Testing Team Takeaways

To test the Bespoke Ruby Pillowtop Mattress we have people from our testing team take a closer look at the mattress and form their own opinions. Below is their observations.

As an average-weight combi sleeper, I found the medium Bespoke Ruby Pillowtop immediately comfortable in the showroom, with a plush landing that worked nicely on my side and enough spring response to stop me feeling swallowed on my back. The 1,800 ReActivePro pocket springs and 10-turn design felt like the strongest part of the mattress, and the edge support was reassuringly solid when I shifted around. I liked the breathable, well-finished cotton ticking and natural-fill story, but the fixed pillow top and tufted dimples would make me cautious about long-term dipping. I’d consider it in a strong sale if you love a traditional cushioned feel, but at full price I’d want a simpler, flatter build.

Why our sleep experts loved it

I tested the Bespoke Ruby Pillowtop Mattress in store in the medium tension, and my reaction was cautious from the start. Hypnos has real credibility, and Furniture Village is positioning this as a premium exclusive, but the pillow top is a big sticking point for me. I have never been a fan of fixed pillow tops because the showroom softness is often the very thing that settles into a dip later.

The Ruby does make a strong first impression. It is a deep mattress at 34 cm, with 1,800 ReActivePro pocket springs in king size and a 10-turn spring design. That spring count is respectable for this level, and the support unit felt like the best part of the bed during testing. The price, though, needs saying plainly: do not buy this at full ticket. It only starts to make sense in a proper sale.

Construction and showroom finish

The surface has a traditional hand-tufted look, and the border is finished with 4 rows of hand side-stitching. That side stitching is not just decorative. When I sat near the edge, the mattress held its shape well and did not slump away under me. Edge support was one of the few areas where I felt confident straight away.

The top panel is less straightforward. Tufting keeps the fillings under control, but it also leaves small dimples across the sleeping surface. Some people like that old-school feel. I find it slightly fussy, and anyone who wants a smooth hotel-style top may notice the little hollows through thinner bedding. Worth a proper lie-down, not just a quick press with your palm.

Hypnos uses Red Tractor-assured wool and latex in the main mattress, with the pillow top adding dual-density layers, kapok, recycled fibres, polycotton and Himalayan allo nettle. The cover is fire-resistant chemical-free unbleached cotton ticking. That reads well on paper, and in store the fabric felt breathable and well finished. The concern sits with the stacked comfort layer. Built-in cushioning cannot be flipped over, so any regular body impression has nowhere to go except rotation.

Feel of the medium model

The medium tension gave me a cushioned landing, then a firmer response from the pocket springs. Back support felt decent in the showroom. I could feel the spring unit doing useful work beneath the padding, and the mattress did not have the vague, marshmallowy feel that some pillow tops suffer from.

Side lying was immediately comfortable around the shoulder. That is exactly why this style sells. The first few minutes flatter it. My doubt is about year three, not minute three. Hypnos states that indentations caused by settlement of fillings or body weight are normal and are not treated as defects, so buyers need to be relaxed about visible body marks developing over time.

The latex is described as cooling and motion-minimising, but a shop floor cannot prove either claim properly. I did not sleep on it through a hot night, and I did not test it with a partner rolling around for eight hours. Compared with a Tempur Sensation, the Ruby feels more traditional and less foam-heavy, but that only tells us about the first impression.

Who it suits, and who should pause

Back sleepers who enjoy padding over a proper spring base are the most obvious match. Side sleepers may like the pressure relief, although heavier sleepers should be wary of the pillow top compressing in the hip area. I would be much more hesitant with the soft tension, given my concerns about settlement.

This is a no-turn mattress, so ownership sounds easy until you look at the weights. The king is 59 kg and the super king is 71 kg, making regular rotation a two-person job for many homes. Smaller sizes are not light either: single 34 kg, small double 45 kg and double 51 kg. Practical detail, easily overlooked in a showroom.

Base compatibility also matters. On a slatted frame, the gaps must be no wider than 7.5 cm, as wider spacing can encourage dipping and affect the guarantee position. The care guidance also asks for 4 hours of airing before use and at least 4 hours for the springs to settle and the mattress to reach full size. None of that is difficult, but it does make the Ruby feel like a mattress that needs managing, not just buying.

Buying call

I would take the spring unit and edge support seriously. I would not treat the pillow top with the same trust. The Bespoke Ruby is available in single, small double, double, king and super king, with bespoke sizing by phone, and the item code I tested against was RUBYMT46F-001. For a sale buyer who loves a plush top, it has appeal.

At full price, my money would go towards a flatter Hypnos Wool Origins model or a Harrison Spinks pocket sprung mattress with a simpler top construction. The Ruby feels expensive in the showroom; long-term shape retention is the question I would want answered before living with it.

Suitability

*Assuming average weight, suitability will vary dependant on body type, use the quiz above for a more tailored guide.
  • Back Sleepers
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • The amount of support offered from a mattress will vary depending on the firmness of the tension and the type of support layer used. Based on a person of average build.
  • Side Sleepers
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • If you sleep on your side you typically need a supportive tension that is not too firm, nor too soft. This is because your hips and shoulders need adequate sinkage.
  • Stomach Sleepers
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Stomach sleepers need a reasonable amount of tension in the base support layer to adequately offer body contouring and help prevent aches and pains. Results will vary based on your build.

    ★★★★★
  • Mattresses that feature breathable materials help promote airflow and keep you cool making for a more hygienic night's sleep.
  • Turning on mattress
    ★★★★★
