very minor, and they are just my views: - The handles, despite the low overall mattress weight dont feel very sturdy and I worry I'll rip them clean off - The measurements indicate the mattress depth, and was made very clear on the website, but depite my measurements it was still a shock to see such a deep mattress having been used to very thin one for years - I think I remember seeing it mentioned as being on the firmer side of things but compared to my previous mattress this is much softer (not necessarily a bad thing, just didnt expect it is all) Thats it really. As you can see the negatives for me are very minor and I would overall highly recommend the product.

The product itself is as expected, it was delivered vacuum packed in a box as tall as the mattress is wide and rolled up, so it doesn't take up too much space and is just small enough for the average male to handle. It is of cause a bit on the heavy side so probably be a good idea to get help if moving up stairs but is easy enough to slide up the stairs on its side. The box contains the mattress along with a handy safety knife to open the vacuum sealed bag and some documents. After removing the mattress from the box take care with the unrolling as it is a bit weighty and king of suddenly springs/flops the last 2 or 3 foot so have no breakables near the end if unrolling on the bead frame. When cutting the plastic try not to cut a large hole, doing this will allow the air to gradually enter the mattress and the mattress will safely spring back to it intended shape, then you can remove the plastic with the provided safety knife. The mattress boasts a 1000 pocket springs topped with memory foam so no need for a mattress topper as there's plenty of padding on top of the springs. I found the medium firmness of the mattress to be just right for me and after having the mattress for a month now I can confirm that I sleep better. The price was very competitive the quality it right for the price but the delivery let down experience a bit, the guy was unbelievably miserable didn't say a word to me, didn't smile (giving off couldn't care any less vibes) attitude was disgusting.

Improvement Points: I ordered the 120cm wide 'small double' mattress. Once unwrapped, it was clearly far too wide and would not fit on my bed frame, being around 125 cm wide. I know that foam mattresses take a while to regain their proper shape, however this has not been as quick as anticipated. As a the spare bed mattress, it has slowly change shape, and after about 4 weeks of resting and not being slept on, it is now about 122cm wide. It just about fits onto the frame.

Good Points: In the first year or so resonably comfortable but then it goes wrong... Improvement Points: After about 2 years the mattress has developed 2 distinct dips, about 3cm deep (after ~4 hours after getting about of bed. They are worse first thing) so at night you keep rolling back into them. I'm told : 'Over a period of time the body will create a natural impression on the mattress. This is known as settlement and is perfectly normal.' I dont beleive a dip that is deep enough to affect your sleeping position is normal and i didn't have this in a previous memory foam mattress. We only changed as we went up in bed size. So after 2 years use of a mattress that has a 10 year warranty I am having to buy a new one as this is unbearable to sleep on. Spend a bit more and get something better with reviews after a few years, not a few days.
