Becky's Thoughts On The SleepSoul Heaven 1000 Pocket Gel Mattress

Finding the right mattress can be hugely difficult, after all I've reviewed over 600 to date and I'm still learning when it comes to suitability surrounding individuality and personal comforts. These barriers all make buying online a challenge, but in this instance I think we've got something a bit special.

I'm going to split this review into 3 chunks, support, comfort and cover.

Looking at the support, you're getting 1000 pocket springs. For those unaware, pocket springs are the best support layer you will find in a mattress, it is my preference that wins out against traditional spring and reflex foam. This is due to pocket springs ability to offer full body contouring with suitable support for both the neck and back.

Onto the comfort layer and we have a generous depth of luxurious and soft gel. The thing that makes the gel option so great for people is that it is massively breathable, allowing strong airflow and allowing you to keep cool while still giving you a deep and comfortable layer to sink into.

Finally you have the cover, bringing the mattress together and including a pillow top as part of it. The cover is soft and durable with turning handles to help facilitate rotation. Remember, this is a single sided mattress and while that does mean you don't need to flip it, you should still rotate as it helps with settlement issues that would otherwise potentially cause dipping.

Reasons to Buy

This mattress is rated a medium tension that will suit the vast majority of people. Not too firm nor too soft, this could be a great option for those with a partner who has a different sleep position, height or weight as it is generally agreeable and in line with most tolerances.

As an additional positive benefit, you get 10 years warranty included. Thats 3 years longer than the typical lifecycle of other mattresses and highlights the quality materials that the manufacturer have included in this product.

Reasons to Avoid

One of the main downsides of this mattress surrounds it's origins, being produced outside of the UK has the pro benefit of keeping the costs down, it also has a stigma associated with it, especially considering the majority of it's competition tend to be handmade within the UK. Outside of this downside, the SleepSoul range fro Birlea can be a fantastic option to get the sleep you deserve at a cheaper than standard price.

What Makes The SleepSoul Heaven 1000 Pocket Gel Mattress Great?

Pillow Top

Many mattresses that you see that look really plush, do so because they feature a pillow top. Benefits of a pillow top mattress are increased comfort and luxury styling. Downsides are they can be a bit of a pain to get sheets over properly

Knitted Cover

It is common in the industry to have a knitted cover, these covers can come in a variety of patterns but are typically hard wearing and do not present problems for consumers.

Medium

A Medium firmness mattress is the most common build offered due to the range of suitability offered in such a mattress. This type of mattress will be better suited toward averagely weighted people, while lighter people should opt for a medium-light, and heavier people considering a medium-firm.

Depth: 25cm

Most experts recommend a minimum 10 inches, 4 inches on the top layer and 6 inches for the core so this size is an ideal balance of size and performance. Generally, the heavier the load the deeper the mattress should be.

10 Year Warranty

A mattress warranty covers physical defects in a mattress, such as sagging over a certain threshold when not in use. Most mattress warranties last between 5-20 years, but as it is recommended to replace your mattress every 7-10 years this warranty will cover the life of your mattress.

25cm deep

A 25cm mattress is a good depth for a product of quality. Plenty of room for some good quality springs and enough space for a good top layer of comfort. This side of product should just about fit a standard sheet but do not be surprised if you find you do need to upgrade to a deeper fill sheet to fit over the mattress.

Single-sided

Single sided means only one side is comfy. Positives are you only need to rotate the mattress occassionaly rather than the more cumbersome rotate and flip. Downside is the lifespan of the product may suffer as a result, only marginal, but worth mentioning.

Single-sided - no need to turn it over

A single sided mattress is typical for the industry and relates to how  a mattress has the comfort layer on one side of the mattress. only This means that the mattress only needs to be rotated rather than flipped. The benefit of single sided mattresses is that they require less upkeep in that there's no flipping, but also, there's less components involved in the creation which saves costs.

Gel foam

Gel foam is used as a top layer and offers much of the same sort of comfort as memory foam but without the heat build up normally associated with it. All the pros and non of the cons. It's a great choice for those looking for something a bit better than traditional memory foam.

Pocket springs

Pocket springs are like natures own springy piece of comfort, except they are not from nature. Alas, pocket springs are a very good part of a mattress and often found in the more premium models. Lower quality products will frequently use open coil spring setups, where pocket springs house each spring in a tiny pocket for additional stability and continued support. Pocket spring typically lasts longer than open coil due to this.

Rolled-up

Rolled up mattresses are ideal for anyone looking at trying to get a mattress up a tight staircase or in a car to bring home from the shops. Do not missunderstand just how troublesome getting a mattress up stairs can be. Heavy and cumbersome, sometimes a rolled up mattress that expands to the side of a full mattress anyway, may be the better option

Fire Resistant

Fire resistant does not mean the product will never catch fire, rather, it will not go up in flames quite so quickly. Resistant to fire in the same way that I am resistant to kisses, sooner or later you end up giving in.

Includes turning handles

Oh turning handles are pointless I hear you say. Just try flipping and turning this product without handles. It can be a pain. Remember that mattresses should be both rotated and flipped frequently, not a problem if you are opting for a sinle, but those doubles and kings can get heavy. Handles are very good.

A wonderfully cool and fresh gel pillow-top mattress

Stay cool Gel helps keep your body cool while you sleep. Gel is a great alternative to memory foam and even latex, both of which can cause you to get too hot without proper airflow (memory foam is the worst for this). This gel also operates as a part of the comfort layer and provides a high degree of comfort.

2cm layer of gel responds to your temperature and keeps you cooler

The sumptuous pillow top adds a luxury feel

1000 individual pocket springs provide complete body support

Pocket Springs are a great support layer. Available in a variety of firmness's, the quality of a spring system is generally determined by the spring count. With 1000 springs this mattress represents a good quality to cost ratio, providing enough springs to successfully contour to your body and provide you with a great nights sleep.

Each pocket spring reacts to your shape for tailor-made comfort

Pocket springs are of considerable better quality than their poorer traditional open coil counterparts. Put simply, pocket spring contours better and supports better than other base layers. When it comes to pocket spring mattresses, the general rule of thumb is that the more springs the better. There are exceptions, of course, but for the best part this is likely to be a good quality mattress based on it's base layer.

There's no roll-together or transfer of movement

Medium firmness rating for the best of both worlds

A medium tension mattress like this is the goldilocks of mattress tensions. Not too soft, nor too firm, medium is typically suitable for the vast majority of people that are looking for a good nights sleep. If you are of average build without back or neck problems, this should be a suitable product. If you are of lower BMI and a side sleeper, consider a softer mattress, whereas if you are of a higher BMI and suffer neck and back pain, consider a firmer tension.

Wrapped in a soft-knit cover

Breathable border improves airflow for better temperature control

The mattress comes with breathable side vents that allow the mattress to remain cool while you sleep. Another benefit to being breathable is that you naturally sweat during the night and the cool and breathable nature means that your mattress will remain hygienic for many years to come.
