Testing Team Takeaways

To test the Bespoke Sapphire Mattress with Detachable Topper we have people from our testing team take a closer look at the mattress and form their own opinions. Below is their observations.

I tried the Bespoke Sapphire in a Furniture Village showroom, and as an average-weight combi sleeper I liked how the medium tension let me move around without feeling stuck. The detachable wool-and-latex topper gave it a plush first touch, while the 10-turn ReActivePro pocket springs pushed back nicely through my hips and shoulders. That said, I’d be cautious with the soft version, because natural fillings can settle and a showroom-comfy surface may loosen up more than you want over time. It feels refined and well made, but at this price I’d want a serious discount before accepting the turning effort, frame requirements and brand-name premium.

Why our sleep experts loved it

I tested the Bespoke Sapphire Mattress with Detachable Topper in a Furniture Village showroom, and the detachable topper is the one decision here that I properly agree with. Fixed pillow-top mattresses often develop a hollow over years of use, then the whole mattress becomes the problem. With this design, the comfort layer can be removed or replaced if it starts causing grief. Sensible move.

The rest is harder to defend. At over £5,000, this needs to make a very clear case the moment you lie on it. The support is refined and the finish looks expensive, yet I still came away thinking the badge and exclusivity are carrying too much of the price.

Construction and practical details

The build is traditional Hypnos: hand-tufted, with 4 rows of hand side-stitching and a 32 cm depth. The removable topper uses organic British wool and latex. The main mattress adds organic British wool, latex, Himalayan allo nettle and kapok, with recycled fibres and polycotton also part of the mix. It sounds lavish on paper, though in the showroom I did not feel a leap that matched the price tag.

The topper gives the surface a cushioned first contact without trapping you in the usual pillow-top problem. I would still use a mattress protector from the first night. Hypnos states that settlement from fillings and body weight is normal, so buyers should expect some compression as the mattress beds in.

The weights deserve attention. The single is 40 kg, small double 53 kg, double 60 kg, king 70 kg and super king 91 kg. This mattress requires turning, with regular rotation as part of care, so ownership involves a bit of work. For a super king, that may mean two people every time.

Comfort and support in store

The spring unit is the best technical element. In king size, the mattress has 2,000 ReActivePro DUO 10-turn pocket springs, and the response is easy to feel. There is a lively push back under the body, with better shaping around the hips and shoulders than a standard pocket-sprung mattress. It is a pleasant feel, no question.

The medium tension felt the better bet during my test. The soft version will suit some lighter sleepers, but I would be wary of choosing it at this price unless you already know you enjoy a deep, cushioned surface. Natural fillings do settle, and a soft mattress can feel lovely in a showroom while becoming too relaxed later.

The cover is a fire-resistant viscose and Tencel ticking, described as chemical-free in its fire protection. It felt smooth and breathable to the touch. A showroom visit cannot prove the cooling claim, though. Latex and wool can work well overnight, but a warm spell at home is the real test.

Who should consider it

This mattress is most convincing for someone who wants a traditional British-made bed, a plush removable comfort layer and a choice of medium or soft support. Back sleepers are probably the safest audience. Some side sleepers will enjoy the pressure relief, depending on body weight and how much sink they want.

Couples may appreciate the latex and pocket springs for movement control, although partner disturbance is difficult to judge properly from a showroom lie-down. I could feel the surface settle quickly after shifting position, but that is only a partial test.

Base choice is important. On a slatted frame, the gap between slats must be no wider than 7.5 cm, or excess dipping may occur and the guarantee can be affected. That is a serious detail on a mattress this expensive. Check the bed frame before ordering.

The available sizes are single, small double, double, king and super king, with bespoke sizes offered by phone. The range also allows medium, soft, or both feels in king and super king sizes. That flexibility is useful, although it does not fix the value issue.

Buying decision

The detachable topper earns praise, and the 10-turn spring system gives the Sapphire a noticeably polished feel. Even so, the price still looks inflated for a pocket-sprung wool and latex mattress. At this level I would test the Hypnos Wool Origins range first, and I would also put a Vispring on the comparison list before signing anything.

I would only be tempted by a heavy discount. At full price, the Sapphire feels like a clever topper idea attached to a mattress that asks the buyer to pay too much for the name on the label.

Mostly very good, my husband likes it. Not sure it is worth the money we paid for it. Our other mattress (Harrison Spinks), which cost less than half of the Hypnos one, is easily just as good, if not better in my opinion.
