Why our sleep experts loved it
The Sareer Matrah Orthopaedic Mattress in a Box is pitched as one of those no fuss, keenly priced mattresses that promises decent support without making your bank account wince. I’ve only assessed this one from online specifications and customer feedback rather than hands on testing. Archers is up in Scotland, and I did not have the chance to pop in store to try it. So this is a spec led review, with a bit of real world context pulled from what owners are actually saying.
Design and features
This is a traditional open coil mattress with a micro quilted damask cover and hypo allergenic fillings. On paper, it’s simple and familiar. Open coil systems use hourglass shaped springs linked together into one unit, which keeps costs down and gives a springy, slightly bouncy feel. The micro quilting should help it feel smoother and more uniform on top, though quilting can also mask what’s underneath for a while, then you notice the cheaper comfort layers sooner. It’s also one sided, so you rotate rather than flip, which is convenient, but it does put more pressure on the same comfort materials long term.
The mattress arrives vacuum rolled, which is a plus for access and delivery. Still, I’m always a little sceptical of very budget open coil mattresses that are compressed for transport, because the comfort layers are usually the first thing to show fatigue, and here those fillings are described in a way that suggests basic white fibre. That tends to feel airy at first, then flatten out and lose that “new mattress” lift.
Mattress comfort
The Matrah is sold as orthopaedic, which most shoppers read as firm and supportive. Based on the build, I’d expect a medium firm feel rather than properly stiff. That lines up with customer comments too. One owner said it was “not quite as stiff as I would have liked but very comfortable all the same”, and another simply praised the firmness. That split is classic open coil. It can feel pleasantly supportive when you first lie down, but the linked spring unit has plenty of give and movement across the surface.
There’s also a review calling it “too wobbly, a bit like a water bed”, and I can absolutely see how someone gets there. Open coil mattresses can transfer movement and feel lively, especially on slatted frames with a bit of flex. If you like a steadier, quieter feel, this probably won’t be your favourite.
Suitability
This tension will usually suit back and side sleeping fairly equally for average weight sleepers. Back sleepers are the best match in my view, because a medium firm surface can help keep the hips from dropping too far. And if you just need a basic upgrade from an old thin mattress, which one reviewer mentioned, it will likely feel like a big improvement.
Side sleepers can be okay here, but it’s not a guaranteed win. The open coil core does not isolate pressure particularly well, so your shoulder might not sink in as neatly as it would on a decent reflex foam mattress at a similar price. If you’re curvier through the hip and shoulder, or you’re sensitive to pressure points, I’d be cautious. Couples should also think twice if one of you is a restless sleeper, because that shared spring unit can make movement more noticeable.
The verdict
I get why this mattress sells. It’s cheap, it’s straightforward, it turns up in a box, and plenty of owners describe it as comfy and “just what I needed”. But from an industry perspective, the construction is very entry level. The coil unit is basic, the fillings sound like the kind that compress early, and the bounce and wobble reported by customers is a real drawback for anyone chasing true stability.
If you’re a back sleeper on a tight budget and you like a springy feel, it could do the job. Personally, I’d give it a miss and look for a reflex foam option around the same money. You’ll usually get better pressure relief, less motion transfer, and a more consistent feel night after night.
